Remanufactured Gateway Computers Knowledge Base
Isn't it possible to have a CD "player" but NOT a CD "burner"? I have a remanufactured computer (Gateway, with Pentium III), somebody said it's 56K (?) It's running Windows 2000, Svce Pack 4. It has a tray for CDs and a slot for floppy disks (3 1/2"). I have been saving files to the floppy disks (Drive A) when I want to gain space on the hard-drive (Drive C ?). I tried once to "save" to a CD (Drive D) because they hold more stuff than the floppy. The salesman said I wouldn't be able to do it unless I had a "CD burner." I didn't know whether I did or not; but when I tried to save, nothing happened. (That's what the salesman said would happen if I did NOT have the burner.) I got a refund on the CD's. Now, a friend of mine is trying to tell me that if I have the tray there, and can "play" a CD (I used that tray once to reinstall my printer after a glitch), then I MUST be able to "save" to a CD. I still believe I do not have the CD-burner, but cannot convince my friend that they are two separate things. Who is right? Thanks to all! I am right about this one after all! (I did check my device manager and found: "DVD/CD-ROM drivers." This confirms what y'all are saying: "read only" NOT "write.") And, the tray only has "disk" on it -- nothing at all about DVD/CD-RW, or anything like that. So, YAY for me. I would say "I told you so" to my friend, but he's a "type-A" personality and would be SO MAD AT ME! (Never confront a type-A personality with the truth if it is different from what he/she believes.) I wll vote for a BEST ANSWER when I have the capability -- have to wait awhile before being allowed to choose one...
