What could void a Gateway laptop's warranty? Hi everyone. So my NV59 notebook's fan got broken. I don't know what exactly happened to it but it makes a very weird and loud sound so i took it to gateway's support center and the woman there told me there was some screws missing in the back of laptop, they were like 6 missing so she asked me if i ever opened the computer and i said no (i really haven't, i don't know what happened to those screws i think they were just sloppy and could've gotten lost) so the girl told me the warranty could be voided if the technician said it's been opened or some pieces have been replaced. How could they tell my notebook has been opened? :s is there a seal or some tape that could show the computer has been opened/modified? Because it would suck if they canceled the warranty cause of the screws missing. Thanks in advance.
How Much Memory Does My Computer Support? My PC is a Gateway 831GM Media Center PC. I've looked it up on the internet, but I've seen both 4GB and 2GB as max, so I'm not sure which. The computer has a 64-bit processor (Intel Pentium 4 HT 3GHz), so I would think that the motherboard would support 4GB max. Anyone know for sure? Thanks!
Help with recovering a driver for Gateway GT5404 desktop? I have a Gateway GT5404 deskyop...I uninstalled Vista a while ago and installed XP Home Professional. I have mistakenly deleted the modem driver "PCI Simple Communication Driver"...I was referring to this as a solution: http://support.gateway.com/s/issues/2-2408194883.shtml ..problem is, I'm not able to pull up in a search "Gateway Recovery Center" window. ..when I try to repair/reinstall the driver via Device Manager, it routs me through the Hardware Wizard and prompt me to search online (which I naturally cannot do or prompt me for a local location for the drivers, which I also do not have). Sigh Any suggestions? Even tho I switched OS's to XP, there still is an H: recovery partition, where I thought the driver may be but I cannot seem to access it. (sigh again) anyone w/ more tech savvy than myself able to direct me? Possible to DL from another computer to a flash drive then use that? I'm stumped, and all I have is the little yellow splat in the device manager that tells me the driver is gobe. ANY help appreciated
Looking for a touch screen media center PC that can support dual monitors.? I am looking for a touch screen media center PC that can support dual monitors. I currently have a desktop where I have enabled dual monitors, this way I can play video from my PC on to my TV. It seems as though touch screen media center PC's only work with the single monitor, no additional video out (HDMI, DMI, VGA). I like all the features of these PC's, but if I must watch all my video on the 24" included monitor instead of my 50" HDTV then I will stick with a normal desktop computer versus the touch screen. Models I have looked at include Sony VAIO L All-in-One Touchscreen, HP TouchSmart 600xt, as well as Gateway and HP's touchscreen options. Why do non of these support video out/dual monitors to stream my computer video on to my HDTV, versus the all in one included touch screen monitor?
System recovery with no disc just link - gateway computer mx6421 windows xp? i was told i could follow this link http://support.gateway.com/s/SOFTWARE/Medialess/MLXPH2/MLXPH2su9.shtml in order to preform a system recovery without the disc since I never received one. However after I hit F11 it asks me to insert a disc. The ONLY disc I did receive says" Gateway Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 Operating System Disc" however once I place that disc in it only reaches 18% and either the computer will shut down uexpectingly or it says certain files need to be aborted or retried. Upon clicking retry I get the same message. When I click abort I am given an option to either start from all over again (which I have done SEVERAL times) or restart (which restarts the computer). I do not know what I can do to fix this. I can not afford to pay gateway or geek squad $200. I was told I have a virus/spyware/malware or something like that on my computer and I've down scans on the drivers, virus scans, system restore and although they say it's gone it is not. Microsoft has assisted me however they are lost as well. (They told me to hit f10 and pick option 2 but I do not have an option 2) just 1, 3, 4 My computer keeps shutting down and gives me a blue screen with white writing I can not read. I would like to preform a system recovery since I have everything backed up. I just want my computer back. =( I've bee dealing with this for over a week and really need some help and hope please =(

Two very similar Gateway notebooks, need help deciding...? M6931 http://support.gateway.com/s/Mobile/Q106/BladeC/1013918Rsp2.shtml MT6730 http://support.gateway.com/s/Mobile/2008/OasisSR/1015099R/1015099Rsp4.shtml I can get either for about same price, within forty bucks of each other. I see differences, such as processor types, 667 MHz vs 533 MHz type 2GB RAM, Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator X3100 as opposed to Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 950, etc. The 6931 runs XP Home Media Center, the 6730 runs Vista Premium. Thnx in advance for opinions

Where can I find the Ethernet Controller driver for my Gateway 610 All-in-One computer? I made this Yahoo! Answers post with the hope of helping others avoid the frustrating search that I went through today. For some unknown reason, Gateway's support site no longer offers a wired Ethernet driver download for any of 610 All-in-One PCs. My exact model is the 610X (2900210), but I would be surprised if these don't work for all 610 models. Either way, here's the info that you may be looking for. The Ethernet Controller is an "Intel® PRO/100 VE Network Connection" and you can download the Windows XP drivers (works with Media Center Edition) here: http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=18586&ProdId=407&lang=eng The file is called PROXP.exe. Not the one above it, PROEM64T.exe. Good luck!

New computer: Vista or XP Media Center edition? I want a new laptop, and Gateway now offers Vista Home OR XP Media Center. Since I want to use more of my hard drive and don't want to adopt Vista this early in the game and I won't be buying a system that can support Aero effectively, shouldn't I opt for XP instead? What do you think?

What happened to my yahoo toolbar and my edit view file toolbar? My first day with my new Gateway computer with vista. I hate it! Its much different than XP. I had both my yahoo toolbar and my edit view Navigation tool bar and bingo, they both disappeared and I've been to the support center and done everything I was told to do and nothing works!! Even my top address bar is now hidden. I have to go to the top right corner of my screen to bring up my address bar and when I move my mouse from the corner, the address bar disappears.

