Some Questions About the Mechanics of Computer Hardware Components? I hope someone (maybe even a hardware tech-savy) can provide me with some insightful answers and clarify some possible misconceptions I may have regarding the hardware components within a computer. Firstly, I think I remember from somewhere that the Hard drive in a computer is the only moving part, which consequently subjects it to more potential damage and shorter lifespan than any other component. If it is true that its the only moving part and everything else is virtual, how does a computer work? Secondly, I was wondering what the Ghz, or in some cases Mhz value of the CPU meant. I understand its commonly used to measure the speed of a processor, and for processors of the same family and architecture be used to determine the faster of the two processors by observing the Ghz value. But what does the Ghz value really mean? Upon simple google searching, the only thing I could extract other than what I already know is that the, CPU measures the speed of the processor through how many instructions it can perform within one second. (I thought Ghz was a measure of frequency, and thus a measure of how fast the CPU spins) However if that is the case, wouldn't it not matter what model or architecture the CPU is, you could for example compare an AMD processor to an Intel processor just by how many instructions the two CPUs can perform, and conclude for certain which one would be faster (ignoring the existence of multi-core processors in order to retain the simplicity of the original question) Also, what would be used to be the standard instruction to measure the Ghz Value? Perhaps someone who had the chance, money, and experience to work with many hardware components can help clarify for me these questions. Thanks! Thanks for the response Marv! However I understood all of that already, its just some conflicts in my understanding of computers have forced me to try to resolve them by adding up these information by myself. I know that Ghz is Gigahertz and means 1 billion cycles per second (frequency, which in physics can be waves, or oscillations). But literally and strictly speaking what does the Ghz or Mhz mean? What is going on in there? Just like for Length, 7 meters, or 700 centimeters measures the distance/length of something, what does it mean for a CPU to be crunching out numbers at 3.2 Ghz? You helped me by saying its not spinning, but then what is that "something "its doing at 3.2 Ghz? Also sorry, I didn't mean CPU is virtual, I meant that the processes that's going on is VIRTUAL, I know the chips are are indeed ACTUAL, but I brought that up in order to mention that they don't move relative to the harddrive which actually does move, and yes haha that's right, the fans do move.

Why am I getting Low Frames Per Second for Gaming despite Upgrading Computer Hardware Components? Hopefully someone with the expertise can analyse my set-up! I play FPS Source games (DOD/CS) on a HP Media Center 7350 It is a PentiumD 920 (P) DC 2.8 GHz, and a few months ago I upgraded it to Vista 32-bit, adding RAM which now totals 3Gb. The PSU is a Bestec 300W Max. Output The motherboard is a ASUS P5LP-LE with one PCIe x16 slot and I upgraded my graphics card with a Nvidia GeForce 7600GT DX.9. I have downloaded all latest drivers. When I play FPS Source games, I get low FPS 10-30 when I set up monitor resolution to maximum 1920 x 1200. Only when I reduce the resolution and turn off extras in-game like HDR and low texture/models that i will get between 30-40 FPS. I was hoping with all my additions, I would be able to enjoy my gaming at higher graphic capabilities. I have also tried turning off Vista Aero to improve performance. Is this a PSU issue? Or will upgrading to 8/9 series DX.10 graphics card make an improvement? Help will be most appreciated! Thank you!
