Building a Pc: Parts list read description.? Hi i'm 13 and i am interested in going into the computer field when I am older. I want to go to college for either two things: Web design or computer repair. I am slightly experienced in web design ( not in any case a master ) I want to be experienced in making a PC. I currently have a Mac. but I want to start Programming on a PC. I know I can build one. I just need a parts list, cost, and were to buy online and in stores. If there are any discount places please tell. And also the total price in american currency. Thanks
What PC parts should I buy and how can you tell if the part "is what it is"/"actually works" by seeing it? What I'm trying to do is go to this consumer electronics show that has all things "electronic/computer" at largely discounted prices. I know some of the stuff is big brand names (Sony.Toshiba, etc.) but I don't know what names are good as far as "PC parts" and the difference between a "TV video card" and a "graphics card", "RAM"(I thought 1gb is the most you can get?), and what works well as far as a DVD/CD burner goes? Here's the ultimate goal: A desktop PC that is connected to my 42"plasma and my Onkyo home theater; for the purpose of having a "media center". A)All my video files(from home movies-music videos-Netflix or some other online video rental, etc.)&plays back MP3s B)Acts as a "Tivo/DVR" that connects to the TV/Stereo in pure digital...The Onkyo receiver actually doesn't have that many "optical inputs"(maybe 2-3) and only about 2-3 HDMI inputs C)I'd also like to "sync" alot of home automation equipment as well (X-10 components) D)An emulator to play all the HD video games.
Starting a PC Upgrade/Repair Business? Hey all, im 18, and i recently got accepted on an Business Admin Apprenticeship, after my apprenticeship i want to become self employed and start my own PC repair and upgrade business, by the end of my apprenticeship i would of had £4000 saved, is this enough to get me started? Or should i find a job to increase the fund? I basicly want to get a little van, buy pc parts on wholesale so i get a discount and upgrade pc's with the components charging higher than i bought them for, hence making a profit. Also repairng pcs for a set price. What sort of things do i need to take into account, such as licenses? Really need advice. Fund amount etc.
Build myself a gaming PC OR Buy HP 390t with $500 discount? Okay, I need help with deciding whether or not I should build a gaming PC or just buy it from HP with good $500 discount. Let me list different parts of my build vs HP build so all you people can help me on which one is better. My build: CPU: Intel Core i7 Extreme 980x, 3.33GHz (Six Core) 12000K CPU Fan: Intel Socket 1366 CPU fan Motherboard: ASUS Rampage III Extreme X58, DDR3, SLI & Cross Fire,SATA3, GB LAN, USB 3.0,iEEE RAM: 12GB (3x4GB) PC3 10600 DDR3 1333 Triple Channel Graphic Card: ATI Radeon HD 5970 2GB PCI Express 16x dual head DVI, HDMI Hard Drive: 1000.0GB Western Digital Green SATA2 UDMA 300 32m cache DVD: LG 22x DVD Recorder Dual Layer +R/RW -R/RW Case: Antec Twelve Hundred Black Case, Full Tower, Side Window, front USB & iEEE Power Supply: Antec TruePower Quattro 1000w Extra Quiet ATX Power Supply SLI & X-fire ready This come out about $3400 with shipping fees and taxes after I use price check with Tigerdirect.com and Newegg.com HP build: CPU: Intel Core i7 Extreme 980x, 3.33GHz (Six Core) 12000K CPU Fan: Intel Socket 1366 CPU fan Motherboard: Pegatron IPMTB-TK http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01901210&tmp_task=prodinfoCategory&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us%E2%8C%A9=en&product=4#N825 RAM: 24GB DDR3-1066MHz SDRAM [6 DIMMs] Graphic Card: 1.8GB NVIDIA Geforce GTX 260 [2 DVI, HDMI and VGA adapters] Hard Drive: FREE UPGRADE! 1.5TB 7200 rpm SATA 3Gb/s hard drive from 1TB DVD: Blu-ray player & Lightscribe SuperMulti DVD burner Network card: Wireless-N LAN card Media Card: 15-in-1 memory card reader, 1 USB, 1394, audio Case: HP case with dimension of 16.85"(L) x 7.05"(W) x 15.79"(H) Power Supply: 460 watts OP: Genuine Windows 7 Professional 64-bit This comes out around $3100 after taxes (free shipping). $2,902.99 before taxes (initial price $3,402.99 before $500 discount) As you can see HP build is cheaper than mine even though I have concerns in a few areas. First of all, their Power Supply is only at 460 watts so if I want to upgrade something in future, it will cost me more with building a new Power Supply. I don't know much about their motherboard so if someone knows about it, please help me explain. Another thing about is I can't get much information about their 1.8GB NVIDIA Geforce GTX 260. I know you can only buy 896 MB GTX 260 outside. I talked with HP live chat agent and he said 1.8GB GTX 260 is only made exclusively for HP 390t and you can't buy it outside. Well, beside these few points, I like HP build. I think my build has better motherboard, Graphic card, and power supply. It's more expensive. HP build has better RAM, more hard drive, better media card readers, and cheaper than my build. So which one should I go with? Thanks in advance for help.
What programs should I put on a new computer? Due to me working at a large computer company, I get a good discount on parts every once in a while so I am putting a fairly decent computer together for my older brother. The problem is, he and his wife arent big computer geeks like I am. Think of them as a couple of years beyond the computer era. I am trying to think of what programs I should put on there that computer iliterate people would like that take advantage of a high end PC. any suggestions?
Is this gaming PC worth $2,448? I need opinions if this PC's parts work with each other well, and if the parts are good or not. I also wanted to know if you think the price for it is worth it. For now, I am just worried about if Dell will put in the right power supply or not, and if the cooling system can handle all this.