USB ports supplying power but not recognizing devices? Only 1 port seems to be working and it is running the Logitech wireless mouse/keyboard. I've tried each port with a Sandisk micro cruzer and there's power running to the drive but it isn't recognized. I've tried to uninstall the drives via the device manager with no luck. I also tried using the "fix it for me option" http://support.microsoft.com/kb/817900 from that link. No luck. Computer is a Gateway GT4016 running XP Media Center Edition SP3. Please help! I can almost promise these all are screwed up from my niece and nephew plugging in USB devices and ripping them back out. I need to know how to reverse this damage. Anyone?

Can someone help me with a computer problem? This is exactly what I get when i boot my computer, ( i can still access it, so it's probably not detramental. ) Warning ! The catalyst control center is not supported by the driver version of your enables graphics adapter. Please update your ATI graphics driver, or enable your ATI adapter using the display manager. Background information - I'm running on a windows vista. The previous computer, is the exact same computer that I've just gotten. I have the Gateway FX 6000 series. I am using the cords from that computer, on this one. And probably the same adapter? My previous computer that I got 8 days ago I returned because it's hard driveve was corrupted, and they took the parts from this one, because I thought it was going to be a quick fix, and I didn't bring the parts for the other one ( cords, keyboard, mouse, wiresETCct ) Any Ideas? If you know how to fix it, please explain it in steps and versimplisticic. I'm not the best with computers. It is now saying, when I go into the adapter part of the display settings - That my adapter is working properly. Am I missing something? Adapter is called - ATI Radeon HD 4850 series, So if it's working properly.. tell me, and if I need to download something - Help me figure out what to download, and where to download it. 8D It also shows it's up to date, as the person below has stated - And it's also enables. I don't get computers one bit.
what is the common charge? Inez is putting up decorations for her sister's quinceanera (fifteenth birthday party). She ties three light silk ribbons together to the top of a gateway and hangs a rubber balloon from each ribbon. To include the effects of the gravitational and buoyant forces on it, each balloon can be modeled as a particle of mass 2.00 g, with its center 50.0 cm from the point of support. To show off the colors of the balloons, Inez rubs the whole surface of each balloon with her woolen scarf to make them hang separately with gaps between them. The centers of the hanging balloons form a horizontal equilateral triangle with sides 28.0 cm long. What is the common charge each balloon carries? i don't think the answer is 12 billion volts

Can anyone help me with my router and modem? Cant connect to the internet? When I power up only my terayon modem (TCM200), the send led, and receive led both blink green, but the online led blinks red. The message led does not blink at all. Then, I power up my dlink router (DIR-625), the power light comes on, along with a flickering wireless light, a steady flashing circle with a triangle inside of it, and three circles come alight aswell, in the shape of the "gametap" logo (the modem still looks the same). Then I power up my pc, and on the router a LAN light pops up as well, because its hard wired. On my pc, i open up the network and sharing center, and it shows my pc connected to my private network "dlink" and it shows that dlink is not connected to the internet. When i click on the red x, between my dlink network and the internet, vista tries to identify the problem, and suggests there may be a problem with my domain name server (DNS) configuration. "windows failed to find the well known host "www.microsoft.com" using DNS. The server may be down. -> windows found a problem that cannot be repaired automatically. Contact isp.. Blah blah.. Then it opens up a troubleshoot support page, as if i could find the solution to my problem there... So i unable to connect to the internet, ive tried going to 192.168.0.1 to play around there. Been unsuccessful. Tried power cycling modem and router.. Nothing from that. Going to go to the cmd prompt and ipconfig, and ping the ip now.... Got my ip, my subnet mask, and default gateway. Pinged the ip and gateway.. Not sure what that does.. Just read it somewhere. Looking for help, im posting this via my iphone. And im not a wiz at this, only 15 y/o.
Why doesn't a DVD no longer play in my laptop? I use Windows Media Center, press the start button, and keep getting an error message: "The DVD may be in use by another application (Is it not). If all other applications are closed (they are), the video resolution may need to be lowered, or the display connection type may not support the playback of the DVD." I tried Windows Media Player and I get this message: 'Windows Media Player cannot play this DVD because there is a problem with digital copy protection between your DVD drive, decoder, and video card. Try installing an updated driver for your video card." Real Player doesn't work either. I used to be able to play a DVD, now I can't. I haven't done anything to it I know of. I've updated the drivers. I've run the Media Center set up about 10 times now, with different displays, to no avail. It's a Gateway less than 2 years old, if that helps. My pc crashes all the time ,because of the info below can you help? Download and install new motherboard BIOS Gateway Inc. has released a new BIOS update for Gateway systems. What is the BIOS? The basic input/output system (BIOS) is software built into a computer that is run when the computer is first turned on. Among other things, this software starts the operating system and supports the transfer of information between hardware devices (such as the keyboard and the monitor). Recommendation -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Gateway Inc. recommends that you download and install the BIOS update. Note Before you install the update, you should back up your files and folders. How do I back up my files and folders using Windows Vista? Click to open Backup and Restore Center Note The Backup and Restore Center is not included in Windows Vista Starter Edition. Click Back up files, and then follow the steps in the wizard. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation. Warning Be careful when changing BIOS settings. The BIOS interface is designed for advanced users, and it's possible to change a setting that could prevent your computer from starting correctly. If you are not comfortable performing the following steps, contact Gateway Inc. for assistance. To download and install the update follow these steps: Go online to the Gateway Inc. website to download and install the BIOS update for Gateway systems: Gateway Inc. On the Gateway Inc. website, check the Supported Computers and Parts list to make sure that the BIOS update applies to your computer model. If your computer model is not listed, do not install the BIOS update. You should contact Gateway Inc. for assistance. Warning Installing the wrong BIOS for your computer can make your computer inoperable. On the Gateway Inc. website, click How to Install. This opens a separate browser window containing BIOS installation instructions (named "Information and Instructions about this download file"). Print these instructions. On the Gateway Inc. website, click Download Now. In the Save As dialog box, click Save, and then save the file to your computer. When the download has finished, follow the steps in the BIOS installation instructions (named "Information and Instructions about this download file") that you printed. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Rate this response:Provide Feedback

