I need a suggestion if I buy more computer memory or buy a new computer soon? I have an old computer: Dell Dimension 4600 with Windows XP Home Edition version 2002 service pack 3 with Pentium 4 2.66 GHz and 896 MB of RAM and since this computer suddenly can run very slowly several times every day to the point I need to re-started it a few times a day I wasn't sure if a memory upgrade would help and also I plan to purchase a new computer in the next few years. I researched on-line and in different sites I've got different information on this Dell computer that it can't use more than 1 GB of memory and in another site I found the maximum is 4GB of memory and now I am not sure if this computer and Windows XP could handle to use 4GB of memory, have a better performance and if is really worth to upgrade the computer memory for this computer now or is better to wait till I get a new computer. I ran other hardware tests myself with this computer and always the problem is low computer memory. I did checked the start up processes, they are the minimum amount I need and I ran other tests too that concludes the memory is too low.
Issues with computer performance, FPS? Hello there, Im currently having issues with my computer. Specifically issues with my FPS in games, The game Im most eager to get higher FPS in would be World of Warcraft. My problem is that my FPS will stick around the 15-29fps range, randomly changing and just general freezing / lag. It doesnt matter what graphics settings I set, wether it be Anti-Aliasingx8 or x1, full shadow detail or low. It will still remain in this range, even when playing the game solo. For my computer specs, I would expect the game to run much smoother than it does at the moment. Some of my friends can run the game at 60~ fps constantly. There has to be something bottlenecking my system, albeit hardware or software that is causing this to be so low. I have run a 3DMARK06 test, here are the results: http://service.futuremark.com/home.action;jsessionid=2F287A38E6D24D4AB6C0B65DA214FC58 Worryingly it seems that it has ranked me bottom when my system was compared with 6 similar systems. My system specifications are as followed: OCZ DDR2 8GB RAM (2x 4GB) Intel Q6600 Quadcore @ 2.4ghz Ati HD 4870x2 (dualcore, not two 4870's) ASUS P5N-E SLI motherboard 1000w corsair PSU Windows XP professional SP2 I was thinking that perhaps the bottleneck in my system would be the motherboard, perhaps it can't handle both the quadcore and the 4870x2? What do you think, What do you suggest I do in order to boost performance. wow, thank you for the speedy replies. I will try the things suggested and come back with the results. btw, the version of windows is 64bit ;)
I need a free performance testing program.? I need a free program for Windows that will check the performance of a computer, to help me pinpoint the cause of a computer running slower than it should be. Sort of like a benchmark program, only I don't need the fine precision to split small differences between hardware, I just want something fairly quick to run that will indicate whether performance is in the right ballpark. Running without installation would be a boon. Anyone got any ideas?
Need expert advice on computer performance? Hardware and specs: 3.4Ghz Intel Core i7-2600K 8MB Cache Quad-Core ARCTIC COOLING Freezer 7 Pro Rev.2 92mm CPU Fan/Heatsink ASUS SABERTOOTH P67 REV 3.0 (Intel P67, 2xPCI-E, 8xSATA, 4xDDR3) 16GB (4GBx4) PC3 10666 DDR3 1333Mhz Memory Lifetime Warranty 128GB Crucial RealSSD C300 CTFDDAC128MAG-1G1 SATA3 SSD 22X LG SATA Dual Layer DVD+/-RW/CDRW w/Nero 1536MB GeForce GTX 580 GDDR5 PCI-E Dual-DVI (Major Brand) Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit InWin C583 Black ATX (3 5.25, 5 3.5) Fan, Front Audio/USB 650watt Corsair CMPSU-650TX The problem: choppy gameplay, severe framerate skipping (no framerate drop, as game time passes at the correct pace, but out of say 5 frames only 1 displays, thus the choppiness and framerate skip), flickering and blocky shadows, additional texture flicker when reflecting intense light (probably related to shadow issue) Game and settings: Total War games. Found issue in Rome Total War, Medieval 2, Empire, and Napoleon. Tested extensively with Medieval 2 Total War, attempted gameplay on MAX and MIN settings, no change to magnitude of framerate skip. Additional system info: latest graphics drivers installed, harddrive defragmented. During gameplay surprisingly CPU reaches 100%, but Physical Memory usage never exceeds 2.2GB or around 6% of the 16GB total... not sure why. Tried applying a 4GB patch to exe, memory usage during gameplay still hovers around 2.2GB. In fact the game process only took 400MB memory. This is a relatively old game, I think I have a powerful highend system, so I should at least be able to play smoothly. Unless something is wrong with my system? I benchmarked using Heaven Unigen and got a score of 2400 on default and 2000 on MAX. After installing some utilities like Smart Defrag, and Advanced System Care (and waiting a few weeks) I benchmarked again to find the default score dropped to 2000. I don't understand what's happening to my system, shouldn't those utilities (which I used) help improve system performance? And what about the general framerate skipping during gameplay, can someone help me? Hi LN, how can I tell if the processor or video cards are overheating? I'm aware of the BIOS that I can check for CPU temperature, but that requires a reboot. Is there a way to check the temperature while the game is running to be certain?
HUGE HARDWARE PROBLEM/PERFORMANCE DROP!!!!!!!? ok, so last year my computer crashed and I had to wipe the hard drive. When I was done with that, I notice that everything was slower then usual and when I go to play my games they run terribly, they run at like 15 on the lowest setting, but they used to run at like 40, and I know for a fact I meet the system requirements???? My video card is a Radeon hd5450 with 512mb of ram, but when I run tests it says that it only has 243mb, and I know its wrong, and I have the latest driver for it. Any Ideas, im always happy to give more info :D
Poor performance for the Hardware? So, I have tried this twice, and both times I keep getting copy/pasta rhetoric or people who do not understand the issue. Issue -Computer is performing far worse than hardware alone can account for History -Prebuilt comp bought approx 1 1/2 years ago. -Upgraded Power supply to 550 watt, graphics to Nvidea 9800gt -Nvidea card died -PCI slots died *the nework card stop working with the message "system firmware does not have enough information to use..." Upgrading motherboard firmware had no effect. Same error message with card in either slot, in a different OS (Vista), and even with a brand new card. -Installed ATI Radeon 5400 I suspect my motherboard may be crapping out, but I know of no way to test this and have never heard of a motherboard dying in pieces. With the 9800gt Fallout 3 ran at about 30 fps on the lowest settings. With the radeon it runs at about 15. So. 2.4 GHz quad core processor, 4 GB DDR, and a radeon 5400 video card. Of course it is not going to be top of the line, but... Plants VS Zombies stutters. Worms Armageddon stutters. And Titan Quest runs at about 25 fps. Changing video options in either the catalyst control panel or in-game has no effect on this. And before Marv, or some other genius points out that the 9800gt is better than the radeon 5400, I know. And I know the radeon is hardly an awesome graphics card. But I also know that Plants VS Zombies can be run by most, if not all, intergrated chips so an actual card, even a 5400, has zero excuse for stuttering. Same with worms. These titles should run on anything bigger than a calculator. Additional Info. As the PCI slots are not working, there is no card in them. There is no obvious damage. I have tried all current drivers for the video card. Windows is installed on a small partition, not a small hard drive (why can't people figure out that if a report says a hard drive is less than 40 GB it is likely a partition?). The system does not produce excessive heat. I have done all the standard things in attempting to address this. Drivers, virus scans, clean OS install, etc. Hardware Processor Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.40GHz Memory (RAM) 4.00 GB Graphics ATI Radeon HD 5400 Series Gaming graphics 2815 MB Total available graphics memory Manufacturer ACER Model Aspire M5640/M3640 Total amount of system memory 4.00 GB RAM System type 64-bit operating system Number of processor cores 4 Display adapter type ATI Radeon HD 5400 Series Total available graphics memory 2815 MB Dedicated graphics memory 1024 MB Dedicated system memory 0 MB Shared system memory 1791 MB Display adapter driver version 8.732.0.0 (rolled back, had worse performace with the new ones) Primary monitor resolution 1680x1050 DirectX version DirectX 10 So, if you have any idea what may cause this, and I have not already covered, please halp!