How much is my used custom PC worth? I am looking to sell my used custom built PC, but I have no clue what its current value is. I know What parts are going for individually, but have no clue what sort of discount being used gives my machine. Specs: Processor: AMD Athlon II x4 640, 3.00ghz Ram: 2x 4GB crucial DDR3 1333 Windows 7 64bit home premium GPU: XFX Radeon HD 6790 320 GB Western Digital Sata drive with 8mb cache Asus Wireless Card PSU: Thermaltake 430watt Mobo: MSI NF750-G55 Sound: Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Extreme Audio Case: great condition, Antec black with lighted fans.(blue) Also, If I were to part this out, how much do these parts go for used? ie: GPU costs 200 new, how much is it worth used? Thanks!
Tips for building a PC (Help me find a motherboard!)? Ok guys I am working on building my very first PC. I have done some research and my budget is $1,200-$1,300 for the parts, and another $300 for the moniter and Windows 7 (I can get a student discount and get Win 7 for $65) and the moniter I will probably be picking up on craigslist. The computer will be used for moderate computer gaming as well as some light video editing. My main goal is to have it be easily upgradable in the future (hence the huge case). The weakest part of my build is definitely the motherboard, as I am finding it VERY tough to do the correct research on it, so please feel free to let me know if I should take it a different way. Here's what I have so far. Feel free to critique as you see fit. I know that specific RAM can only be used with specific motherboards and specific CPU's with motherboard, etc, so let me know what you think, and if I made a boo-boo somewhere. Any/all recommendations are welcome CPU: AMD Phenom II x4 955 BE - $159.99 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103674 RAM: G.SKILL 2 GB 240-Pin DDR3 1333 x2 - $99.99 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231180 Mobo: MSI 870A-G54 AM3 AMD 870 - $89.99 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130275 GPU: XFX HD-585X-ZAFC Radeon HD 5850 1GB 256-bit - $294.99 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150477 Storage: SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3 HD103SJ 1TB 7200 RPM - $79.99 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822152185&cm_re=samsung_f3-_-22-152-185-_-Product Case: Cooler Master HAF X - $199.99 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119225 PSU: CORSAIR CMPSU-750TX 750W - $109.99 <---does that need to be more watts? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139006 DVD Burner: Some random $20 Sony- $20.99 <---Am I correct in thinking that it really doesn't matter which DVD Burner you get? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827118039 Total: $1054.91 As you can see, I'm about $200 below my budget, which is great news to me! I'm just not sure where to put the extra $$. I could upgrade my GPU to the 5870, or a higher-end CPU, maybe get a SSD to boot my OS from, or even get a liquid-cooling system. I can't decide what to do! What would you upgrade? One of my biggest concerns is that I might have chosen cheap parts, and I don't want that. I tried to find good deals and parts that aren't super expensive, but I don't want to sacrifice quality for price. If I can get a part for $20-$30 more and the quality doubles, I'll do it. Thanks for any help/advice! Oops I made a calculation error, it comes to $1080, which means I have about $150 extra to play with. EDIT: To the poster below: I have 2 2GB cards for $99.99. Are you suggesting I should bump it up to 6? Wouldn't that require a different motherboard? @George H: When looking at the motherboards, I do have some expendable income that I could use to upgrade to the 890, but I am worried I would have to change CPU's or RAM. Is this the case? Or can I easily upgrade from 870 --> 890 and keep everything else the same? I'm looking at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131631 for $139.99 or http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131655 for $174.99

First time PC Builder help with a Windows Operating System? Hi - I have a major problem. So, I decided to build a PC. I have ordered all the parts, they will be delivered on the 5th. Great. I'll build my first PC. Forgot about software - an operating system! D'oh! I am a student, and I have made a budget for my money - I can not afford to spend over £100 for software and I do not want to run the risk of an illegal copy. I heard that students get discounts for Microsoft Office etc... What about Vista? Home basic, home premium, ultimate I dont care aslong as it's cheap and it must be x64 bit. Oh yeah, and because I am building a PC, I need the fully licensed operating system, not one that states UPGRADE! HELP!! 4GB RAM - HD 4670 512MB Graphics
Microsoft Windows 7 / Office 2007 Student Discount for high school? I am considering building a custom PC, and I've heard that Microsoft has a student discount for students with a ".edu" school email address. I'm interested in buying a copy of Windows 7 Home Premium and Office 2007. My high school (TJHSST) gives me a ".edu" email address as part of the school's Intranet. Also, my mom, a teacher, has her own ".edu" address. However, the sites implies that it is for college students only. Is it true? If so, I'll use my sister's college address.
Please review my pc build? PLEASE NOTE: that I am substituting the 580 with the new Radeon 7970 coming out in a few days. I need to trim the fat, I expected this be around 15-1600 dollars. Though I have the funds to purchase this I would like to reduce any unneeded expenses. PC Partpicker says i could be saving 150 dollars by going with different companies for my parts, but I want to keep it all with New Egg. Would I still receive a phone discount if I cancel now? My 2 yr T-Mobile contract has just come to an end. I am now month to month and am not intending to upgrade and receive a discounted phone anytime soon(by way of beginning another 2 yr contract). Even though I am month-to-month, I still have the same high bill. I think that since I am not under contract, I want a less costly alternative....maybe METRO PCS. When I leave my month-to-month with T-Mobile what will be my status if/when I return to them later on? Will I lose the phone "upgrade" option given the fact that I'd parted ways with them? Or, will I be considered a new customer, upon return, and receive a phone discount that way? Thanks! I am just trying to see what needs to be/doesn't need to be done so that I will still qualify for a discounted phone.