no surround sound in windows 7? no matter what i do, nothing will give me true surround sound. I only have 2 options of outputting sound from my computer, 3.5mm jack, which im pretty sure doesnt support surround sound, and hdmi out. Heres the kicker: when i change my output source via control panel/sounds, to the hdmi output, I get only stereo. but when i change the output to the 3.5mm jack, I can hear from all 5 speakers. Isnt that ass backwards? I mean im pretty sure hdmi supports digital audio and 3.5mm jack does not, so youd think it would be the other way around. Ohh, and i say i can hear from all 5 speakers when using the 3.5 jack, but it isnt true surround sound, i think. i think my receiver is emulating it (although it has a surround sound emulation setting, and i make sure it is off and that its on dolby pro logic 2 surround sound) and the reason i think this is because when i have the audio out set to the 3.5mm and run audio test files to test each speaker, (you know the ones that say audibly 'left front speaker ...... right front speaker ..... and so on) i can only hear when she say front left and right speakers, in the correct speaker. but when i have it set to hdmi audio, i can hear front and rear left out of the front left speaker, and i can hear front right, rear right, and center out of the right speaker. also, when its on hdmi, i can go to the control pannel/sound and click on realtek digital audio (the hdmi) and under advanced tab under default format there is only 2 channel options (a lot of em, from 16bit 44,110 hz up to 24bit 192,000 hz, but all of em are proceeded by 2 chanel) But when i select the speakers under control panel/sound (the 3.5mm jack) i have the same options, only none of them are proceeded by ANY channel numbers. heres a screenshot of each so you can see what i mean: http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f252/flynt169/hdmi.png http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f252/flynt169/speakers.png Here are my specs and connections: computer:gateway gm5474 surround sound reciever: rca rt2870 tv: vizio vx52lfhdtv10a further specs on computer: windows 7 ult. 64x, using realtek hd audio manager or just the control pannel/sound. i found out they both do the same thing. connections: i have the hdmi going from the computer, into the tv. and then an optical audio out from my tv to the reciever. i have the 3.5mm jack going directly into the reciever

Why did my brand new laptop stop playing DVDs??? I have a brand new Gateway laptop. I have had no problems watching DVDs since buying this computer. Watched 2 last night. Now, tonight, I get these messages when trying to watch a dvd. On Windows Media Center: Cannot Play DVD The dvd may be in use by another application. If all other applications are closed, the video resolution may need to be lowered or the display connection type may not support playback of the DVD. On Windows Media Player: Windows Media Player cannot play this DVD because there is a problem with digital copy protection between your DVD drive, decoder, and video card. Try installing an updated driver for your video card. I have tried 2 different DVDs and one I have watched on this computer as recently as last night. Anyone know what the deal is??? How could the driver need updating when I bought the laptop a week ago?? Also, if I need those codecs then why did the DVDs play fine yesterday?
Why does my laptop play DVD's intermittently? Store bought DVD sometimes will play, and sometimes it won't. With Windows Media Center I get the message: "The DVD may be in use by another application. If all other applications are closed, the video resolution may need to be lowered or the display connection may not support the playback of the DVD." Windows Media Players says, “Windows Media Player cannot play this DVD because there is a problem with digital copy protection between your DVD drive, decoder, and video card. Try installing an updated driver for your video card.” Same for Real Player. I have updated drivers till I’m blue in the face. I have the most current codec, as far as I know. I’ve tried changing the resolution, but it does not help. And I think that’s bull anyway, because it USED to work just fine. This particular DVD will play the “commercial” at the beginning of the DVD, but not the movie itself. It's an Gateway about 3 years old. I've tried posting this on their website without getting a response that make sense. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Do you approve of these tactics? Well, it looks like the Obama campaign is pulling out all the stops…and they'll most likely get away with it. Illegal get-out-the-vote drives are being held in swing state mosques, Central Ohioans Against Terrorism is reporting: The group, Muslim Americans for Obama, has announced a series of "get out the vote" events at mosques in Michigan, Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Virginia, and Ohio this week during Ramadan celebrations. As can be seen in the announcement reprinted below, the organization admits these are "get out the vote" events masquerading as "voter registration": Muslim Americans for Obama will be working to get out the vote for Sen. Obama, and they need help registering voters! Volunteers need not be Muslim, though appropriate attire is advised (no sleeveless tops; long pants and ankle-length skirts recommended). These get out the vote events, of course, flagrantly violate the tax exempt status of these participating mosques, including our own local Noor Islamic Cultural Center, which are strictly prohibited from supporting or endorsing any kind of partisan political activity — even when they claim it is only "voter registration". In fact, it was these kinds of activities that eventually sunk the Christian Coalition's tax exempt status with the IRS. Voter registration drives at religious institutions are only legal if the organization is non-partisan. "Muslims for Obama", the sponsor of these events, is unquestionably a partisan organization, and thus, any participation by these mosques is illegal and violates their tax exempt status. Additionally, since the Muslims for Obama announcement