Which college major is this? I'm interested in becoming a computer engineer but I don't know exactly the name on this major. The one I was looking for is the people who test computer hardware and try to make them faster and better. For example, an engineer testing a graphics card on a computer and working to find ways to improve the performance of it. If this isn't a major then what is the closest major to this. I was think computer hardware engineer but I wasn't sure.
Best answer, easy 10 points: Help me find best computer to use w/ speech recognition/hands-free technology? Best answer = easy 10 points. Hi everyone : ) I have many severe conditions, incl., quickly-advancing Rheumatoid Arthritis, Fibromyalgia as well as also a vocal cord and breathing disorder, so I really *do* need help finding a computer with speech recognition/hands free computing software to buy to help minimize the pain. I’ve been searching for months, I’m stymied and appreciate your help immensely. For the best answer I’m offering 10 points : ) Here’s the Wiki to bring all up to speed on this kind of software: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speech_recognition (A tiny background, my exp. w/ Dragon Beta on a Sony laptop long about 10 yrs ago—horrible! It didn’t work. It couldn’t understand me, but typed *pages* when the dog barked, lol! The computer was PAINFULLY SLOW AND COMPLETELY INACCURATE and had “ghosts”—multi images of programs overlapping and none of the working : ) ) As such, I’m thinking a high-performance, possibly gaming computer, might overcome what was lacking before, most likely a desktop...although, I’ve NO gaming aspirations, too painful. I do enjoy photography, browsing the internet and listening to music (maybe transferring my LPs to MP3s) though (I’ve heard buying an external hard drive for this might be the best way to go for computer efficiency, what do you think? All in all, I’m hoping that *you know best*! : ) Because I’ve had to scrimp and save for well over 5-6 yrs (plus family help,) *this computer MUST last as long as absolutely possible*, b/c it will take longer than that to afford another. The Guidelines: Replies *only* from people who are severely handicapped with hand/arm disabilities and *must* use such a program themselves or other severely disabled persons, Esp. persons who have the above disorders, as well as equally limiting disabilities pertaining, esp. to the hands, arms and voice who REQUIRE voice-recognition typing programs *or* persons having, long-standing, *verifiable*, personal experience REQUIRING THEM to use a voice or speech-driven voice command/typing programs on a computer (for ex: maybe you’re a dyslexic doctor or something, that would be great, since I, too, have a special vocabulary it needs to understand.) Sounds harsh, sorry about that, but I need an answer from someone with an intimate and detailed knowledge of this software and how it works with computers. The Entire High Performance Computer System *MUST* COST LESS THAN $1200 (the more under cost you come, while still fulfilling *all* needs = best chance you’ll win.) Must have *amazingly* good reasons to go even a few hundred above (see above re: scrimping & saving.) The ENTIRE system *must* come from a highly reputable company (be COMPLETE and ready “out of the box”, no customizing, *monitor* MUST come *with* the entire computer pkg.) and must contain (but not be limited to...) Hardware: Dual to Quad core processors, 19” monitor INCLUDED, 4GB DDR2 memory (minimum), 320GB(minimum) hard drive, reads and writes all forms of media, including dual-layer CDs and DVDs, high-end GPU (preferably dedicated on a video card) to handle rapid text/commands, have also heard Direct X10 + may be useful in multimedia capabilities. Monitor doubles as digital t.v.*at no additional cost* with *no* additional software required (opt. the ability to also record t.v.) Please, *no* wireless mice or keyboards (I hear they eat through batteries,) as well as the usual, quality speakers, great USB and other ports, like memory card reader, etc; webcam nice but not essential, same w/ printer. PREFERENCE TO PCs. Very positive experiences with Gateways (haven’t tried voice software on them, though,) as noted above, Quite negative exp. w/ Sony. Absolutely NO DELLS! Software: FULL VOICE-RECOGNITION/TYPING/NAVIGATION SOFTWARE ALREADY INSTALLED, READY TO GO; Windows Vista Home Premium, *MUST* have complete versions of software,*no test versions* of anything! Otherwise, I’m open-minded & have access to XP programs. IT/Technical Support: None of this, “We don’t support third-party software” business, even though the computer company has the software already installed out of the box. Essential that it’s really good, intelligent people who know all aspects of the product (esp. voice software) and provide Service and Tech Support for as long as possible that make a computer worth buying.(a company that doesn’t stand behind it’s product is worthless.) Without Support and Service, I might as well be buying an *extremely expensive*, ire-invoking paperweight, which I won’t do.) (Dragon/Nuance software’s tech calls were once a minimum of $30 or more each---I’m not going for that again in any way, shape or form (sorry to sound harsh, but to beat all, at the time, they hadn’t even *answers*! For that kind of money.) Alright, so that’s as much as I know about computers and what I really need : ) I know their are others out there (hopefully some of you) who are much more knowledgeable, both about real Give me a minute to make this more succinct... The Guidelines: Replies *only* from people who are severely handicapped with hand/arm disabilities and *must* use speech recognition type/command programs themselves or have equally limiting disabilities who REQUIRE voice-recognition typing programs. ALL OTHERS: MUST have verifiable, *extensive*, *intimate* knowledge USING such software REGULARLY, *particularly* how *exactly* it works and what it requires of computers. The Entire High Performance Computer System from HIGHLY REPUTABLE COMPANY *MUST* COST LESS THAN $1200 (Good reasons? I might spend more.) PCs Preferred. Positive exp. w/ Gateways (have not tried such software on them, however) No Sonys, NO DELLs. ENTIRE system *must* be COMPLETE and ready “out of the box”, no customizing. next... Hardware: Dual to Quad core processors, 19” monitor INCLUDED, 4GB-5GB memory, 320GB-750GB hard drive, reads and writes all forms of media, including dual-layer CDs and DVDs, high-end GPU (preferably dedicated on a video card) to handle rapid text/commands, possible Direct X10 may be useful in multimedia capabilities. Monitor *MUST COME WITH COMPUTER* and double as digital t.v.*at no additional cost* with *no* additional software required, opt. the ability to also record t.v. 19” screen *minimum* SHARP resolution, deep color saturation. NOTHING WIRELESS. Quality speakers, multiple memory reader a *plus*, quality speakers, webcam—nice; printer, optional. Software: FULL VOICE-RECOGNITION/TYPING/NAVIGATION SOFTWARE ALREADY INSTALLED, READY TO GO; Windows Vista Home Premium, *MUST* have complete versions of software,*no test versions*! (If Dragon recommended, must come under total cost.) next... IT/Technical Support: Essential, Intelligent and FREE. Must support 3rd party software that *they* installed by default. MUST—in-depth knowledge of speech-recognition software. *Computer MUST last as long as absolutely possible*
Is there anyway i can increase my processing power by 0.2 GHz without getting a new computer? I just bought dawn of war II and its expansion and i thought i could run it, only to find that my computer only has 3 GHz instead of the needed 3.2 GHz, everything else matches up fine including the graphics card. The FPS plummets in the performance test where there's laser fire and these huge explosion everywhere. Oddly enough the FPS also dropped during the intro movie. First when that dreadnaught used his flamerthrower (the game pretty much froze), and the second time when that woman killed that guy with electricity, it also seemed to be low when she was trying to kill the guy without a helmet. I find it odd that my computer couldnt run the intro movie, never had that happen before and it's not the first time i've bought a game without the necessary hardware (though normally my graphics card is to blame, not my processor). My mother says she's planning on getting me a better computer for christmas anyway, but i was wondering if there was anyway to boost my proccessing speed by 0.2 GHz at least without having to wait more than half a year? If it matters, this computer is a sony vaio with windows xp, i believe it was made sometime in the mid to late 2000s. My graphics card is a geforce 7200. And no, lowering the graphics settings didnt fix the problem, even though it did boost the FPS during the explosions scene it was still obviously unplayable. why is everyone assuming this is a laptop? it's a desktop. who in their right mind would try to play a game on a laptop, you cant change the video card in those! and no, this geforce 7200 is not what came with the computer. i bought it and placed it in here (actually i place a 7300 in here, but that one literlly exploded so the computer guys replaced it with the 7200 that's in here now, along with my harddrive, which btw has more than doubled my memory space) system information, and a sticker on the thing, say it's a pentium 4 processor. will updating my graphics card really do it? that would be much simpler and cheaper than getting a new computer and paying the computer guys to tranfer all my data. would it also improve my graphics for batman arkham asylum. my computer can run that but it runs in slow motion.