How does this PC Build look? Hello. I'm in the market for a new rig (Gonna be using it for high end gaming on Ultra, and Audio/Video Production). I was wondering how this build looks. And I'm also looking for insight on if I should do an SLI or Crossfire configuration. I've been told that unless I plan on running 3 monitors at once, I shouldn't bother. But if I'm gonna be doing high end gaming, and demanding audio/video work with two monitors, would it be worth it to drop cash on an extra card? Also, if you think SLI would be suitable, what cards would you recommend? Right now I have the GTX 560 Ti 448 Core model listed in the parts list below. I am going to build a PC for my friend and I want it to be as cheap as possible on Newegg.? I got all the part picked out and there some good deals... really good deals, but this black November every Friday. I got parts picked out and it totals $438.80, but there is 65$ in rebates. i did the calculations. Without discounts - $463.8 With -25 Instant discounts - $438.80 - about 5% - $25 off With Rebates - $373.8 - 19% from $438.80 - $60 off So do you think I should wait for some better deal come on other Fridays? And also none of these items I have in my cart are black November deals. PS: total amount off is $90.
Why overclock my CPU? I have a bunch of computer parts, as I am an IT guy for a serious group of individuals. So I started selling PC's around last year, and I always have some good stuff. As of 6 months ago, I have been building PC's with high end, 4 thousand dollar configurations. My most prevalent customer, just got a PC from me, with a Core I7 965 Proc, and says to me while I'm building it at his house, that he needed the "unlocked multiplier". Now I know what that is, it makes overclocking much, much easier, but why? Why would I run a 3.2 Ghz Quad Core proc, any higher? What would I notice really? I have the equipment just laying around to try it, but I have never really built a power PC myself. I play Crysis, and Fallout, and UT just fine with a single 9800 GT, and a Phenom. So what would I notice if I could bring a 9770, or a 965 to 4.0, or to 5.0? Would it be worth it? Would I become addicted? (lol) Let me know, best answer get's a 40% discount on a part of their choice, ANY TIME IN THE FUTURE. Just email me, and tell me what you need, and when, I'm not going out of business anytime soon. Thanks in advance.
Is my motherboard dead? ok so im building a pc and ordered a couple of the parts early because there was a discount on them i got the case motherboard and psu and i installed everything correctly and went to go turn it on to make sure all the fans and leds worked but it wouldnt turn on. is my motherboard dead or is it just cause i dont have the ram, processor, etc.
Need help choosing specs for Alienware Desktop? Let me start off by saying, I know I can get the same hardware for a fraction of the price if I order from ibuypower or newegg or w/e, and I know it would be even cheaper if I built one myself. -I actually did order a PC from ibuypower about 6 years agos, it was around 800-1000 dollars and it completely crapped out on me after a month. I have never owned such a buggy piece of hardware in my life, even from the first day plugging it in I ran into problems. - I'm not comfortable building a PC especially one I've spent around $1k for the parts. I don't have access to any kind of tools (not even a f-ing screwdriver lol), and I'm just not interested in all the problems I am sure I will run into. Ok so, Alienware. They might be overpriced, but I know it will be reliable. I'm not trying to get the BEST performance ever. I just want to play mostly MMOs (WoW, Rift, Guild Wars2, etc..) and a couple other games like Diablo3,Starcraft2,LoL, HoN, etc.. One of the main reasons I want to go with Alienware is because I have the ability to get a decent discount on any Dell product. I assume Alienware falls under that since you basically order it from the dell website. I think I want to go with the cheaper option, because like I said I'm not really going for the BEST performance possible. But I think its probably a good idea to upgrade a couple things instead of just buying it stock. If you look at this website: http://www.alienware.com/Landings/desktops.aspx , choose the first one (Aurora) and you get to go through all the customization options. I was thinking I should probably upgrade the Graphics Card, the proccessor, possibly the RAM, and w/e else you guys think. Just remember I'm not trying to spend a whole lot of money, I just want something that will have no problem running the games I mentioned. *** To hear that this would be a little overkill is actually what I'm going for. My taste in games spans a lot of genres and my attention span or lack of it forces me to try new games all the time. If this machine is overkill for the games I stated, it means it should be able to handle almost anything for a couple years right? I think if I went with the XPS I would be selling myself a little short. I'm not neccesarily just a casual gamer so I'm happy to hear that the alienware is infact a pretty powerful machine. can some one just redo this for me? Advantages/disadvantages Of Buying/building Lucas Norton PC’s Advantages The best advantage to building a computer from scratch is the selection of parts. This is due to the fact that the manufacturers can buy in bulk for steep discounts that turn into savings on the computer. By building a computer from components, the buyer is able to choose the parts that best match the computer they desire. Another thing that buyers may not be aware of with pre-built computers is that two of the exact same model computer can actually have very different parts. The reason for this has to do with suppliers, parts available at the time the system was built. Buying all the parts on your own guarantees what parts you will get in your PC. Disadvantages The biggest disadvantage with building a computer is the lack of any one support you will be dealing with. Since each component can and likely will come from a different store and/or means that if a part has a problem, you will have to deal with the right company. The second biggest disadvantage with buying a computer system is cost. In most cases, the cost of building a computer will be slightly less expensive than purchasing a pre-built computer (due to what kind of parts and things you would like). They also include software with the systems that must be purchased separately when building a system. Some stores do allow you to customize a computer system, but you are still limited to their selection of parts And this tells me how I think you should build a computer over buying one. long story short the person im doing this for cannot write this and asked me to and i cannot do these very well it is NOT cheating whatsoever FYI i ment redo the presentation i dont want to make any big mistakes is what i meen
Will a computer game downloaded online (legally) work better then the same game on a CD? i ask this because there is a discount for KOTOR download on dircet2drive.com. i had the game on xbox, then my 360 broke. then i had it on cd as a part of the Starwars best of pc pack which i got from a friend, and it lagged horribly to the point where i couldn't get the very first mission started. so, will this download work better with the disk or should i not waste my money. (i am not asking for opions about the game, even though they will all probably good, i just want to know if it will work better)

I also of course want the battery to be pretty decent(at least 3 to 4 hours). The 14" screen would be nice, but I think I can get used to the 15" Asus just as well. I've heard the fans can get VERY loud on the m14x which could be a bit of a nuisance, since the Asus has seemingly no noise(or so I hear). Please let me know what you recommend based on not only the specs, but also on build quality and overall dependability of each product in your unbiased(if that's even possible) opinion. Thanks!!
