How to fix Gateway 2000 computer? Hello, I have a gateway 2000 desktop computer. It is about 10 years old. I am trying to get it to work again, but when I plug it in it wont turn on. Of course, since it is old, it probably isn't in it's best condition. I want to get it to work again because It was the computer my mom used when I was really young. It was also the first computer I've seen. It will bring back a lot of memories. If I can't fix it at home, is there a place where I can hand it in so they can fix it? Thanks!

Can I run Linux on a Gateway 2000 computer? I recently acquired a Gateway 2000 computer running Windows 95 (it was free). I want to install a Linux operating system on said computer, but I have a few questions about it. First, will this computer even be able to run Linux? Second, which version of Linux will work best on my computer? What is the best computer for under $2000? I am a college student who does play games on my computer but I also do photography and sell my work in galleries. Software Installation error, install of HP Photosmart printer software on Gateway computer with Windows 2000? When I try to do the install, I get an error about not being able to write/create the registry files on my hard drive. Further investigation points me to not having the access to do so, but I have full administrative rights with this machine (I own it). Any suggestions? I have tried multiple user log ons to complete (someone else gave me that idea) but with no success. Thanks for any help. let me also state that HP can't do anything as they believe it's a windows issue. Microsoft wants 100 for me to email them a question. Just trying to get some free advice.
What model of CD-RW burner will work with my Gateway 2000 G6-300, running Windows 98 First Edition? I've tried a number of models, including a Buslink brand burner whose specs claimed it would work with my computer. But it doesn't. In each case, when I install one of these burners, the computer freezes up then trying to load windows. The burner I'm running now is a Memorex CRW-1622, built in 1999, but it's shot. It has a burn failure rate of 50%, and I can't afford to keep throwing away blank CD's that did not burn properly.

I've checked the website for gateway and it says that its maximum capacity for RAM is in fact 1024MB and has been working on a bit more that 600MB with combination of PC 2100 and PC2700 DDR. Recently I bought a 1 GB RAM stick PC2700 DDR memory,333MHZ and when i tried to install it, the machine wouldn't read it (beeping from the tower, no display onstartup etc.) even when i took every other RAM stick out and put the new one in by itself. I researched as much as I could prior to purchasing the item and was sure that the RAM upgrade would work so my question is this, Is it possible that the motherboard only takes a specific type of chip made by gateway? or do i have to configure my computer somehow in order for it to work?
Gateway 2000 Destination with Windows XP home? I have a Gateway 2000 Desintation monitor that I ran using Window XP. XP displayed at 800X600 on the monitor where only part of the screen was cut off, which was fine. Everything was fine until the computer gave out. I switched to an older computer that my Brother in law gave me, a P4 1.7, also with XP. I did not care because I am using this for MAME games. Once I plugged the computer to it, the resolution became strange. When I boot up, everything looks fine until the sign in screen, all I can see is the words Shut down computer and the icon. I cannot change the resolution because I cannot get to the settings to change it. I also cannot run in Safe mode. For some reason it freezes when I press F8. Also, it has an ATI video card but I have no cd. It has way more option than I need for the purposes of this computer. Other than getting another computer and monitor, have no idea what to do, help. I accidentally set a password and now I forgot it and it won't let me on without the password. How to install Windows 2000 in an old gateway with Windows 95? I am currently using a very old Dell OptiPlex modem with a gateway monitor, It's very slow and has very little RAM. I also have a Gateway Modem that has more space and is not as old. I got internet on the Dell, because it was compatible(the other computer; Gateway modem, would not install IE in it). Now we have decided to install windows 2000 into the Gateway and see if that makes IE compatible. How do i go about doing that? Problem with Gateway Computer? Hi ! I have a gateway computer. Its running Windows 2000 with a Gateway Monitor EV700. Dont know why when I click on pictures those are shown dark but not in other computers when I try them. Do I a need a special driver to solve this or what would be the best move? gateway 2000 not turning on!? ok so i got this old computer a yard sale and for what ever reason every time i disconnect a hard drive from it to clean or test in a different computer, it will not read that hard drive. with out the hard drive the gate way splash screen does not even appear. i have tried this with two different computers and they all work fine. this computer has done this with 2 different hard drives. see below. Installing windows 98 on Gateway 2000? I recently was giving a gateway 2000 to see if i could fix it for an elderly man who lives down the street from me i have windows 98 and a upgrade 98 disc my only problem is that i have no bootdisc. The computer has no operating system on it . My question is this is there somehow to get a boot disc or maybe make one( i have no 98 on any system) or is there any way to get it to load straight from the cd itself. I've tried everything i can but getting nowhere. Any hep or suggestion i would gretly appreciate it. I have an xp disc also but the gateway will only install windows 95-2000