How do I locate and remove corrupt junk files on my pc? I've been having computer hardware problems lately, I get a blue screen and my pc crashes all the time. I checked for viruses and managed to create a recovery disk, then bought a new hard drive and put on my OS etc with the disk. The same problem persisted and I thought it was just a hardware malfunction by then but a few days back a woman claiming to be from windows said that my pc had a junk file which was affecting my hardware performance (bearing in mind I sent numerous error reports), was it a scam or could it be true considering I had been experiencing pc problems which aren't fixed? If so how can I locate the file. By the way I think I've narrowed it down to my CPU as when I test it's performance the pc crashes. Pc specs: vista, 4gb RAM, intel quad core and pretty decent graphics card. The thing is I created the recovery disks (albeit stupidly) after I realized the problem, could they have been affected?
Can compressing C drive improve performance? I know this question has been asked a few times already, but most of the discussions I see are either from years ago when hardware was slower or are entirely theoretical/speculative. I have a fairly high-end computer (i7 with 6GB of RAM) and I've noticed that sometimes my hard drive (1TB WD Caviar Black) creates a bottleneck in performance (such as while copying a lot of large files). Can, on this computer, disk compression improve overall performance (such as by reducing read/write time)? Does anyone have first hand experience on the matter or have run benchmarks testing the performance difference? To alleviate confusion a little, my computer runs great. I have no speed problems in general, it's just that my hard drive is not as fast as I would have liked it to be. The only time there is slowdown is when I am doing a lot of read/write operations to the hard-drive since other applications have to wait their turn to use it. I am aware that compressing and decompressing takes CPU time. However, if the amount of CPU time it takes to compress/decompress is less than the amount of time it takes to read/write to the drive then, theoretically, some time could be saved, correct? If the amount of time it takes to compress/decompress is the same as the amount of time saved from reading/writing then performance should, theoretically, break even. At some point technology would have to advance enough for it to be far faster to compress/decompress than to read/write to a drive (which speed hasn't advance as rapidly as CPUs). Also, I have little money for new hardware. If I could afford it I might consider a solid state drive.
iTunes ruining my computers performance, what should I do? Hi, Recently I got a new computer, the alienware m15x, the computer is fantastic; love it. But I have one problem, last weekend I went to play Civilization 5 and it was running terribly, the framerate was unbelievably low, the game was too slow to play, and when I checked the windows experience index which told me my score was out of date as new hardware had been detected, so I re-ran the test and my 'Graphics' score had gone down from the previous (before problem) 6.9 to 2.8; I restored the computer and it was running like a charm, but after reinstalling various programs I have found that it happens whenever I install iTunes, as soon as I uninstall iTunes everything is fine, but I want to keep iTunes on my computer I was thinking it may be something to do with conflicting drivers perhaps?, anyway any help would be greatly appreciated.

Why is my performance significantly decreased on my graphics card...? I have two computers I have been comparing. The first is a dell precision M90 with 2GB of ram, an Intel Core2 Duo 2.0GHz processor, and an Nvidia Quadro FX 1500 256MB DDR3 graphics card. The second(the newer one) which is a Dell 540s has 3GB of ram, a Quad Core at 2.4GHz, and an ATI Radeon 3400 HD 512MB DDR3 graphics card in it. I noticed that my laptop has been doing much better gaming then the newer computer despite the hardware differences, so I decided to test my graphics cards in each one. I tested the 540s with the good graphics card under-clocked with a bench mark utility, and only got an average of 38 fps. While overclocked, I achieved 46 fps but with a 10 degree Celsius increase in temperature(not a problem). With my laptop which has the older graphics card, I got 52 fps average without any overclocking. I am extremely confused why their is such a difference, while the newer computer is so much better hardware wise. The computers are both running the same OS with same software. Can anybody give me any tips, or maybe a solution? Something has to be going wrong, and I assume it's on a software level, but both computers have updated drivers... Should I check the graphics card on the newer computer? Possibly take it out and put it in a different PCI-E slot? Thanks, I really need help with this, as I don't want that new computer to go to waste. :D
how do I dual graphics cards on my desktop? How can I set up SLI on my computer? I have 2 nvidia cards: a 9600gt and a 9800gt. I have an nvidia 650sli mobo. Would it be beneficial to me to set up sli so I can dual my cards? Basically I want to improve my computer's performance to play FFXIV when it comes out this Sept. I scored a 2950 on the benchmark test which is "average." Not sure if setting up sli and using both cards would improve anything.... I'm kind of computer hardware ignorant so talk slow. lol Oh..I didn't know that. :(
so.. i just upgraded my ram.. what do you think? i just upgraded from 512mb to 2gb. after sending payment i started stressin' about wether it was all nice and compatible with my computer. i found it to be but i figured i'd ask someone else's opinion.. - **my memory specifications Standard Memory 512 MB Maximum Memory 2.0 GB Memory Expansion 2 sockets Memory Comments PC2-4200 DDR2 SDRAM DIMMs. Supports Dual Channel DDR2. **my new memory specifications.. 2GB ( 2X1GB) PC2-4200 533MHz DDR2 RAM Specifications: 2X1024MB (2GB) DIMM PC2-4200 533Mhz DDR Memory Maximum 5.4GB bandwidth Voltage: 1.8V CAS Latency: 4 240 Pin, unbuffered DIMM - looks exact i know, i'm pretty much looking for comfort & what i really came to ask about as... well i'm worred about the level of performance i'll get from these.. i got 2gb for less than another 512mb stick.. when i install these.. is there a site i could go to get a qualiy or a performance level test of my hardware? j/w.. thanks much for your time.