Anybody edit video for a living? Is the Mac hype really justified? I'm about to graduate college this coming summer with a bachelor of arts in communication. My dream job would be to be part of a production crew and be a video editor. I have experience in video editing but it is all PC based. I have used Macs a lot at school everyone there seems to preach the Mac is best for media idea. Anyone have any experience or suggestions how to go about becoming an editor I know experience is key, next semester I will start learning final cut pro. I would like become fluent in it. I'm sort of considering buying a Mac but even with the student discount they are expensive. I'm a PC guy although I do like Macs I'm only considering buying one for final cut pro. Appreciate any input
economic order quantity? can someone help me with this question i am quite confuse on how to solve this. A company buys citrus in can from growers with a minimum purchase of 100 cans. A can cost $9.9 and the carrying cost is 10% of the cost while the ordering cost is $10. The growers decided to give discounts. If the company buys 200 cans, they'll give away 10 additional cans free plus a chance to win a $3000 worth of computer. The chance of them winning is 1/1000. If the company buys 300 cans, they'll give way 30 additional cans for free plus they also be part of the drawing for PC. If the company buys 400 cans, they'll give away 40 additional cans for free plus the company will be part of the drawing for the PC and also be part of the a raffle for trip worth $800. The chance of them winning the raffle for the trip is 1/800. What should the company do?

i need help getting some information for my business!? Ok, I'm 19 yrs old, in the SC Army National Guard for the next 5 years (been in for 1), got a $72,000 college scholarship from them + a $20,000 sign-on bonus coming soon. Im unemployed and not going to college yet. I have been working to get my computer company started for a veeery long time now and now we have finally kicked off. My competition isnt cyberpowerpc or ibuypower or any of those big name dealers because im mostly just local. Im not looking to go nationwide anytime soon as that would prolly end my life just trying to think about how i would do that at this point haha. I order parts from various websites-mostly newegg.com-and assemble them into a gaming computer that i give a name..like the black knight gaming pc...similar to how other companies like ibuypower has the battalion laptops and palidan desktops. I sell entry to highend pc's. but my problem is that i cant get my prices low. My entry level pc's are forced to be priced at $800+ b/c i cant find parts cheap enough to lower the price. im already on the verge of extinction b/c my pcs arent selling quite as well as i had hoped for. most website sell mid-range gaming pc's for about $50-$75 cheaper than my lower end ones on average. what can i do to find lower prices on parts. Oh, and i also have my own company logo that i put on my computer cases to show that its one assembled by my company which is a cool addition i think. doesnt cost so much either. i've been working on a website 24/7 for the past week and am probably about halfway done. are there any sites out there that i can order from for cheap?? Newegg.com is my primary source right now, so could yall plz help me find cheap prices based off of that? and what can you recommend i do about bulk items..how do i go about ordering in bulk to get big discounts? i havent figured that one out yet. also my company isn't copyrighted yet. im scared that might cost a butt load, so i need help with that too. haha. i know im a newb at this business stuff lol thats why im starting a business course at Devry in charlotte in january. but i wanted to go ahead and get a head start with my company so that when i am ready to go full-scale computer sales ill at least have something steady to start with. i have my own line of pc series with themed gaming pc setups within them. im working on getting my company out there on ebay right now so that i will have a very simple online market. hmmm...thats really all the cents i can put into it at this point. i may have a stroke before too long lol. thanks soo much for the answers and plz dont be shy to critisize, comment, judge, or correct anything i have said =] i forgot to mention i am veeery knowledgeble in computer technology. my only problem is getting my product on the shelves at a cheaper price to attract customers

Why are there so many Mac haters? So many people I know "hate" me for having a Macbook pro. They say it is too expensive, and it is not powerful. I completely disagree. I have a 13" i5 2011 Macbook Pro. As a college student, I got a $100 discount off the laptop, and $100 to spend on the Mac app store, so the laptop as a whole was really only $1000. And I made the money myself, mind you. Didn't take long at all. Now, onto the laptop itself. First of all, it is compact. It is so easy to carry around to classes, and adds almost no weight to my backpack, while those PC laptop users who berate me carry around these 17", heavy, clunky things that need to be carried in a separate bag. Then, those PC users brag about how Mac laptops suck at gaming, while I spot them every now and then playing games like Civ 5 at 10 fps on their supposedly "cheap but powerful" laptops. First of all, they seem to always forget about bootcamp and often refuse to acknowledge its existence. Second, my i5 Macbook Pro (which, again, with the discounts was only ~$1000), however, runs Wow high settings 60 fps, Starcraft 2 high settings 60-80 fps, ESIV: Oblivion highest settings/better graphics texture pack installed at 60fps, Deus Ex: HR pretty well, Crysis 2 at low settings (but fairly high res) with no lag, and Minecraft 2 at highest everything without lag for the most part. Now, when I asked a while back what laptop I should buy, multiple people pointed me to a $975 laptop that had the same specs as my Macbook Pro, except the $975 laptop was heavy, clunky, and ugly. So, I of course went with the Macbook Pro. As for the Mac OSX vs Windows 7, I prefer Mac OSX, and I do not enjoy switching over to Windows 7 bootcamp partition for gaming. OSX just feels so natural and convenient, and I have never had any glitches, problems, viruses, etc. However, when I use Windows 7, I often have problems with viruses from .exe files, and I find it stupid that one has to spend so much money to add extra security to Windows 7, when one could instead use Mac OSX. So, why do so many people hate Macs? Just from personal experience (not influenced by others), I find Macs/Mac OSX to be better built and superior in general to PC laptops and Windows 7.
