Do gateway laptops suck ? I am a sick computer nerd and an expert when it comes to computer hardware and OS technology, so its weird i would be asking a question. Im starting a project to turn a cheap laptop into a Ubuntu machine. At first i was looking at used laptops from ebay and decided i want a brand new machine to run linux. Since ubuntu doesn't require many system resources, I decided to shop for a laptop in the $400 - 450 price range. I looked on TigerDirect.com, a website which never gave me a problem when shopping for computers. I found the featured deal of the month, a Gateway NV5378U Refurb with AMAZING specs. For $410 I get a decent AMD athlon dual core processor with a clock of 2ghz, 4gb ram, and a 500gb HDD. It also got amazing reviews. However, there are 2 problems. My family and I had HORRIBLE experience with Gateway computers. In 2005 we got a Gateway 7330gz laptop that had the screen replaced 3 times and the DC jack replaced. Despite it having high end specs, it was a sluggish and crappy experience when used. Even with a clean install of XP pro (no recovery disks) it was the same shit. Also since its refurbished, Gateway only gives a 3 month warranty which im concerned about because of the crappy quality of their machines. how to make my gateway/vista laptop run faster? I bought a cheap little gateway laptop, but since its like 2 months old it came with vista like all new laptops do and i really wish i had xp (as i think everyone will agree with me) and i heard you can't just remove vista and install xp cuz then the laptop acts faulty. The laptop only came with 512 ram so my question is: is there a way i can make this thing run faster until i upgrade the ram? Does going from 64mb to 256mb of ram make a big difference? i got a cheap Gateway Solo laptop with 64mb of preinstalled Ram. i put windows xp on it and found out very fast it wouldn't work out to great. i figured the cheapest way to improve the laptops performance was to get a 256mb ram stick for about $30. my question is, will it make a huge difference or is it not worth it?

Gateway Laptop Question? I'm a high school student going into college in 3 months. Since piratically every college student whose taking computer engineering is required to have a laptop I decided to go to future shop and find one for myself. In there I found a descent computer, a gateway NV5909H. But after coming back from the store with it my family told me that gateway uses cheap parts and my laptop will fall apart in under 2 years. Why do people have a problem with Gateway computers? I'm going to be getting a laptop sometime next week. I went into Best Buy, described what I wanted in a laptop to the sales associate and told him my budget. He pointed me in the direction of the Gateway laptop Model: M-6864 and it sounds like everything I want in a laptop for a very cheap price. It's going for $606.99 right now. I called my mom and told her about it. She knows nothing about computers, but was continuously telling me "You don't want a Gateway!" Our first desktop was a Gateway and it went to hell [mainly because of my own stupidity] but I am MUCH more knowledgeable and have been through many computers since them. I've heard alot of complaints about Gateway's laptops and computers, but what's the big deal about them? Why would people prefer HP or Dell over Gateway? The Gateway laptop I saw was a bang for it's buck and I can't believe anyone would pass up such great specs for a great price.

Gateway laptop sucks? Recently bought Gateway laptop. I found price for that configuration to be the best at that time. Very first day, I noticed noisy fan. Called tech. service. He said, laptop has bad heat sink so suggested me to go to store where I purchased and replace it. Next day, I got it replaced. Same problem, fan is noisy. Called technical service on following weekend. Bye the way, Gateway do not have 1-800 number. After spending two weekends talking to tech support, guy said, noisy fan is good and that keeps ur laptop cool. Come on .. Give be break.. I think these people use cheap parts or second quality parts. I know, when the premium quality laptops are built then some parts are thrown out b'cos of not passing QA and those parts are used instead of recycling them. I think, performance of the laptop is also not that great. I want to know, is there any performance test that customer can run to test to see it meets the speed. Is there any way, customers can file, class action lawsuit.