Knights Of The Old Republic Game Issues? Ok so 2 questions here 1.) I put a 9200 ATI graphics card into my computer and I got to display properties and there are 4 different selections for the 9200, are are 2 that say default monitor 9200, 1 that says {default monitor} 9200 and one that says {default monitor} 9200 - Secondary. Now it only is letting me use the secondary one right now and I think it is limiting my performance. Any help would be great 2.) I just installed Knights of the Old Republic and I got to configure to test my hardware to see if its all compatible and it says that my drivers are out of date and it says that Nvida cards must have the latest Detonator drivers when I dont even have a Nvidia card AND I have just updated my drivers when I installed the card. Thanks guys!

Why is my SSD drive running so slowly? I need some help understanding why my Patriot warp SSD hard drives are operating so slowly in raid-0 I recently started building a new computer. After a bit of benchmarking research I decided to use two SSD’s and put them in a RAID 0 configuration. Everyone I talked to told me that this would be the fastest solution for under a grand. I placed the drives in raid 0 with the built in motherboard raid controller, installed windows and everything runs fine but I couldn’t help but notice that it wasn’t booting/ running nearly as fast as I predicted. So I decided to benchmark it and compare them to my old hard drive running the same setup. My RAID-0 Patriots read at 60 Mbps and my old western digital read 70 Mbps. This shocked me to see even though running the SSD’s didn’t seem fast. I thought that they would at least benchmark as fast as a old school HHD. Just using 1 of these drives by themselves seemed to run much much faster than the two together (I didn’t benchmark this setup because it was before I knew of the problem) So I am confused, I was expecting at least 200Mbps (A hopeful estimate) In my research I found that the drives I’m using benchmarked alone at 120Mbps http://benchmarkreviews.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=250&Itemid=60 http://www.laptopmag.com/review/storage/patriot-warp-ssd.aspx Hardware list: Pentium I5-650 processor Gigabyte P55A-UD3 motherboard Coursair XMS3 dual channel memory 2X2Gs DDR3 Patriot Warp SSD 32G (two of these) I am using Performance test 6.1 for my benchmarking I am using windows 7

Which laptop should i choose? battery life vs. performance? I am trying to decide between 2 laptops. The first is the Acer Aspire Timeline 4810t-8480. It is a 14 inch 16:9 widescreen laptop, with an emphasis on thin, light, and high battery life, thanks to a power saving single core processor (1.4 Ghz CULV SU3500) it gets 8 hours of battery life. It weighs 4.2 pounds, is less than 1 inch thick and The laptop has a DVD burner, 4GB of ram, a 320 GB HDD, HDMI out and 802.11n networking. I purchased the computer for $550 (which is the very highest amount i can afford to pay for any laptop) The second laptop (which is really a placeholder for any of a dozen laptops with the same spec sheet and overall profile) is the Gateway NV5214u. It is a 15.6 inch 16:9 widescreen laptop that costs $500 and it doesnt have any stand out features, but it has every feature i would like a laptop to have on the hardware front. It does have an actual dual core processor (AMD 2.1Ghz) a DVD burner 4GB RAM, 320GB HDD, HDMI and 802.11n networking. It weighs a shade under 7 pounds, is like 1.7 inches thick and has a battery life of 3 hours 30 minutes in good conditions. So, it comes down to which one to keep, i have both unopened (stupid return policies mean i cant open them and test them for myself) sitting in my house. I assume people will ask about my usage to make a good recommendation, so i will say i am a heavy multitasker of light applications. that means i do lots of web browsing (firefox, many tabs) while listening to music and word processing. Occasionally i do some video/music compression, but because i do so many videos/songs at the same time, i usually save those for overnight jobs. Less than 1 time every 6 months i will do some very light video editing. I also like to download movies from torrent sites then watch them on my HDTV (thus HDMI is a must) or watch streams of shows on my TV (like top gear on BBC.) Basically, the main reason i havnt chosen the lighter laptop with better battery life is the single core processor. the chipset has HD and MPEG acceleration built in, which should handle watching movies via HDMI, but im worried its just not going to be fast enough. at the same time, i really dont want to settle for a laptop that is the same as the one im replacing it with (my current laptop is a 2 year old gateway with crummy battery life as well.) has anyone had experience with either of these laptops in everyday situations? im really torn here... Should have mentioned, i do play the occasional game or 2 (though they are games i can play with my current laptop with Intel GMA900, and both of my prospects FAR exceed that capability) and download songs from time to time. also, i do burn DVDs from time to time as well (though just like with audio/video compression, i usually do those when im not actually at the computer, though sometimes i will be there) oh yeah... not to be nitpicky, but detail in explanation is everything to me, so give some reasons for your recommendations if you can

What is really going on with my computer its complex.? Alright I have a Gateay q6600 series quadcore desktop and recently about 6 months ago my video card which was GForce by invidia burned out because of dust jamming up the fan deep within. I had to remove it and use the integrated video card which isn't near as good. other than that I have had no other problems with my pc up until now. I have 3.2 GB ram and have ran a diagnostic test on it and results were good so I don't think that is the problem although I have sen the following happen due to a RAM malfunction. Whats happening is that when my girlfriend logs into her account the PC freezes up with vertical like colorful lines and the PC has to be hard rebooted. Could this be a vista problem or possibly a hardware problem. I have always had vista problems but I am not for sure if vista could produce something like this. my PC has never froze before and it is 2 years old. I have no errors or nothing. I have ran through performance and reliability and see no problems. PLEASE HELP This is also a Computer with 3 user accounts 2 using windows aero and the whole eye candy and mine using white text on black basic windows classic. I have uninstalled the previous driver from the computer. The integrated video card is slower but it looks fine. ever since the dust messed up the GFORCE I have been dusting the computer out on a regular basis. I mean could this be the processor or serious hardware failure and is there a way to find out. I Paid 1400 bucks for this thing under 2 years ago. I'm scared