How to check for hard-drive compatibility with other components? I'm building a new mid-range computer using several new parts and a few old parts that still aren't too bad. I know that everything is compatible (other than the hard-drive which I am not sure about), but I do not know if the motherboard will fit in my case or if my hard-drive is compatible with my new parts. For the motherboard fitting issue, my case's dimensions are 16.61" x 15.51" x 7.00" (It isn't very big) and I am planning on using it with: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233132 (2 of these) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128523 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115072 (May buy an aftermarket cooler for overclocking if I need a bit more out of my PC) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121425 I know my hard-drive is acceptable considering that, by my somewhat limited understanding of hard-drives, don't do a great deal for games other than reducing loading times (750 GB, 7200 RPM, 3.0 Gb/s) but I do not know where to find the specific model so I can check if it is compatible with my new parts. The link to my original computer is here if it helps: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883107877 tl;dr Need to know if all parts are compatible and if the motherboard will fit in my case. Suggestions are welcome, I am very young (15) and I am trying to learn what I can about hardware and software. Note that I have already ordered the video card because it was hugely discounted when I bought it and my power supply is more than adequate for any non-GPU upgrades. So if I have an OEM HDD I will have to buy a new OS and HDD ontop of what I am currently buying? I don't know too much about HDDs if anyone wants to recommend one for me.
Dell Studio 15 or White Macbook?? HELP PLEASE!? Ok, here's the deal. I am a college student and I really want a macbook. The mac that I want costs approximately $1000 with my student discount and the dell costs approximately $730. I am capable of saving up the money for the mac but I really want to know what I'm paying for. I'm a working college student so obviously I don't have money to waste. Gives me some pros and cons about mac vs. dell/windows. Also take into consideration that the price of the dell includes microsoft office (which as i student i can't live without). Also note that the dell is equipped with 3GB of memory and 250GB hard drive compared to 2GB of memory and 120 GB hard drive on the mac What can I do on a mac that i can't on a pc? Is there any way to make decent money building computers? I have built a few and sold a couple in the past. I am pretty sure I could sell them on ebay for a low price but I might not even break even. The OS "operating system" is the problem. Windows 7, Vista, Xp is anywhere from 90-300+ dollars. I don't understand how businesses sell desktop pc's for so cheap. I can build one with better performance, reliability, parts and warranties but still the OS brings the price over the top. Does anyone here have any tips? bulk/seller discounts I think the people buying them for cheaper with crappy parts and the junky expensive warranty are the ones getting duped. They are getting completely duped when getting a computer without the OS disc though. I know some people sell them on ebay with Ubuntu or no OS installed, but I don't see how. How could you even stress test each build. Come on, there's gotta be a way.
I need some sound specifics regarding a phone interview. Never had one. Very.. rusty interviewing.. See Below? I have a phone interview tomorrow. I never had one before. Its with a high end fashion company. I seriously.. want to ace this. I have been out of work a long while ..due to the fact I have been helping care for my mother who has cancer. She is now stable. The woman liked my resume.. and I have extensive customer service and retail sales background. She also... liked the fact I emailed her back fast... I assume because this is part of the customer service experience that customers seek. Okay.. please go easy on me.. since I am super rusty. I am not saying I will tell the interview this..I am asking what is and not okay and asking what I should and should not say. I don't want to say too much or too little that I look over anxious or boring. I need to be able to stand out. I am in my late forties.. and many of the people going for this position may be a lot younger and hipper. I don't at this moment .. have the hip clothes.. that I did see the women who work there wearing on line. The ones that I will be working with. I live in the Mid West.. they have offices in NY. Not.. sure where this office was that I seen them dress all trendy at. But the clothes there are super expensive . I can sell myself with confidence on my skills that I do have for this jobs. I do fall short in the computer knowledge area. I did look up the job description and I will have it in front of me inc case. I also researched the company and will have that information handy as well. I want to be prepared. But.. need to stand out.. amongst the others.. even the younger hiree potentials. If ... I do well.. I will most likely be called in for a one on one in person interview. What questions can I ask them over the phone? When I meet in person and am offered the job.. I suppose that may be the time to ask about benefits , advancement opportunities to grow with the company etc. But.. over the phone.. I am trying to get the second interview. The job description says something about knowing Microsoft Suite. I don't have this. I have typed letters in MS Word. I do know the basics. I have my own PC at home. I have done some data entry in the distant past..working on one screen. I am great with people and over the phone. I have a good professional phone voice. I am creative. However... because of my finances...lack of... I have not had the money to spend on cloths. I don't have trendy clothes. I may be asked about my taste or flare or passion for clothes.. how do I get around this? I don't want to say negative things or raise a red flag. I will have to pull off something to wear for the interview and accessorize for awhile to get a few pay checks to shop. I don't know.. what the dress code is... Or.. if they give you a discount and expect you to shop there. They are very.... high end and its seriously.. expensive. Yet.. I don't want to be not chosen if I asked if I have to shop there...lol. I wouldn't say that. Also... do I mention..that if my mother has to go in to see her doctor would they work around this or with me.. Or.. do I wait until hired ? She may need a few surgeries.. But.. I have to work and this is a golden opportunity for me. The pay is Excellent and high and there is a lot of room for working in other areas in higher positions and training.. Maybe even travel. They offer complete benefit packages and full time hours. Please.. help me know what to say and how to say it. They want to see motivation.. which I have and innovation. I can dress the part.. I just need to know what to say and how to pull this off until I can do this .. and not be disqualified based on that. Thanks