says that these voter registration drives are intended to "get out the vote for Sen. Obama", they are considered partisan under the law and illegal on that basis as well - in addition to the fact that these events are sponsored by a partisan organization. Is anybody going to do anything about this? Who are the attorney generals in the states involved? Nancy H. Rogers, D, Ohio. Mike Cox, R. Michigan Andrew Cuomo, D. New York Tom Corbitt, R. Pennsylvania Ann Milgram, D. New Jersey Bob McDonnell, R. Virginia Via: Gateway Pundit, who also reports: More… Ohio Obama supporters are dragging homeless people off the streets in to vote. and: It figures… The Iraqi Parliament just banned using mosques during election times: …The law includes a provision that allocates 25 percent of the seats to women and a prohibition on the use of mosques, pictures of clerical leaders and government institutions during the campaign season. But, they don't have Barack Obama on the ballot. Andrew McCarthy reports on Obama's "funny money": My pal Diana West points me to Ken Timmerman's must-read Newsmax column — which naturally is getting no coverage in the MSM — about Sen. Obama's eye-popping fundraising operation. Bottom line: the would-be President of the World is raising goo-gobs of money from foreigners outside the United States (a violation of federal law), and matching goo-gobs of money inside the United States from phantoms who are blowing out the individual contribution limits by, among other devices, making up identies and breaking up contributions in amounts less than $200, for which reporting requirements are less rigorous. According to Ken, the Obama campaign has raised nearly half a billion dollars ($429.6M) but refuses to provide the names of most of the donors. Election law requires the campaign to track this information but not for it to disclose the names of those who donate less than $200, which is most Obama donors. (Sen. McCain discloses the names of all donors.) The Obama campaign has raised millions upon millions of dollars from outside the United States. Only Americans living overseas may lawfully contribute, but because the Obama vetting machinery is negligent (or worse), the probability is that enormous sums are coming from foreigners. The campaign knows the FEC is a lethargic agency and won't have a full accounting until perhaps years after the election. This typifies the domestic fundraising issue: In a letter dated June 25, 2008, the FEC asked the Obama campaign to verify a series of $25 donations from a contributor identified as "Will, Good" from Austin, Texas. Mr. Good Will listed his employer as "Loving" and his profession as "You." A Newsmax analysis of the 1.4 million individual contributions in the latest master file for the Obama campaign discovered 1,000 separate entries for Mr. Good Will, most of them for $25. In total, Mr. Good Will gave $17,375. Following this and subsequent FEC requests, campaign records show that 330 contributions from Mr. Good Will were credited back to a credit card. But the most recent report, filed on Sept. 20, showed a net cumulative balance of $8,950 — still well over the $4,600 limit. Blah. Go read the entire thing if your heart can tak

What is your opinion MontCo welcomes illegals if the arrest is for violent crime, ICE will NOT be contacted? Montgomery County is opening its doors to illegal immigrants as its neighbors around the Washington region crack down on them. While counties across the area are slamming their doors shut to illegals through federal enforcement, Montgomery County's communication with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials is limited to a weekly fax of names. And now the county is fighting an effort to crack down statewide. The county's Department of Corrections sends the name of every inmate detained on charges of violent crime -- without regard to their immigration status -- to ICE weekly, according to county spokesman Patrick Lacefield. "If any arrest is for violent crimes, then ICE will NOT be contacted, regardless of the individual's legal status and/or gang affiliation," county policy reads. Montgomery's policies are "downright laissez faire," said Howard County sheriff's spokesman Mark Verderaime, who added that he believes Howard is too soft on illegal immigrants as well. The Center for Immigration Studies, a think tank that supports low immigration, called it a "dangerous sanctuary policy." Montgomery's neighboring counties, Frederick and Prince George's, are reining in illegal immigration through federal enforcement programs. Frederick uses the federal 287(g) program, which gives local police the power to identify, investigate and detain illegal immigrants. Frederick Sheriff Charles Jenkins said the 18 correctional officers and 10 law enforcement officers trained under 287(g) have identified more than 600 illegal immigrants since implementing the program two years ago. He has pointed to Montgomery's lack of enforcement as a reason for Frederick's problems with illegals. "People that commit crimes don't recognize jurisdictional boundaries," he said. Maryland Del. Patrick L. McDonough is sponsoring a bill in the General Assembly that would implement 287(g) statewide in Maryland, which is being fought by Montgomery's state lawmakers. "I think it may lead to racial profiling," said Montgomery County Del. Susan C. Lee, D-Bethesda. She added she was worried about creating a state of fear so illegals wouldn't report crimes. "Illegal immigrants aren't just criminals, they can also be victims." McDonough said Montgomery's policies have made the county a safe haven for gangs, making it more difficult in his district, Baltimore County, to fight gang violence. "The gateway into this state creating problems with illegals is Montgomery," said McDonough, a Republican. "[Montgomery's] open-door policy has caused a lot of violence in the state." He also is concerned that an influx of illegals will flow across the Potomac River once Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell expands the 287(g) program throughout his state. Illegals "are going to leave the ship and come over here," McDonough said. Corey Stewart, chairman of Prince William County's Board of Supervisors, said his county has dumped a number of illegals into Montgomery since implementing 287(g) in 2007. "Clearly what happened in Prince William County is that a lot of the illegal immigrants are leaving and going to Montgomery," he said, citing the increase in Montgomery's gang-related crimes over the past several years. Meanwhile, Prince William's crime rate has dropped 38 percent. NDA Government and terrorism. How effective was it? Friends supporting BJP, I have read so many allegations from you folks against Congress on mishandling terrorism. What is your say only one term of NDA regime? I have some highlights of NDA regime and I did include only the high profile attacks, not the attacks that unfortunately happen every day in Kashmir and Naxal affected areas. - 2000, Dec 22:Six Lashkar-e-Taiba