My psp did not pass widows logo testing to verify....should i do it anyway and continue? i was tryin to install my sp it gives me the chice to continue or cancel wat should i do? it gave me details of all this krap Designed for Microsoft Windows XP LogoHardware and software products displaying the Designed for Microsoft Windows XP logo have been tested for compatibility with Microsoft Windows operating systems through use of Microsoft-provided testing procedures. For the best performance, Microsoft recommends using hardware products that display the Designed for Microsoft Windows XP logo on the external packaging and on the device itself. Software for hardware products with the Designed for Microsoft Windows XP logo has a digital signature from Microsoft, indicating that the product was tested for compatibility with Windows and has not been altered since testing. For the latest updates, including security fixes, service packs, new Help files, and device drivers, see Windows Update in Help and Support Center. You may also want to contact the hardware vendor directly and ask for a device driver that has met the Designed for Microsoft Windows XP logo requirements. For more information, visit the Microsoft Windows Logo Program (go to http://www.microsoft.com/ and search for "Windows logo program") on the Microsoft Web site. Warning Microsoft strongly recommends you only use device drivers with the Designed for Microsoft Windows XP logo. Installing device drivers that have not been digitally-signed by Microsoft may disable the system, allow viruses onto your computer, or otherwise impair the correct operation of your computer either immediately or in the future. Installing Second HardDrive and adding new OS(s). Primary OS XP adding Linux or more.. can I do that? hi I have a bit complex situation here. My PC is actually an old PC: ASUS A7n8x-x mainboard - AMD 1.5GHz with only 512mb pc2700 memory yes it is an old system.. my XP Pro is running on 40GB IDE drive (yeah it s not SATA) I recently bought a 1tb SATA drive plus this : http://www.cooldrives.com/sahadradtoid.html as the adapter I haven't actually tested both of them. So I am planning to install a Linux or even more on the new 1tb SATA drive by partitioning them. and Setting this new drive to slave drive. I am pretty familiar with computer and hardware overall, but not as good as expert or more experienced ppl. I have never actually installed 2 or more OS in 1 system and having SATA drive running with adapter that kinda of thing. 1) Should I just clone my XP (at the 40GB drive) to the 1tb drive and set the new 1tb SATA drive as the master ? 2) Can OS actually run on the slave drive (my original plan without cloning my XP to the new drive) and if so, is there any downside of that in performance or anything ? 3) I heard that some (or all?) program will insist to be installed on the C:/ volume . Is this true ??? 4) if no (3) is true. Then I am confused how do you actually install 2 OS in 1 system ? I mean.. do you / can you install 2 or more OS on the same volume like say XP and Linux installed on the same C:/ volume...?? I mean isn't it confusing to have your windows system folder and their Linux files mixed in the same volume... Pls explain this or help me clear this up. Any authoritative & clear site ? Your help will be greatly appreciated!! thank you

Can you peer-edit this please? The career that I had in mind for the future was working with computer networking. For me, this career was one matched closely to my interests and personality type. Even though there are other choices. I feel that computer networking is the right the first path for me, at least for right now. There are many developments when it comes to working with or using your network. The goal of the computer network is for each computer to make every local resource available to any computer in the net in such a way that any program available to local users can be used remotely without degradation. This means that any program should be able to call on the resources of other computers which can be shared that includes software, data, and hardware. The goal for communication systems was to carry very reliable information from direct human consumption. The line errors of this design could easily be fixed by error detection and retransmission which doesn’t require the use of some computation and storage at both ends of each communication line. In order to protect against the total line failures, they should have been at least two strong paths in order to route each message. A person in so computer networking will typically use personality of being organized, detailed oriented, good communication and you have to be flexible and dependable. Computer networkers will be responsible for are responsible for the security, reliability, and performance of various network systems. They also need to have good intuition, creativity, patience, dedication, attention to detail, and a passion for technology which can help you when working to maintain, optimize, and troubleshoot various network operating systems. The goal in this career is to build and test software and hardware that will be used for communication, information processing, and storage. There are several advantages when it comes to using your network. One advantage is that a user can logon to a computer anywhere on the network and access their work files from the file server. Another advantage is sharing printers, plotters and modems the saves money and time. The last important solution is security to protect your Network Manager which can allocate usernames and passwords to all users to try to prevent unauthorized access network. There are also several disadvantages when it comes to using your network. One problem is that if something goes wrong with the file server the whole network will be unable to operate. You should also know that the technical skills that are needed to manage a network is much higher than working on a PC. The last important disadvantage is that users may use up too much of the storage space and this may cause problems on the network. The future is to have many different consoles into office. One for to stock exchange to monitor its own company’s and competitor’s activities. One for commodities markets to monitor and demand products or raw materials. And one for a scientific computer that is used for modeling and simulation to help plan for the future.
What graphics card can/should I upgrade to? I can only play Skyrim on its lowest settings, and performance still isn't that good. After some tests, I've determined that all my hardware should be able to play it no problem, except for my graphics card, which I'd like to upgrade. I have a $150 gift card for Best Buy, so my price range is around there (I'll shell out 20-30 more bucks if it's worth it.) The problem is, I don't know how to tell which cards are compatible with my computer, or which ones give me the best deal for my money. That's where you come in. How can I use what i described below to get a job as a systems administrator? I am a pc gamer looking for a job as a system administrator. My skills are building pc's to run high performance and non high performance games (on desktop and laptop computers) such as starcraft 2, counterstrike, quake, unreal tournament. I know how to install operating systems on machines and secure them with the most sufficient anti-virus software for protection while backing up my data on hard drives and external hard drives. I've used windows xp, windows vista, windows 7, linux- ubuntu, mint 7, fedora, red hat as well for testing of the games. During my spare time i research on whats going on in the computer world in terms of what hardware and software is coming out to where it could benefit not only my needs but others as well. My question is, out of everything i've just explained. How can I use my skills and knowledge to get a job as a system administrator?
Hard drive not recognized? I took the hd out of a new mybook today and I did break a plastic piece surrounding where the data cable goes, it doesn't look like it would interfere with the driver's performance. Anyway, i put it in my desktop, but the dive wouldn't show. I touched it to see if I could feel it spinning up or anything, but I was unsure if it was that drive or residual vibrations off the rest of the PC. The funny thing about it is that the computer was showing as finding new hardware, but the drive never visualized. I took a 320 out in place of this new 1tb hd, so I was thinking that this may be a power supply issue? i did restart, and I'm not at home right now so I don't have the opportunity to stick the drive back in it's enclosure and test it. Any ideas?