My wifi connection only connects locally and not to net, should I get an external card? I have a newer cheap gateway laptop and am having trouble connecting wifi spots, either choppy service or just connects locally with out going to the Internet. It's frustrating because at school everyone in a room can be online and I am without connection, I can't figure out how to get it to connect online and not just locally. Having said this my connection does work in places and some places no, I think my internal card is cheap and weak. Is that possible? gateway laptop powers up and fan runs, but absolutely nothing happens on screen...? Its a newer gateway i just picked up cheap. wondering if there is a more common problem ie: screen itself, cable to the screen, or the inverter? Where can I get a cheap hard drive for my laptop? My computer has crashed, and I need to get a new hard drive for it. I own a Gateway MT6711 Notebook. It has a 160 GB 5400 RPM SATA hard drive, and Windows Vista. I need a good place online to get one. I am a sophomore college student, so I don't have a lot of money to spend on it. My Gateway laptop isn't charging properly (charger or laptop?)? I seem to be having a little trouble with my laptop lately. At first, it seemed as if my laptop charger wasn't working, because I had to wiggle it around a bit before it would be able to charge. At first, that's all I needed to do. Eventually, I would have to wiggle the plug around a lot, and even then I had to sit very still to make sure the laptop didn't stop charging again. At first I thought it was the charger, because my dad took my mom's charger (I have a Gateway laptop, she has a Dell) and plugged it into my computer. It began charging again. I was going to use her charger temporarily until my dad could get me a new charger. (I know using different brand chargers for different brand computers is risky, but I desperately need my laptop for schoolwork.) But just last night, I had to wiggle around her charger in order for it to work. The same thing happened with my mother's charger to my own previously. It won't charge anymore. I know this is a Dell charger to a Gateway laptop, and that may be the reason why it's not charging anymore, but the situation is so similar to what happened to my charger that I'm suspecting that it is my laptop that is the problem, and not my charger. What is wrong with my laptop? Is it my charger? Is there a cheap solution or should I be saving up for a new laptop? 41 minutes left of battery on my computer.

Will this computer play The Sims 3? I found this cheap new Gateway laptop online. I have a Gateway right now and i'm worried that it won't play The Sims 3. The laptop i am looking into buying is the new Gateway T-6345u in the "T" series. I have tried to compare the tech specs of this computer to the ones required for to play The Sims 3, but I don't quite know for sure if it will play on it. Could someone please go on "gateway.com", go into the "T" series laptops, and find the T-6345u and compare the tech specs to the ones required for The Sims 3, and tell me if it will play on it smoothly?

What's the cheapest company I can send my 80GB dead laptop hard drive to, to get the data recovered? I have a laptop hard drive that is too dead for me to boot up in my Gateway laptop, but is just alive enough that a hard drive recovery company could get the data off of it.

Gateway Laptop keeps freezing - what are my options? I have a gateway tablet pc that is 1 year old and it keeps freezing. Not like a memory dump, but just completely freezes in the middle of any program or even if it is just sitting there. The IT people here at UD think that my motherboard is bad. I would like to know my options - first of all, is it my motherboard for sure? Also, they said that a repair of this type would cost around $700 if I send it back to gateway. Are there any cheaper options, such as finding a motherboard on my own and paying someone to install it? Thanks I guess I should also say that about 6 months ago I spilled a coke on it. I haven't had any problems until about a month ago but the IT people think that this is probably the cause.

Where Can I find a CDRW+DVDRW drive for my solo5300 laptop cheap? Because the laptop is older it's got a 1.0 usb connection which is too slow for an external drive, something happened to the pcmcia slot so a card adapter is out as well. Good, parially cheap Laptop? Ok, I am looking into buying a NEW laptop. My last one was a gateway...I HATED it. Within the past few months, it completly crapped out. I need a somewhat affordable computer. Nothing over $1000. I really would like a Mac. What about the Mac Mini? I need to know a good compter that is going to last more than 2 and a half years. And my last laptop was a higher end one too. It just didn't hold up. If you know anything about getting it replaced without a warrenty that would also be nice.