militants sneak into the Red Fort and open indiscriminate firing on the guards of 7th Battallion of Rajputana Rifles killing three including a civilian. - 2001, October 1: Attack on Jammu and Kashmir state assembly in Srinagar, killing 35 people and injuring 40 more. - 2001, December 13, Attack on Indian parliament, 6 police, 1 civilian and 5 terrorists killed. - 2002, January 22: Attack on American Center in Kolkata, killing five people. - 2002, May 13: Islamic extremists cut the rails that caused twelve people are killed in the Jaunpur train crash. - 2002, September 10: A train derailment kills 130 people in the Rafiganj rail disaster. Naxalite terrorism is suspected. - 2002, September 25: Two terrorists belonging to the Jaish-e-Mohammed group raid the Akshardham temple complex in Ahmedabad, killing 30 people and injured several - 2003, August 25, At least 48 people were killed and 150 injured in two blasts in south Mumbai – one near the Gateway of India at the other at the Zaveri Bazaar. I am not including terrorists capturing our land resulting into Kargil war, or Indian Airlines Flight 814, because that are too big incidents. How do you justify hugging the people responsible for attacking our parliament and red fort? How do you justify calling the very same people for Agra summit who were responsible for all these attacks? What was our internal security and what was our foreign policy? Please feel free to add some other incidents if I have forgotten any. @ Shai I started with answering because I found statements most interesting, what about "sharm-e-shaikh"? I said in my one of the answers about "sharm-e-shaikh" and Baluchistan and I would repeat that once again, The problem with you guys is, you guys believe on Pakistan media more than Indian Prime Minister. You guys made so much of noise about the Baloochistaan and the dossier handed over to India in Egypt. Now see what is Pakistan saying? This is just an example what the kind of propaganda war against the government is going on in India. A segment of people create issue from no where and make government a culprit. http://www.indianexpress.com/news/paks-latest-flip-flop-no-baloch-dossier-given-to-india/516307/ You may say the Indian express is a mouthpiece of congress as you always say thus I am posting another link that you cannot deny: http://www.nation.com.pk/pakistan-news-newspaper-daily-english-online/Politics/12-Sep-2009/No-dossier-on-Balochistan-handed-to-India-Qureshi Mr. 3rd Umpire, do you remember that POTA was formed by scrapping TADA? @ all, you guys gave me lot of terrorist attacks during UPA regime. Are you justifying terrorist activities during NDA period with UPA period? And saying even NDA was ineffective on terrorism? I am accepting UPA government's last term was failure when it comes to terrorism. Do you dare to accept that NDA was failure when it comes to terrorism? Because 3rd Umpire raised question of POTA, I am saying POTA and TADA are nothing but the political issues, NDA government comes to power they scrap TADA and enforce POTA, UPA government comes to power they scrap POTA and enforce Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. That is just eyewash, the need it better intelligence. Do you agree? I am accepting Mr. Shivraj Patil was a failed Internal affairs minister because he could not stop terrorism and so was Mr. L K Adwani. Do you accept? I am saying UPA's 2nd term is successful on terrorism so far after 26/11, because there had not been any terrorist attack out of J&K. Are you accepting that? Miss Maitree, that is why one should read good books not Panchjanya, Saamanaa etc, so that you will good information. If you have any answer on these terrorist attacks during NDA regime, please let us know. Please do not divert the topic by talking irrelevant topics. Here the discussion is about the terrorist attacks during NDA period, when assemblies, Red fort, parliament, Akshardham, basically all the places of National pride were attacked and the home minister was the Lauh Purush. I am accepting that Mr. Shiv Raj Patil was a failure as a Home Minister, is their any BJP supporter on this forum who dares to accept that their home Minister in NDA period Mr. L K Advani was a failure as Home Minister? @ Shai, Pakistan would plan on these websites and neither these websites would know Pakistan's plans. So these websites are just the view of some individuals which may or may not be right. By the way, how is government of India responsible for these views? My question is did you carried away by the propaganda of Pakistani media about dossier including Baluchistan or not? If yes, then feel sorry about that, if not then tell me why should Indian government feel same about Sharm-E-Shaikh? @ Dear 3rd Umpire, you have taken me totally wrong, I would have chosen your answer as the best answer if as you suggest "Let the world live in peace" not answers so beautifully. Not because your answer was the best but for your best debate. I like healthy and good debates. I am still keeping this question open hoping for a better answer. If not then I would follow your suggestion. Today is the last day I am leaving this question open and this is my last edit. I am giving you last opportunity to be honest. I am interesting observations from this question. I saw the culture of self claimed BJP / RSS supporters. Someone called Mr. Patil as Idiot and some one called Mr. Patil as Pork. I do not know if these folks really belong to BJP however this is not India culture. The way I reject the comments of Peter K, the same way I reject these comments, may you like or not, you cannot disrespect a person of your father and grandfather age just because he was ineffective. Second observation, Mr. Advani did not kill any terrorist at parliament, but it was security forces that killed them. Out of a dozen killed were 6 security person, and civilian. Internal Affairs ministry is responsible for each of the terrorist attacks in India for intelligence failure may it be Mr. Advani or may it be Mr. Patil or any XYZ person. If Internal Affairs ministry was not aware that terrorists are planing attacks places of national pride, such as parliament, red ford, akshardham, JK assembly etc, then why that internal affairs minister not failure in the same way as Mr. Shivraj Patil responsible for his failure for attacks in in tenure. If Internal Affairs ministry wasn't aware that terrorists have occupied 100s of km of land in Kargil then wouldn't I call it as its failure? I have lost my several brave soldiers because of the failure of Mr. L K Advani's ministry, why wouldn't I call him a failure the same way you call Mr. Patil as failure? And same thing with Kandahar? Why couldn't intelligence find out this in advance? Intelligence failure is the failure of home ministry. Once again, I have accepted, Mr. Patil was failure, and Mr. Chidambaram also repeats his mistakes, I will say he is also a failure or may be I will say Dr Singh is failure, do you accept Mr. L K ADVANI WAS A FAILURE AS HOME MINISTER?