Portal 2 on ATi Radeon HD-4250 (Mobile/ Laptop) embedded GPU? I just bought my brother a new Laptop for his Army training at AIT so he can do something while he has hes time off there. Along with its many other features he wanted such as HD webcam, etc.. It was a good buy and Acer Laptops are in fact good buys, unlike their Desktop PC's. Anyways I tried installing NFS Shift and it lagged badly on low graphic settings... Even though systemrequirementlab said it passed the test 100% (I think that site only checks the names of your hardware, not its performance.) Which is what I expected, that that game with all of its velocity loads, high FPS requirement, and motionblur would make it heavy lag. So what are some good PC games that will run decently or okay on this set-up, Will Portal 2 Play? thanks. -Matt btw I am pretty good at computers, but when it comes to "down-to-level" GPU info I'm not very great, So if you have an answer you do not need to dumb it down or anything... Once again, seemingly minor maintenance problems had crippled the digital System 7. About twelve million people were affected in the crash of July 1, 1991. Said the New York Times Service: "Telephone company executives and federal regulators said they were not ruling out the possibility of sabotage by computer hackers, but most seemed to think the problems stemmed from some unknown defect in the software running the networks." Within the week, a red-faced software company, DSC Communications Corporation of Plano, Texas, owned up to glitches in the signal transfer point software that DSC had designed for Bell Atlantic and Pacific Bell. The immediate cause of the July 1 crash was a single mistyped character: one tiny typographical flaw in one single line of the software. In a heavily loaded computer system, a steady stream of high-priority processes can prevent a low-priority process from ever getting resources. Generally, one of two things will happen. Either the process will eventually be run (at 2 A.M. Sunday, when the system is finally lightly loaded), or the computer system will eventually crash and lose all unfinished low-priority processes.... Rumor has it that, when they shut down the IBM 7094 at MIT in 1973, they found a low-priority process that had been submitted in 1967 and had not yet been run. From Silbershatz and Galvin, pp. 142-143. GTE Corp. mistakenly printed 50,000 unlisted residential phone numbers and addresses in 19 directories that were leased to telemarkteters in communities between Santa Barbara and Huntington Beach. Whats a good (new release or in beta) with low min PC requirements and is a 3D MMORPG that has NO cash shop!? i was going to play this one http://www.onrpg.com/MMO/Iris-Online but they have a cash shop now =/ so i am looking for something that looks like that, but cant be too hardcore, heres my computer specs (its a Dell Inspiron Duo tablet/laptop) model is Inspiron 1090 this is what it says when i run WoW through "can you run it?", only thing that fails is one part of the video card test You Have: Intel(R) Atom(TM) CPU N550 @ 1.50GHz (my computer says 1.50GHz 1.50 GHz and i was told it was dual core? maybe not) You Have: 1.5 GHz Performance Rated at: 1.8 GHz You Have: 2.0 GB (RAM) You Have: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium Edition Service Pack 1 (build 7601), 32-bit You Have: Intel(R) Graphics Media Accelerator 3150 (was a few other things like direct x but they arent important) the only thing that failed is the video card, and this is the reason it shows (has a list of requirements) Required You Have Video RAM 128 MB 256.0 MB 3D Yes Yes Hardware T&L Yes No Pixel Shader version 2.0 2.0 Vertex Shader version 2.0 2.0a what is Hardware T&L, why do i need it, and why doesn't my computer have it? and also the first question lol! (PS Not interested in runescape or games of that quality, looking for higher graphic games, like in the example i gave)
Yet another question about why my processor won't boot.? (Forgive me, Yahoo answers. This is like my 5th hardware question in the past week :P ) Ok, so. Before I get started, I'm just going to give the specs of my computer so it's easier. Old Motherboard:ECS 945GCT-M (http://www.ecs.com.tw/ECSWebSite/Pro...nuID=1&LanID=0) Old Processor: Pentium 4 3.20GHz (Couldn't grab a link) New Motherboard: GIGABYTE EP45-UD3P (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128358) New Processor: Core 2 Quad Q8400 Yorkfield (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115057) K, here's what happened. I bought a new motherboard with plans to get a processor soon after, I put the motherboard in just fine though I did notice a little significant performance loss, but just chucked it up to not reinstalling the OS when I did(custom built computer, don't have the disc.). I got the processor, I installed it just fine. However, when I turned it on it wouldn't boot past "Verifying DMI pool", it just kept locking up there. It also locked up in the BIOS. I put the old Pentium 4 back in and got a BIOS update to the most recent one. Put the new processor back in, this time it locked up at the Windows loading screen. Figured hey, it's Windows. Maybe Windows is being stupid and I need to reinstall my OS, let's try to boot off of a Linux CD. Downloaded Knoppix and burned it to a disc, tried to boot up. Same thing, locks up in the OS loading screen. Ok, process of elimination. Next up let's take a look at my Hard Drive. Downloaded a Hard Drive Diagnostic, ran a Long Generic and Long Drive Self Test everything checked out to be OK. Next target, RAM test. This is where it gets weird. I was going to run a 2 hour memtest on each stick of RAM individually like I was told to by some tech support site. Whenever I take a stick out my DVD/CD drive stops being detected or something. Like, in Windows Media Player it'll say to connect a burner and restart the player to start burning and the computer will not read any discs put in either when this happens. It does this 100% of the time when I take a stick of RAM out, and randomly when both are in even and I have to restart the computer to get it read discs etc. Not too sure about the DVD/CD drive thing, that's just odd and kinda disturbing. (I don't want to buy another motherboard >.< ) As for the performance loss I mentioned earlier, I just found out today that I'm running my system in 32bit mode or whatever, and before with my old motherboard I was running in 64 I think. Would that explain the performance loss and why the processor isn't booting? If so, how do I fix it? Thanks. Oh yeah, I cleared the CMOS too. @Bubbie, erm. My operating system is fine, I just don't have the disc the guy used to install the OS on this computer, I can probably get my product key and get a replacement from Microsoft. This doesn't seem like an OS problem though,
Getting a laptop and need advice? Ok so i grew way past my obsolete Pentium 4 comp (had it for like 5 years and it has no problem whatsoever) And i was thinking of getting a laptop The one i looked over is Alienware, the new M17X laptop, i heard great things about it from friends and needed some advice. ------------------------ Laptop specs: Procesor processor: Intel® CoreTM i7 Extreme 45 nm 940XM 2130 MHz Turbo 3.4 Ghz 8192 KB Intel display: WUXGA 1920 x 1200 17 inch RGB-LED RAM 8 GB DDR3 1333 MHz Hard disk type: 256 GB RAID 1 Protection SSD Video 1024 MB Dedicated Mobility Radeon ATI 2 x HD 5870 Multimedia Blu-Ray Combo 5.1 Surround sound inside Multimedia card reader: Yes WEBcam: 2.0 MP Sound: Internal High-Definition 5.1 Surround Sound Ports audio: 3 PCMCIA: 1 eSATA: 1 VGA: 1 USB 2.0: 3 HDMI: 1 DisplayPort: 1 Firewire: 1 RJ-45: 1 Comunications Wireless: 10/100/1000 Wireless: 802.11a/b/g/n Bluetooth: yes power Li Ion 9 Cells Weight 5.3 Kg Dimensions (W x D x H): 405.8 x 321.3 x 51.31 - 53.59 mm Other AC Adaptor 240W Alienware US/International Qwerty keyboard Numeric Keyboard OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 32/64 BIT OEM ------------------------------------ 1. Has alienware gone bad since it was bought by dell? i heard good stuff but i need more opinions 2. Is the m17x worth it? (i dont think money will be a prob there) 3. Do laptops have a long lifespan (consider the fact that i take great care of my computer like cleaning it every week , fixing its problems both software and hardware and keeping it cool) HOW LONG WOULD THE LAPTOP LIVE CONSIDERING IDEAL CONDITIONS? HOW LONG WOULD IT TAKE BEFORE THE LAPTOP WILL GET OBSOLETE? (i think it will take a long time considering that games are already realistic graphically) 4. Will it meet the gaming performance i am looking for? 5. I heard they can heat up to 110*C , will the latest ThermalTake cooling pad keep it to around 30-50*C? 6. How long can the battery go before it dies? 7. How powerful is the wireless signal (almost all wireless or phone signals get jammed in my room so i hope it has a strong signal) 8. I DONT CARE ABOUT THE WEIGHT OF THE LAPTOP XDDDDD 9. Please share a good/bad experience with alienware laptops if you had it before 10. I can fix almost any hardware or software problem i just have to know if the laptop will come broken or not (they have them at the local store and they allow me to test them, but i hear that an inherent defect in a laptop manifests around 1000 Hours of functioning) 11. Any other important detail you can think of that would affect or not affect the performance. Thanks and please help!