Soon-To-Be Communications Major, What Laptop Should I Get? I am going to be a freshman in college this upcoming fall and I literally just figured out that I want to major in communications (ie journalism, broadcasting, photojournalism, marketing, etc.). Being a communications major, I was wondering what laptop I should get. I'm really leaning towards the MacBook Pro 13" (I'm going to use the educations discount to get $100 off and a $100 rebate for a printer), but I'm not 100% sure. I've been a PC user all my life, but the whole "boot camp" thing where I can get Windows AND OS X, virtually no viruses (I know this is a long shot, but studies show that Macs DO get less viruses), money off AND a free printer are really starting to bring me towards Mac. Also, keep in mind that I have been looking at a Dell and it is about the same price as the MacBook Pro, so money is not a part of this. I would just like to know if you believe that a Mac would be a good decision for a communications major or if a PC may be better, Please and thank you! :)
How can I convince my mom to let me buy a laptop? I really want to buy the new white MacBook. With an education discount and preinstalled iWork, it will be around $990. I wrote out a plan to show my mom that I will have her buy it now but I will pay her back an amount each month to completely buy the laptop myself. (Kind of like a mortgage/installment plan.) My mom says a laptop is unnecessary but I can truthfully say that I am mature and responsible for my age. I am turning 15 in a month and a half and I really want a laptop. Our current desktop (family computer) is a PC and a lot of things mess up on it constantly (me, my brother, and (sometimes) my mom uses it). I'd rather have my own laptop because I will have complete control on it- meaning my brother can't download things constantly and have spyware and Trojans let in. I also want to use it for schoolwork and for media (I'm a big photo/video girl, and Macs are great for that). This is the cheapest MacBook, but still has everything I want as far as memory, features, etc. All of my friends have their own laptops/computers but as my mom pointed out- all of them have either two full-time working parents, or two full-time working divorced parents (where the other parent chips in toward the cost). My mom is widowed and works part-time so we have no other income. At the moment my mom has been thinking of investing in a new TV or car and such and if she has the money to buy that right now, I don't see why she can't shell out a thousand for me to pay back later. Please help me try and convince her! I am being mature and calm while talking to her- and not whining or bringing up "Everybody has one!" Thanks in advance. I forgot to mention that I am a good kid- I get straight As and do my chores. My mom won't get it as a present because she normally spends $200-300 on birthday.

How to install Windows 7 Ultimate on Macbook Pro (2011)? As part of my college program, I got a discounted Windows 7 Ultimate online from my college website. The instructions were simple: download from site, and then burn to a dvd. I did this, however whenever I use boot camp, it says it cannot be found (the dvd). I was told to burn it on a windows pc, and then use on the mac, but that didnt work. I tried burning it on the mac itsself, and that doesnt work either! How do I install windows?????

I don't feel right dumping another 100 dollars to get the GTX 570 because in all tests I have only seen a 5 FPS improvement.

Local bike shop vs Online retailer? I buy (or at least give my LBS the first shot) most of my bike parts from my LBS, however some online deals are just too good to give up. btw im in Canada which seems to be an economic term for overcharge. For example my LBS is willing to order me a parktools PCS-4-1 bike stand for $475 +tax = $536.75 I can order it from JensonUSA have here tomorrow with all tax/freight/duty paid for $323 CAD. I am a small business owner myself so I understand the need to support small business, but a $200 dollar difference is alot. Also when I went to order my frame from said LBS the guy had a new 18" 29 frame on sale so now I have two bikes to build. I think this guy will be getting enough of my money. So my question is do i suckit up for the sake of loyalty and possible future discounts or go for the quick deal?
Will a computer game downloaded online (legally) work better then the same game on a CD? i ask this because there is a discount for KOTOR download on dircet2drive.com. i had the game on xbox, then my 360 broke. then i had it on cd as a part of the Starwars best of pc pack which i got from a friend, and it lagged horribly to the point where i couldn't get the very first mission started. so, will this download work better with the disk or should i not waste my money. (i am not asking for opions about the game, even though they will all probably good, i just want to know if it will work better) I think i might try to find the old cd again, see if that works, i am due to get a new computer soon so i can wait.

Mine looked brand spanking new. Very fast, the battery does last only 1 1/2 hours, but I got an extra battery for $65 on eBay used and it works nicely. Came with Vista, but I put WinXP on mine and found all the drivers on the internet. The construction is very sturdy hard plastic, none of the cheap flimsy stuff. Overall the value is great, it feels and looks more durable than laptops of the past, and is fast. Great buy. REVIEW BY: Rick M. Reviewed Aug 07, 2008 I bought this laptop a week ago.and received it Wednesday. Excellent condition, I would have thougt I just picked it up at a store. My only problem was when I allowed Norton Internet Security to load (60 day trial)and then brought up the internet, half way through loading, the system locked up. The only way to free it up was to manualy power down. I unistalled Norton and installed AVG Free. NO more problems !!!! This is a very fast easy to use laptop with all the bells and whistles. Also very fast shipping,3 days. VERY HAPPY REVIEW BY: fraqtured Reviewed Aug 06, 2008 i bought the T1625 which is essentially the same specs as this, and wanted to input the impression i drew from the t1625. first off, great price, amazing features, and with a laptop cooler running $40 dollars for a middle of the road model, this laptop will run cool [the only complaint i have found on these was the heat] and you will have picked yourself up a top with features running in some cases nearly twice as much in price of a non refurbs, which will only be the refurbs of tomorrow. run all the updates through gateway, and do a clean reinstall and pertition reformat when you unpack, it, it will take a little bit of time, but will point you in a much faster direction. this laptop is highly recomended in my opinion. REVIEW BY: Reviewed Aug 05, 2008 This