Aren't brand-name computers the biggest rip-off around? I was scanning through the prices of the Gateways, Dells, Alienwares and Compaqs only to discover that I can buy a clone with a really fancy case with exactly the same internals, better warranty and customer support and full upgradability for about 40% LESS with no call centre in India! What do you think? MawDuce and Mercuri - You're both right of course, I normally build my own but someone told me that the brand name systems are coming down in price. I know that most are crap as far as quality is concerned (except of course, Alienware) so I was skeptical. Sure enough, still cheaper and better to build my own. And don't get me started on macs! LOL
help i have no idea wat this means some body explain in short text 10 points best answer in plain explantion? Overview Instant messaging (IM) and chat are technologies that facilitate near real-time text based communication between two or more participants over a network. It is important to understand that what separates chat and instant messaging from technologies such as e-mail is the perceived synchronicity of the communication by the user - Chat happens in real-time before your eyes. For this reason, some people consider communication via instant messaging to be less intrusive than communication via phone. However, some systems allow the sending of messages to people not currently logged on (offline messages), thus removing much of the difference between Instant Messaging and e-mail. Instant Messaging allows instantaneous communication between a number of parties simultaneously, by transmitting information quickly. Some IM systems allow users to use webcams and Microphone which made them more popular than others. Due to this feature users can have a real-time conversation. In addition IM has additional features such as: the immediate receipt of acknowledgment or reply, group chatting, conference services (including voice and video), conversation logging and file transfer. IM allows effective and efficient communication, featuring immediate receipt of acknowledgment or reply. In certain cases Instant Messaging involves additional features, which make it even more popular, i.e. to see the other party, e.g. by using web-cams, or to talk directly for free over the Internet. It is possible to save a conversation for later reference. Instant messages are typically logged in a local message history which closes the gap to the persistent nature of e-mails and facilitates quick exchange of information like URLs or document snippets (which can be unwieldy when communicated via telephone). [edit] History In early instant messaging programs each character appeared when it was typed. The UNIX "talk" command shown in these screenshots was popular in the 1980s and early 1990s.Instant messaging actually predates the Internet, first appearing on multi-user operating systems like CTSS and Multics[1] in the mid-1960s. Initially, many of these systems, such as CTSS'.SAVED, were used as notification systems for services like printing, but quickly were used to facilitate communication with other users logged in to the same machine. As networks developed, the protocols spread with the networks. Some of these used a peer-to-peer protocol (eg talk, ntalk and ytalk), while others required peers to connect to a server (see talker and IRC). During the Bulletin board system (BBS) phenomenon that peaked during the 1980s, some systems incorporated chat features which were similar to instant messaging; Freelancin'_Roundtable was one prime example. In the last half of the 1980s and into the early 1990s, the Quantum Link online service for Commodore 64 computers offered user-to-user messages between currently connected customers which they called "On-Line Messages" (or OLM for short). Quantum Link's better known later incarnation, America Online, offers a similar product under the name "AOL Instant Messages" (AIM). While the Quantum Link service ran on a Commodore 64, using only the Commodore's PETSCII text-graphics, the screen was visually divided up into sections and OLMs would appear as a yellow bar saying "Message From:" and the name of the sender along with the message across the top of whatever the user was already doing, and presented a list of options for responding.[2] As such, it could be considered a sort of GUI, albeit much more primitive than the later Unix, Windows and Macintosh based GUI IM programs. OLMs were what Q-Link called "Plus Services" meaning they charged an extra per-minute fee on top of the monthly Q-Link access costs. Modern, Internet-wide, GUI-based messaging clients, as they are known today, began to take off in the mid 1990s with ICQ (1996) being the first, followed by AOL Instant Messenger (AOL Instant Messenger, 1997). AOL later acquired Mirabilis, the creators of ICQ. A few years later ICQ (by now owned by AOL) was awarded two patents for instant messaging by the U.S. patent office. Meanwhile, other companies developed their own applications (Excite, MSN, Ubique, and Yahoo), each with its own proprietary protocol and client; users therefore had to run multiple client applications if they wished to use more than one of these networks. In 1998 IBM released IBM Lotus Sametime, a product based on technology acquired when IBM bought Haifa-based Ubique and Lexington-based Databeam. In 2000, an open source application and open standards-based protocol called Jabber was launched. Jabber servers could act as gateways to other IM protocols, reducing the need to run multiple clients. Multi-protocol clients such as Digsby,Pidgin, Trillian, Adium and Miranda can use any of the popular IM protocols by using additional local libraries for each protocol. IBM Lotus Sametime's November 2007 release added IBM Lotus Sametime Gateway support for XMPP. Recently, many instant messaging services have begun to offer video conferencing features, Voice Over IP (VoIP) and web conferencing services. Web conferencing services integrate both video conferencing and instant messaging capabilities. Some newer instant messaging companies are offering desktop sharing, IP radio, and IPTV to the voice and video features. The term "instant messenger" is a service mark of Time Warner[3] and may not be used in software not affiliated with AOL in the United States. For this reason, the instant messaging client formerly known as Gaim or gaim announced in April 2007 that they would be renamed "Pidgin"[4]. [edit] Cooperation Standard free instant messaging applications offer functions like file transfer, contact lists, the ability to have similtaneous converstations etc. These may be all the functions that a small business needs but larger organisations will require more sophisticated applications that can work together. The solution to finding applications capable of this is to use enterprise versions of instant messaging applications. These include titles like Jabber, Lotus Sametime, Microsoft Office Communicator, etc., which are often integrated with other enterprise applications such as workflow systems. These enterprise applications, or Enterprise Application Integration (EAI), are built to certain constraints, namely storing data in a common format. There have been several attempts to create a unified standard for instant messaging: IETF's SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) and SIMPLE (SIP for Instant Messaging and Presence Leveraging Extensions), APEX (Application Exchange), Prim (Presence and Instant Messaging Protocol), the open XML-based XMPP (Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol), more commonly known as Jabber and OMA's (Open Mobile Alliance) IMPS (Instant Messaging and Presence Service) created specifically for mobile devices. Most attempts at creating a unified standard for the major IM providers (AOL, Yahoo! and Microsoft) have failed and each continues to use its own proprietary protocol. However, while discussions at IETF were stalled, Reuters head of collaboration services, David Gurle (the founder of Microsoft's Real Time Communication and Collaboration business), signed the first inter-service provider connectivity agreement on September 2003. This agreement enabled AIM, ICQ and MSN Messenger users to talk with Reuters Messaging counterparts and vice-versa against an access fee. Following this, Microsoft, Yahoo! and AOL came to a deal where Microsoft's Live Communication Server 2005 users would also have the possibility to talk to public instant messaging users. This deal established SIP/SIMPLE as a standard for protocol interoperability and established a connectivity fee for accessing