Programs stay running in memory after i close them, slow start up, .etc? My computer could run the most cpu and graphics intensive programs on highest settings 2 weeks ago. Now it takes me half an hour to google something. Picture example of the types of things that happen to me about every 30-60 seconds (that is, I stall for 2-5 minutes, then everything runs free and normal for 30-60 seconds, till another 2-5 minute stall): http://xs234.xs.to/xs234/08491/why942.jp... Programs take 2-5 minutes to start up as well (firefox). I notice when watching them in taskmanager, they show up as soon as I click on them, however instead of starting off at 100k memory usage and going up to say a standard 120,000k in a second or two, they start off and grow super slow. The seconds turn to minutes. 1 minute after opening firefox is at 7k memory usage. Then 3 minutes, it's at 90k, then it opens after another minute or two. I've waited for 30 mins for a game to load, just staring at a loading screen which used to complete in less than two minutess. I didn't wait any longer, but the point is nothing loads at an appropriate speed. I ran a virus test, last week. I had 7 harmful files. I deleted them all. But then my computer did not improve at all. I rescanned, the files are gone (they didn't look too scary or serious anyway), but the slowness remains. No spyware, besides tracking cookies which get deleted every once and a while. I can't think it's a hardware issue because if I wait 20 minutes for the only game i can stand to wait the loading screen out I get smooth same as always great performance. It's just loading things that takes FOREVER. In that picture example up there i gave: http://xs234.xs.to/xs234/08491/why942.jp... the program highlighted is msiexec.exe...Well I ran that install and it completed at least ten minutes before i took the screen shot. All my programs stay after I close them taking up memory and just doing nothing until i manually end process them. :-( help? http://xs.to/xs.php?h=xs234&d=08491&f=why942.jpg the picture url wasn't finishing with the right extension ^
My Processor Rating.. And about my Graphics card? I want to know something... I was on http://www.systemrequirementslab.com/ and when I checked if my computer would be able to run a game in the processor section it said: You Have: 2.31 GHz Performance Rated at: 4.62 GHz I'm curious to know why it says its rated at twice its speed (No I didn't over clock the processor) But also.. It said my graphics card failed the test to run this game (I know my graphics card sucks, its a Nvidea GeForce 6150se) but I want to know if the analyzation got it wrong.. But then again when I run a dxdiag on my computer it says its a 512mb VRAM card too... Video Card Minimum: Graphics card 256 MB, from nVidia® GeForce 6800 or ATI® Radeon X800 You Have: GeForce 6150SE nForce 430 Features: Minimum attributes of your Video Card Required You have Video RAM 256 MB______________________________ 512.0 MB Hardware T&L Yes ______________________________Yes Pixel Shader version 2.0 __________________________3.0 Vertex Shader version 2.0 _________________________3.0 Well.. if anyone could shed some light into this.... Thanks ;) Almost forgot.. With my video card, its an onboard card, when I bought the computer it had Vista, I switched to windows xp sp3, and I know vista requires dedicated VRAM, and since the card was used to support both graphics and the requirements of vista, would me switching to xp free up the VRAM on the card?
Will this Gaming PC build work? Long story short, house burned down, had insurance, getting new comp for free. So I figured I'd build my own gaming tower this time around, but I've been out of the tech world for a while and want to be ABSOLUTELY sure that all the hardware jives together. It will be foremost a gaming rig, hoping to run games the like of Skyrim, Battlefield 3, WoW, and other high quality games at Maxed or close to maxed graphics at 1080p on a 27'. So enough of that, here's my proposed build: Case: COOLER MASTER Storm Enforcer SGC-1000-KWN1 Black SECC / ABS Plastic ATX Mid Tower Computer Case ATX PS2 / EPS 12V (optional ) Power Supply Mobo: ASUS Maximus IV Gene-Z LGA 1155 Intel Z68 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard Proccessor: Intel Core i5-2500K Sandy Bridge 3.3GHz (3.7GHz Turbo Boost) 4 x 256KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache LGA 1155 95W Quad-Core Desktop Processor BX80623I52500K PSU: CORSAIR Enthusiast Series TX750 V2 750W ATX12V v2.31/ EPS12V v2.92 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Active PFC High Performance Power Supply RAM: CORSAIR Vengeance 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1866 (PC3 15000) Desktop Memory Model CMZ8GX3M2A1866C9 Graphics: EVGA SuperClocked 01G-P3-1461-KR GeForce GTX 560 (Fermi) 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card Extra Liquid Cooling: CORSAIR H80 (CWCH80) High Performance Liquid CPU Cooler Burner: SAMSUNG CD/DVD Burner 22X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 16X DVD+R DL 22X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-R 24X CD-RW 48X CD-ROM Black SATA Model SH-222AB - OEM And running Win 7 Home Premium. And If anyone has a preferance for thermal paste I'd like to know. A sidenote; I plan to test the waters with OCing wth this rig, after a boatload more research, I've read the 2500k should produce good speeds, will my PSU/ other components handle a little OCing? Thanks in advance for the help! Daniel

Computer specs: Intel Core 2 Duo T8100@2.1Ghz 3GB DDR2 RAM NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS Operates on 32 Bit HP Dv6700 Series (Its actually Dv6880 SE) I tried to burn using: Windows ( default burner) Nero 6 DVD Decrypter IMGburn powerDVD AnyDVD I also updated my GEARaspiWDM Driver to the latest driver. Can anybody give me a advise regarding a career in consulting? Hi, I graduated with a degree in IT engineering from an engineering college affiliated to University Of Pune, India in 2009. While still in college I did not have any job offer from any IT companies visiting our campus, all due to low grades and poor academic performance. I managed to get a job off campus where I was hired as an Trainee Software Developer in a start-up IT company. I started working there but my job was more of QA where I would test the mobile games that are being developed and port them from J2ME to Android to some extent. After studying 4 years of engineering, I realized that I am not interested working much into technology as working on the business side. So i made up mind and resigned from the job after 5 months. As I was more keen on getting broader business experience before pursuing a full time career in any industry & becoming an expert in that field, so I started doing research about Strategy Consulting and dreaming working in MCKinsey/BCG/ Bain. I applied for above three and a few other but all in vain as I never got through, as I realized it is highly impossible to get into these companies with such low grades and no work experience. Also these companies mostly hire IIT graduates. My academic performance is very average with very little extra curricular. 10th- 66.8% 12th- 55% Graduation (B.Tech) (average of 4 years)- 52.4%, I flunked once in graduation. During that 1 year gap in engineering I worked for 7 months as an IT Support Engineer in the IT department of an construction company where my work was to troubleshoot hardware/software/LAN/WAN problem, installing & updating software packages/LAN/WAN, and conducting a review of the configuration of computers in the organization. After 6 months of gap since resignation from the first job after graduation I managed to get a job of an Analyst from one of the Big 4 for their Risk Advisory services. Here my work revolves around AUTOMOBILE/MANUFACTURING companies, where I help my team members in creating Standard Operating Procedures, Internal Audit, conducting business process reviews and formatting word documents & PPT, creating minutes of meetings in Microsoft office 2007. As I have very less interest in programming and my programming skills are also average, I took up this job which pays me over Rs.15,000/- a month. Its been more than 1 month since I took up this job. Most of the people in my team (15) are Chartered Accountants except for my manager who is an MBA graduate and is a Mechanical Engineering degree undergraduate. Also I came to that people working at this designation as me (Analyst) are mostly 99.99% commerce graduates, just out of their colleges . My future plan is to pursue an MBA from an international B-school, 2-3 years from now. I am not expecting to get an admit in to Harvard or London Business school but I am aiming for an globally recognized institute. I took up this job because I thought the name of Big 4 on my resume would fill up the gaps due to poor academic performance during engineering. I am planning to work here for 2 years (1 at least) & I am thinking of trying again for Business Analyst position at McKinsey after 1 year. But this feeling of me being an IT engineer working with commerce undergraduates and doing Internal Audit is not letting me focus on my daily work hence my productivity is getting hampered. I am really CONFUSED whether or not I have taken a right decision. I am wondering what impact this decision will have when I would be applying to top 20 b-schools in UK/US/France ?? Also does working in this area as an Analyst helps you getting a job in strategy consulting firms like McKinsey & Co, BCG etc ?? Is Internal Audit/ Standard Operating Procedures/Business Process Review meant only for Chartered Accountants ?? Can anyone please give me a detail explanation for my above queries, I am worried and feeling insecure at this point of time. Thanks in advance.