Gateway 3400 desktop with Windows 2000 Professional. Is there a way to connect to wireless? I have several laptops and recently acquired a Gateway E3400 desktop with windows 2000 professional installed on it. I have 2 brand new laptops with windows 7 installed on them. I also have a laptop with windows vista installed. All three of these computers are connected to my wireless internet by a wireless router. I have turbo wireless from cable. I use my laptops for streaming videos and Facebook. I was hoping to use my desktop for personal records and such and going to college online this fall. I have been researching information how to connect the desktop to the router. Will I have to upgrade the windows or can I just install an OS like Linux? I am going to buy a wireless usb antenna to connect the desktop? But will I need anything else. I have the desktop already set up ready to go. The computer works beautifully and it relatively fast for an older computer. I have an older Mac that takes about an hour to load onto another site. The Gateway is a good computer despite it's age. How do I get my microphone to work? I have an old Dell 2000 computer that came with a microphone. And it still works on there. why nowadays new computers no longer come with recovery CD? I remember up to year 2000, recovery CD used to be in the package when buying a new computer. I used it many times and it was big relief. gateway 2000 solo won't start up? i let the computer load but before it can start it shows a message saying " error loading explorer.exe. you must reinstall windows." then it says to push ok. then it brings up another message saying " a required .DLL file, C:/WINDOWS/SYSTEM/SHLWAPI.DLL, was not found." then it doesnt let me do anything from there... hopefully that made sense but if anyone knows what is wrong please help! thanks
my system tools menu does not show a system restore tab. I have Windows 98SE. ? My computer, (2000 Gateway Performance) has stopped recognizing my D and E drives and will not print. Nor can i adjust screen resolution. i thought i might be able to system restore to an earlier point, but no system restore tab shows up on system tools menu. Any suggestions? thanks for any help.

How do I put windows 98 in my computer that crashed? I have a Gateway 2000 computer and a Dell. I'm using the Dell to post this question. The Gateway had windows 95. Then I turned it on and it starts running the scan disk. Then it freezes. I rebooted it and then quit the scan disk. It keeps saying something's wrong with it. I pressed retry and then it went to my desktop. Nothing came up though except a window that says that the problem is that there's some faulty registry in the computer. I clicked the button that says to reinstall the right registry and then it freezes before I can do anything else. I tried having it boot from the disk of windows 98. Then after it shows the Gateway 2000 logo, it starts beeping like mad and showing this really complicated looking language. Then it starts booting up in 95 and shows the same registry problems and the scan disk. How can I fix this?

I installed Windows 2000 on an old computer and I can't get the device drivers to work. Where's DOS on old pcs This is an old Gateway computer that I'm trying to fix for a friend. It doesn't have a floppy drive, only a cd-rom. Usually I format it and install DOS and Samsung before installing the operating system. But, it does not recognize any of the drivers. connecting 2 computers to 1 printer through wired router? i have 2 computers..one is a dell and has a dell printer which is upstairs. the other one is a gateway 2000 and is downstairs and both are connected through a wired router so they both have internet. the upstairs computer is directly connected to the printer and i want the downstairs one to be connected to that printer too. i went to Settings on the Window Start menu, then Printers, and then i double-clicked on Add Printer. but then a box came up saying i needed to type the network path or queue name of the printer. where do i find this path or name? i clicked "browse" and my only choice was My Network Places > Entire Network > My Web Sites on MSN. non of them worked when i clicked on them. please help (:
Old Computer, having problems... help? ok, old computer, gateway 2000, had windows 95, want to fix for nephew to use for playing solitare and word for homework, nothing else. when turning on, get message that IFSHP.SYS is not there, system halted, help, what can I do, if fixable
How can I start up my old computer again? I have an old Gateway 2000 computer that had Windows95 until it crashed. I took the computer apart and was thinking that maybe I could use the parts for something else. I found the restore disk and thought that I should probably put it back together, wipeout the hard drive and reinstall everything again with Windows95. When I had it put together again though, (I don't really remember EVERYTHING) it just would sound like all the parts were on and all other stuff but then nothing would come on the monitor. The monitor barely knows anything and the computer just starts beeping for like 3 seconds then it stops. I don't really hear anything and the computer won't do anything else. How do I get the computer to startup so something actually comes on the monitor so I'll actually be able to put in the restore disk, wipeout everything on the harddrive, and have Windows95 again and then have everything back? And I don't care about the Operating system, I just care that I can get the computer to turn on again!!! How do I do that?!

Also want to install my Sound Blaster Live - Platinum 5.1 on it. I have to use the same monitor, ect., and internet connections. Must first get setup and security on it. Security on present computer is Symantec. Need security on the Gateway. Do we have anyone out there that's qualified to help? Help!

Where can I find the Messy Room theme for windows 98? I installed windows 98 on a virtual machine just as a "toy" and I remember a theme called Messy Room. I have all other themes installed except this one. This theme was on an old gateway 2000 computer. All of my drivers work and I just want to know where I can find the additional themes for windows.
How can I fix the sound on my Gateway computer? I have an old Gateway computer (G6-400). I recently re-intalled Windows 2000 due to a crash. Everything seems ok except for the sound. I have system beeps but when I go to control panels/sound and look at the Audio tab, everything is grayed out. I have Boston Acoustics BA635 speakers attached to the computer, and they have power. According to that control panel, I think my sound card appears to be Creative AudioPCI [ES1371, ES1373] and is "working properly".
Trying to fix up a Gateway computer...? I have a gateway computer that i've been trying to fix up - whenever I try to install Windows XP/2000/Ubuntu, it finds a bunch of errors. I'd really like to get this computer working, it has a 300GB HD, TV inputs, USB ports out the wazoo, and all that other good stuff. Can someone help me with what to do.. or have a suggestion on what to replace? Any help is appreciated. I have formatted the hard drive (the Windows installation did it.) The windows installation is to the point where its copying the installation files to the disk, then it gives me an error that it can't find/can't copy the file. The Linux installation just gives me cryptic errors before it even does anything. Anything else? ask. I just want to get it to a point where it's usable... I really don't care what operating system.
how to fix my computer what is the problem? Actually its my parents computer. Its a gateway with windows office 2000. The computer itself is a few years older than that. anyway it is really slow. Sometimes it won't even boot. One time it crashed. Our computer guy was able to fix but now its doing the same thing again. I have run the virus scan i have AVG and it says there is none but it performs like there is. what do i do. or just by a new computer?