public instant messaging clouds. Separately, on October 13, 2005 Microsoft and Yahoo! announced that by (the Northern Hemisphere) summer of 2006 they would interoperate using SIP/SIMPLE which is followed on December 2005 by the AOL and Google strategic partnership deal where Google Talk users would be able to talk with AIM and ICQ users provided they have an identity at AOL. There are two ways to combine the many disparate protocols: One way is to combine the many disparate protocols inside the IM client application. The other way is to combine the many disparate protocols inside the IM server application. This approach moves the task of communicating to the other services to the server. Clients need not know or care about other IM protocols. For example, LCS 2005 Public IM Connectivity. This approach is popular in Jabber/XMPP servers however the so-called transport projects suffer the same reverse engineering difficulties as any other project involved with closed protocols or formats. Some approaches, such as that adopted by the Sonork enterprise IM software or the Jabber/XMPP network or Winpopup LAN Messenger, allow organizations to create their own private instant messaging network by enabling them to limit access to the server (often with the IM network entirely behind their firewall) and administer user permissions. Other corporate messaging systems allow registered users to also connect from outside the corporation LAN, by using a secure firewall-friendly HTTPS based protocol. Typically, a dedicated corporate IM server has several advantages such as pre-populated contact lists, integrated authentication, and better security and privacy. Some networks have made changes to prevent them from being utilized by such multi-network IM clients. For example, Trillian had to release several revisions and patches to allow its users to access the MSN, AOL, and Yahoo! networks, after changes were made to these networks. The major IM providers typically cite the need for formal agreements as well as security concerns as reasons for making these changes. [edit] Mobile Instant Messaging Mobile Instant Messaging (MIM) is a presence enabled messaging service that aims to transpose the desktop messaging experience to the usage scenario of being on the move. While several of the core ideas of the desktop experience on one hand apply to a connected mobile device, others do not: Users usually only look at their phone's screen — presence status changes might occur under different circumstances as happens at the desktop, and several functional limits exist based on the fact that the vast majority of mobile communication devices are chosen by their users to fit into the palm of their hand. Some of the form factor and mobility related differences need to be taken into account in order to create a really adequate, powerful and yet convenient mobile experience: radio bandwidth, memory size, availability of media formats, keypad based input, screen output, CPU performance and battery power are core issues that desktop device users and even nomadic users with connected network. [edit] Friend-to-friend networks Instant Messaging may be done in a Friend-to-friend network, in which each node connects to the friends on the friendslist. This allows for communication with friends of friends and for the building of chatrooms for instant messages with all friends on that network. Emotions are often expressed in shorthand. For example; lol. But a movement is currently underway to be more accurate with the emotional expression. Real time reactions such as (chortle) (snort) (guffaw) or (eye-roll) are rapidly taking the place of acronyms.[citation needed] [edit] Business application Instant messaging has proven to be similar to personal computers, e-mail, and the WWW, in that its adoption for use as a business communications medium was driven primarily by individual employees using consumer software at work, rather than by formal mandate or provisioning by corporate information technology departments. Tens of millions of the consumer IM accounts in use are being used for business purposes by employees of companies and other organizations. In response to the demand for business-grade IM and the need to ensure security and legal compliance, a new type of instant messaging, called "Enterprise Instant Messaging" ("EIM") was created when Lotus Software launched IBM Lotus Sametime in 1998. Microsoft followed suit shortly thereafter with Microsoft Exchange Instant Messaging, later created a new platform called Microsoft Office Live Communications Server, and released Office Communications Server 2007 in October 2007. Both IBM Lotus and Microsoft have introduced federation between their EIM systems and some of the public IM networks so that employees may use a single interface to both their internal EIM system and their contacts on AOL, MSN, and Yahoo!. Current leading EIM platforms include IBM Lotus Sametime, Microsoft Office Communications Server, and Jabber XCP. In addition, industry-focused EIM platforms such as IMtrader from Pivot Incorporated, Reuters Messaging, and Bloomberg Messaging provide enhanced IM capabilities to financial services companies. The adoption of IM across corporate networks outside of the control of IT organizations creates risks and liabilities for companies who do not effectively manage and support IM use. Companies implement specialized IM archiving and security products and services like those from Secure Computing, Akonix, SurfControl, and ScanSafe to mitigate these risks and provide safe, secure, productive instant messaging capabilities to their employees. [edit] Practical Use in Enterprise The popular embrace of IM technology for sharing information has quickly led to organizations adopting IM solutions for the perceived advantages that can be brought by it. As organizations are becoming more information based (McNurlin & Sprague, 2006, p.499) the need for effective knowledge sharing, team working and collaborative environments amongst employees has become vital, especially within more geographically dispersed teams. Typically IM conversations tend to have a certain "character", they are often short and only cover one topic. Media-switching and multitasking are common throughout, however IM might also be used between established coworkers and friends for longer, more intermittent conversation. In their report of IM use at the workplace Nardi et al. (2000) identifies the four primary functions of IM which are often cited in other reports, These primary functions are: Quick Questions and Clarifications Coordinating and scheduling tasks Coordinating impromptu social meetings Keeping in touch with friends and family IM is perhaps best suited to "Quick Questions and Clarifications" as this is the most often mentioned attribute in other reports. A user can "respond rapidly without the overhead of telephone or FTF interaction. For example, IDC reports, "Users see IM as a medium for quick, semi-permanent ‘flashes’ that beg a near-immediate response" (Isaacs et al., 2002). Nardi's second and third observations are enabled in part due to the "Presence Awareness" feature of IM clients in which the user knows who is "available". This is the most relevant for colleagues who share the same physical space as each other and even paves the way for other mediums to take up the task of communication e.g. F2F or Phone. The implication is that viable communication of any sort can in someway be encouraged through IM's "Presence Awareness" feature. (Issacs et al, 2002) supports this view, "IM in business might not be the main tool for of communication, it could just be the meeting point for another type of media e.g. conference calls. Nardi's third and fourth observations focus on the social use of IM, which have also been widely publicized in other report. That IM is used for keeping in touch with friends and arranging social events has led some employers to believe that it is used primarily for this purpose. According to (Issacs et al, 2002) a market study found that "'Fear of losing employee productivity’ was the greatest concern of businesses in regards to instant messaging". The study by (Issacs et al, 2002) goes on to suggest this fear is unfounded as it was found that on average "only 13% of conversations contained personal topics", and "only 6.4% were exclusively personal". [edit] Review of Products "IM solutions can typically be catagorised into two types: Enterprise Instant Messaging (EIM) and Consumer Instant Mesaging (CIM). Enterprise solutions use an internal IM server, however this isn't always feasible, particularly for smaller businesses with limited budgets. The second option, using a (CIM) provides the advantage of being inexpensive to implement and has little need for investing in new hardware or server software. However, in recent years open source IM clients such as Jabber have emerged that provide free EIM grade solutions. (Wikipedia,. 