is my first purchase from TD.com, and I'm very satisfied with it. The Turion 64 dualcore processor and the 2GB of RAM make short work of everything I throw at it; I have Pidgin (my IM client), Firefox (with 3 tabs open, including YouTube), LimeWire, and uTorrent all running at the same time and there is absolutely no slowdown whatsoever. My only gripes are that it gets a little bit hot when charging, and the battery only lasts for an hour and a half; I can deal with heat and the battery can be easily upgraded. The only thing you have to worry about with refurbished products is the look, not performance; Mine came with a small scratch in the top of the case, but performs like a champ. If you don't mind some minor cosmetic flaws, I'd definitely recommend this computer to anyone on a budget, especially at this price! Your computer uses memory to run your Operating System, applications, peripherals, and to generate and display graphics on your computer monitor. Video memory is a form of RAM, and is either built into your motherboard; or on a graphics card (video card). Depending on the motherboard's configuration, and that of the video card (if separate or built-in to the motherboard), your computer may have to draw on its own RAM memory to meet its video memory needs. This creates shared memory, where your computer’s RAM will be shared between its own Processor (CPU) and its graphics chip. The result is that some systems will have shared memory, some will not. If you have 2GB (for example) of system memory installed, you may notice that your system reports significantly less memory. This is because your system is using shared memory for your video. What can you do about this? You can actually configure this shared memory through your computer’s BIOS settings. However, this is a setting best left alone, since it is typically optimized for display performance, and making changes may impact display resolutions, and other video capabilities. The simplest solution is usually to either: increase your system memory; or to upgrade the video hardware. By upgrading to a new video card with built-in video memory, then turning off shared memory, you will free your system to use it's maximum potential memory, and provide your system with much more robust video features. Click Here for our Memory Options » Click Here for the latest Video Cards » How Much Memory Do You Really Have? When you look at the specifications for a computer, it will display the installed memory, and typically the maximum memory that can be installed. However, while these are real values, they represent a potential useable memory. The actual useable memory may be different from these values. The reason is simply that a computer may configured to use shared memory, which reduces the amount of RAM that is available to the CPU by using some of it for other purposes, such as for video memory. In some cases, you can control the maximum useable memory through system settings, and by upgrading to a video card that has internal onboard video memory. But always remember, that the amount of memory that your system reports, is not always the amount of actual installed memory. If you find that you need more memory, we suggest expanding your system memory, since this is the most effective performance increase, and the one that is easiest to perform . From our perspective, this was not a holiday, but a very stressful horrible never ever experienced with Ming Ming Travel Service. 1st day in Beijing already spoilt our mood as Beijing is Capital of CHINA Early morning, 22 of us including our group leader have arrived in Beijing Airport and wasted waiting 1 hour for the China tour guide to pick up. Meal – Lunch and Dinner •Lunch arrangement was terrible, 2 tables joined together for 10 person like sitting in hawker centre! Due to no seats arranged for us because the booking was 1.30 pm and we arrived at 11.30 am. Our tour guide shouting and argument between and the Restaurant’s Captain & stuff. Both parties were very unhappy each other. Half an hour has gone we managed to get the joined tables like coffee shop. 15 minutes later the white rice came without foods, Another 15 minutes, and junk foods arrived. Our two tables received the very bad manner service from the fierce waitress, because our tour guide has scolded them. This is the first day of the CNY meals what we have is no luck and all the CNY moods were spoiled. Bad starting, bad ending. •Most of the food served was un-delicious & neat (e.g. soup served – water + salt only + eggs only) •Food served is insufficient for 10pax in a table – no additional food ordered. •Some of the hotel breakfast, drinks like coffee, tea and water are not included. Need to pay at our own costs. •The last day dinner BBQ Stream Boat was very cheap foods. WHITE RICE, TOW HOO, TAN HOON, MIX - VEGETABLES & COOKING OIL. •Early morning 4 am before going to Airport breakfast was packed in the paper box contains 1 pc of hard rock bun, butter & EXPIRED DATE MILK PACKED DRINKS. Accommodation – Hotel in Beijing with 5 Star rating (Hai Ge International Hotel) •Very dirty (carpet & towel) and uncomfortable – first time we stayed in such “5 star” hotel. What kind of rating is that? •Door cannot be locked. •Toilet unclean, floor got curly hair (from human bottom part.) •Chengde Hotel shower and water tap were very very brownish rusty and not safe to drink. •Toilet door got very big hole and cannot locked. •One of our group visitor said the toilet wall almost collapse. •Hotel carpet with smoking ashes and cigarette’s filter never sweep off. •Room contain of heavy smoked-cigarette smell. Happy Valley Theme Park - 12 Feb 2008 •Morning call (6.30am) everybody woke up so early – after breakfast, reached Theme Park at 8.30am, waited until 9.30am (business hour opens during holidays) The winter was below ( - 8 Degree C) we were all standing for 1 hour suffering cold wind outside the gate for nothing. After we went in - all the amusement games or show actually started from 10am, 10.30am, 11am, 12pm, etc…. the best show is at evening & night time. Tour guide only given us time frame till 12pm noon only. We missed all the carnival shows & other games as time given is so limited! Shopping in China •After lunch, we were asked to go their special arrangement for tourists’ price Slaughter Shopping Complex. Price ranging from RMB 5,000.00 down to RMB 200.00. Feel pity for the new customers who don’t know how to ask for the big discount. •Fake Rolex watch after discount is RMB 10.00 + only. •Mostly electronic items are very cheap but cannot last a week. •8 GB Kingston Pan Drive and 32 & 400 GB Sony Pan Drive at RM100.00 each when turn on it cannot be use. Cheater China man. •Never ever buy the ready packed Beijing Duck, it taste like newspaper. Do you want to eat newspaper? •Beijing have 1,600 million population and Kuching have ½ million population. We have pay extra of RMB 60 each person the tour guide brought us the same Slaughter Tourist Shopping Complex. Ask why we came to the same Shopping Complex and she replied there are no more other shopping Complex in Beijing. Do you believe? Hot Spring 九华山庄温泉度假村 •In Kuching Ming Ming Travel never advice us to bring along swimming suit for hot spring. •Actually Hot Spring resorts have lot things to discover but we reached the resort at 8.30pm, at this time not much thing we can do since all of them are closing. •Should given us 1 full day instead of bring us to Slaughter Tourist Shopping Complex. Ski - 11 Feb 2008 •Ski Rate – Max rate (in CNY) is RMB160 for 2 hours / pax, but tour guide collects RMB200 for 2 hours / pax from us. (As shown in their booklet at the end of tour) Some of the games are free of charged but the tour guide never wants to tell us. •Ski resort not only just for skiing, we discovered from the booklet there is still lots of activities that is suitable for everyone free of charged. But tour guide just replied “ I dun even know about that” •By right should give us 6 hours enjoying skiing instead of 2 hours. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ Money Minded $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ •Upon arriving in China just entering the bus about 10 minutes, the first itineraries haven’t started yet. We were all shocked. She asked us to pay extra RMP250.00 / pax x 20 pax = RMP 5,000.00 for the kung fu show. There were only 4 persons agreed to go and her face turned angry and compliant to our Kuching guide that she never bring this type of lousy group before. •On 10 Feb 2008 we went to Cheng De from Beijing, distance about 180km one way, and Driver fuels the gas tank at RMB600 only. I THINK YOU know how to CACULATE the fuel usage right!!! •Tour guide told us earlier that we will reach at Beijing after 3pm on 11 Feb 2008, but on that day we reached Beijing only about 1.30 pm, telling us no place to visit anymore since we have visited all the location as per itinerary!! She requested us to pay additional RMB60/pax so total RMB1260 for Transport & Parking fee(Tour Bus) to go 3 Tourist Shopping Center (i.e Yue Shui, Xiu Shui, Ya Xiu) [we had no choice but to pay, if not we will only be staying at hotel. •The China Tour guide make money on both sides. After received RMB1,260 from us in her pocket then she went to Slaughter Tourist Shopping Complex counter to claim that she brings in 21 visitors believed RMB 20.00 = extra income of RMB 420.00 + RM 1260 Total RMB 1680.00 •The take over job at Chengde lady tour guide was worse still. She brought us in a Temple and told us to put our hand together and follow their Chinese speaking prayer in-front of their TA LA MA LA (A kind of Buddhist God) then donate RHB 300.00 to the Temple. At that moment, a few of us were Christian. So we walked out the Temple, then tour guide looked at us very fierce and treated us as her enemy. •The next visit is The Imperial Mountain Resort Chengde she introduced the Anti-ants product at RMB 50 / packet, all of us bought it, some even bought more packets and came back the product not working. CHEATED •At 4 pm, she planned late time to send us to Mountain Resort and pointed out at least 30 interested areas to visit. She told if we walk on foot it might took whole day and time was short, coming dark evening and very cold (-18). She forced us to use a mini truck costs us RMB 50 x 21 pax = RMB1,050. The distance took less than 15 minutes to complete 2 interesting areas only and forget the 28 interested areas. China Public toilets •Most of the out door tourist public toilets were very very damn dirty. Some lady toilets don’t even have a door. It only covers by 2 feet height cloth. Your friends, relatives and others pass-by can see you pissing, so embarrass. The pissing area was only 6” height small long joint drain like our outdoor house drain. It contains many days shit & urine without water flushing away. Heavy smelly pissing & shit can make you vomit immediately. For sure I cannot finish eating KFC when I think about it. China our Guide – •Should intro the special dish arranged to us as stated in the itinerary list. •Is not professional enough to intro other activities when we arrived destination – Nan Shan Ski Mountain and etc. •Sounds impatient • We did complaint to both party but no use, turn back scolded by group leader. •More than 10 of us in our group have been to Beijing experience, some even went 4 times. To be frank, we have joined so many tours but never experienced such a lousy trip by Ming Ming Travel. •We don’t mind to pay additional fares but we should be treated with good services. It seems like not worth to pay for what we entitled. group leader •China tour guide seldom hold tour flat and lead in front walking very fast and seldom look back. One of our groups disappears for almost 2 hours missing without hand phone contact. Al last, she was frighten found. •When in China, our Kuching group leader turned to mute. Never lead and asking for our interest. This was our worse trip we ever have. We have made the compliant to Ming Ming Travel at the end, they just ignore it. We are making the details of this case know to Travel watchdog who have expressed a willingness publish the details in the hope that it will warn other travelers of your absolute lack of respect for your customers. Plan for China vacation? No way, My strong command is, try to travel other country but definitely not China, or else, you will get cheated by the China tourist guide to send you to buy expensive items like Chinese Medicines, Silk, Pearls, Jewelleries, Gold, Jade, expensive Tea and other hidden etc………Tours fare is cheap RM 2 to 3 thousand depend on the peak time. Hidden buying expensive items can be end up from RM 2 to 10 thousand and above. If you have the light ears and soft heart please, don’t get cheated by Money minded China – man by forced. SA4 tire vs. Primewell PS850? Which is better? After shopping around on a low budget, I have narrow my chose to only two tires, the SA4 from Discount Tire and Primewell PS850 from Firestone, both for $43 each, 205/75-15. They're basic tires, nothing special. Both are 3-ply tread, 1-ply sidewall, 35 psi, with 40K warranty. Of course they're nothing compare to Michelin or Bridgestone. I'm planning to buy the tires only. The biggest different is where it was manufactured. SA4 is made in USA by Kelly Springfield Tire Co. said Discount Tire. But the Primewell is made by GITI, China largest tire company. SA4 tire: http://www.discounttire.com/dtcs/tires/sa4/size/viewProductDetail.do?pc=15845 Primewell PS850: http://www.gititire.com/tiredetails.asp?from=pcr&mastertireid=ChinaPattern000100&size=&profile=&rim=®ion=2&brand=2 Are made in USA always better than made in China even if both are the same price? Also, based on the look of the treads, which would perform better overall? What is your opinion on the two? I know tires are the only part that touch the road but I'm on a tight budget and cheap tires are better than bald tires. They're going on a 1995 Nissan Quest if that's important. City, Highway mix in Dallas Texas.