2008) For corporate use encryption and conversation archiving are usually regarded as important features due to security concerns. Sometimes the use of different operating systems in organizations calls for the use of software that supports more than one platform. For example many software companies use Windows XP in administration departments but have software developers who use Linux. Most people have had experience of using online chat and messaging over the internet whether it is with Microsoft's Windows Live Messenger, Skype or e-mail. One form of chat and messaging currently popular is Bebo. It is a non-corporate form of messaging which allows its user to create and maintain a social network. Libraries use chat applications and Morris Messenger is an application commonly used by them. This is a power based instant messenger, which uses Perl, SQL, and small Java. It accepts input from both staff and regular customers and saves important information in an SQL database built for the system. [edit] Risks and liabilities Although instant messaging delivers many benefits, it also carries with it certain risks and liabilities, particularly when used in workplaces. Among these risks and liabilities are: Security risks (e.g. IM used to infect computers with spyware, viruses, trojans, worms) Compliance risks Inappropriate use Intellectual property leakage Crackers (malicious "hacker" or black hat hacker) have consistently used IM networks as vectors for delivering phishing attempts, "poison URL's", and virus-laden file attachments from 2004 to the present, with over 1100 discrete attacks listed by the IM Security Center[5] in 2004-2007. Hackers use two methods of delivering malicious code through IM: delivery of virus, trojan, or spyware within an infected file, and the use of "socially engineered" text with a web address that entices the recipient to click on a URL that connects him or her to a website that then downloads malicious code. Viruses, worms, and trojans typically propagate by sending themselves rapidly through the infected user's buddy list. An effective attack using a poison URL may reach tens of thousands of people in minutes when each person's buddy list receives messages appearing to be from a trusted friend. The recipients click on the web address, and the entire cycle starts again. Infections may range from nuisance to criminal, and are becoming more sophisticated each year. In addition to the malicious code threat, the use of instant messaging at work also creates a risk of non-compliance to laws and regulations governing the use of electronic communications in businesses. In the United States alone there are over 10,000 laws and regulations related to electronic messaging and records retention.[6] The more well-known of these include the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, HIPAA, and SEC 17a-3. Clarification from the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority ("FINRA") was issued to member firms in the financial services industry in December, 2007, noting that "electronic communications", "email", and "electronic correspondence" may be used interchangeably and can include such forms of electronic messaging as instant messaging and text messaging.[7] Changes to Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, effective December 1, 2006, created a new category for electronic records which may be requested during discovery (law) in legal proceedings. Most countries around the world also regulate the use of electronic messaging and electronic records retention in similar fashion to the United States. The most common regulations related to IM at work involve the need to produce archived business communications to satisfy government or judicial requests under law. Many instant messaging communications fall into the category of business communications that must be archived and retrievable. Organizations of all types must protect themselves from the liability of their employees' inappropriate use of IM. The informal, immediate, and ostensibly anonymous nature of instant messaging makes it a candidate for abuse in the workplace. The topic of inappropriate IM use became front page news in October 2006 when Congressman Mark Foley resigned his seat after admitting sending offensive instant messages of a sexual nature to underage former House pages from his Congressional office PC. The Mark Foley Scandal led to media coverage and mainstream newspaper articles warning of the risks of inappropriate IM use in workplaces. In most countries, corporations have a legal responsibility to ensure harassment-free work environment for employees. The use of corporate-owned computers, networks, and software to harass an individual or spread inappropriate jokes or language creates a liability for not only the offender but also the employer. A survey by IM archiving and security provider Akonix Systems, Inc. in March 2007 showed that 31% of respondents had been harassed over IM at work.[8] Companies now include instant messaging as an integral component of their policies on appropriate use of the World Wide Web, e-mail, and other corporate assets. Within the company there is also the risk of employees using instant messaging to release confidential information and project details to an outside source. This issue is best controlled by a combination of written policy and technology. An organization's policies on use of IM in the workplace should be an integral part of the overall computing and network use policies, and should be published and communicated at least annually. In addition to written policy, organizations should implement "gateways" or IM security products to monitor content of inbound and outbound messages. Products from IM security providers (See section on IM security) typically allow administrators to set alerts and enforce policy (i.e. allow or block messages) based on keywords and regular expressions within instant messages. Employees may also misuse IM to communicate on a personal level with friends and family. This is poor use of a business’s time and resources, as the employee’s effectiveness will most certainly decrease due to the added distractions. (Licari, J., May 2005). Businesses often use IM security products to monitor and archive IM conversations for the purpose of minimizing this type of productivity drain. [edit] Security and archiving In the early 2000s, a new class of IT security provider emerged to provide remedies for the risks and liabilities faced by corporations who chose to use IM for business communications. The IM security providers created new products to be installed in corporate networks for the purpose of archiving, content-scanning, and security-scanning IM traffic moving in and out of the corporation. Similar to the e-mail filtering vendors, the IM security providers focus on the risks and liabilities described above. With rapid adoption of IM in the workplace, demand for IM security products began to grow in the mid-2000s. By 2007, the preferred platform for the purchase of security software had become the "appliance", according to IDC, who estimate that by 2008, 80% of network security products will be delivered via an appliance.[9] [edit] User base Note that many of the numbers listed in this section are not directly comparable, and some are speculative. Some instant messaging systems are distributed among many different instances and thus difficult to measure in total (e.g. Jabber). While some numbers are given by the owners of a complete instant messaging system, others are provided by commercial vendors of a part of a distributed system. Some companies may be motivated to inflate their numbers in order to increase advertisement earnings or to attract partners, clients, or customers. Importantly, some numbers are reported as the number of "active" users (without a shared standard of that activity), others indicate total user accounts, while others indicate only the users logged in during an instance of peak usage. Service User count Date/source AIM 53 million active September 2006 >100 million total January 2006 Jabber 40-50 million total January 2007, based on calculations of Jabber Inc 90 million total Based on calculations of Process-One: Process-One uses ejabberd as Jabber server software.