Will the Sims 3 Work on My Laptop? I currently have the sims 2. I have a TON of cc dlownloaded, and I would like to get rid of that, but I can't stand the maxis-made objects. I was considering asking for the sims 3 for my birthday in July, and switch from ts2, to ts3. I'm not exactly sure how it will affect my laptop, though. MY SYSTEM PROPERTIES: - AMD ATHLON (tm) PROCESSOR TF-36 2.00 GHz -2.00 gb of RAM, 1.75 usable - WINDOWS 7 OS - 87.1 GB FREE of 136 GB [after ts2 installed & cc installed] - 3200 Geforce Nvidia graphics card. Now that we know that, I have a few questions. Will the SIMS 3 RUN ON MY LAPTOP WITHOUT SLOWING IT DOWN? How will it affect my laptop? I took a test on systemrequirementslab.com and here are my results: http://tinypic.com/r/123tq9k/6 The graphics card is not in the list. It wasn't in the sims 2 list either, but it still worked. The test thing said it was fine, and I imagine it is.
Programs stay running in memory after i close them, slow start up, .etc? My computer could run the most cpu and graphics intensive programs on highest settings 2 weeks ago. Now it takes me half an hour to google something. Picture example of the types of things that happen to me about every 30-60 seconds (that is, I stall for 2-5 minutes, then everything runs free and normal for 30-60 seconds, till another 2-5 minute stall): http://xs234.xs.to/xs234/08491/why942.jpg Programs take 2-5 minutes to start up as well (firefox). In that picture example up there i gave: http://xs234.xs.to/xs234/08491/why942.jpg, the program highlighted is msiexec.exe...Well I ran that install and it completed at least ten minutes before i took the screen shot. All my programs stay after I close them taking up memory and just doing nothing until i manually end process them. :-( help? http://xs.to/xs.php?h=xs234&d=08491&f=why942.jpg the picture url wasn't finishing with the right extension ^ No I don't have a virus, if you read, clearing the virus I had did not improve my performance
any one eant tips on building a computer? just though id leave tips for anyone planning on making their own computer: Basic Hardware Info: There are several main parts builders need to know: the motherboard, CPU, power supply, RAM, video card, case, hard drives, optical/floppy drives, and sound cards. Most people believe that you build a system around the CPU, an AMD or Intel processer chip. That's incorrect. A builder knows that when you build a PC, it's based off of the motherboard. The motherboard is pretty much like a human skeletal system: EVERYTHING is put together from it. The first thing you need to do is figure out what kind of a PC you want to build: Are you building a basic computer, to do Word and Excel and some web browsing? Or a pimped out, ultimate gaming rig? Or how about a nice Home Entertainment PC? Once you figure that out, you can then select the parts you will need. The big differences between these three is: 1) You only need basic parts for the basic computer, nothing extravagant. Don't need a dedicated GPU (video card), when only a built-in GPU will work fine. Cheapest system to make, really. 2) You are going for the best bang for the buck or the highest priced parts available today. Budget gamers, and mid-gamers aim for the best bang for the buck method, sometimes building a system around the idea of using a certain part that they want (ex. they get the best video card they can, and skimp on the other parts as best as they can). 3) A HTPC (Home Theater PC) can be more expensive than a typical gamer's rig because of the essential component in this PC: Silence. A HTPC is made to be like TIVO; go through TV channels, but you can also burn/record them onto your hard drive, and you can even do some web browsing on that nice 50" Samsung LCD HDTV you bought a month ago. As such, HTPC makers biggest focus is on the CASE because that defines how big of a system they can make, and how much cooling they can get while putting as much of the best parts into it the case can handle. As you can see, these 3 basic building functions are very diverse and different from each other. HOWEVER, thats just the pure build idea; a budget PC can be a budget gaming rig; and a decent gaming rig can also second as a HTPC. It comes down to how you build it and what you use. Now, we're going to work on the assumption that you are building a gaming rig, like most of us do. 1) The motherboard. YOU MUST DECIDE two things before selecting a motherboard, IMHO. A) Intel or AMD? If you're worried about the flat dollar amount of the build, go with AMD as their CPUs are, AT THE MOMENT, cheaper. Bang for the buck, or best you can get, methods of buying will mean getting an Intel chip. Preferably a Core2Duo chip that's based off their new FSB 1333MHz standard, and not the old 1066MHz. B) Graphic card: NVIDIA or AMD (originally ATI until it was bought by AMD). You can SLI your video card, or Crossfire it, which are two different methods of using 2 PCI-E video cards from Nvidia or AMD. Most of us use NVIDIA, though there are some good bang-for-the-buck models from AMD. There are several brands of motherboard makers out there today: ECS, Biostar, ASUS, Gigabyte, and Intel to name a few. They all offer various functions and features, and warranties. Personally, I like Gigabyte bc of their warranties, and they've been more reliable for me than ASUS been (I've used 2 different Gigabyte boards without a single failure, whereas Asus 1 and only did die on me). Other things to make sure about: Make sure the mobo you select supports DDR2, and even DDR3 speeds for RAM. Currently, the standard is now DDR2 800MHz RAM, but more and more of us are using DDR2 1066MHz RAM for that extra OOMPH! Just remember the two things you decided upon earlier, and your choice of MOBOs are cut in half. 2) CPU: Now, whichever socket the motherboard you bought supports, is the kind of CPU you need to buy. You bought a quad-core Intel chip for $300, but skimped on the motherboard and bought it for only $20. Oh no! The mobo isn't the type of socket you needed; it's an old P4 model, not the model that can support that quad chip of yours. LGA775 is the standard socket for Intel Core2Duo chips, currently. AMD's is Socket AM2. Intel has gone from a 90, even a 65nm chip (the size of the chip) down to a 45nm chip. These new chips need less power and gives off less heat, but they do SO MUCH MORE processsing power, that whatever power and heating was saved is gone as you abuse and use that chip for everything in gaming. The sweet spot today for Intel chips, in my opinion, is the E6750, a 2.66GHz, core2duo chip, dual core and above, including the new 8000 series from Intel (the 8200 would be the 45nm equivalent of the 65nm 6750). AMD Im out on the loop of, but there a number of great price-performance ratio CPUs on the market today. 3) Power Supply. There's one rule of thumb here with a PSU: You get what you buy! There is absolutely NO POINT in buying the best PC parts in the world if your PSU is a POS. If a PC requires more power than given by a PSU, not only will it NOT run, but it may also fry and take your expensive $200 motherboard and $300 video card with it. There are several reliable manufacturers on the market, and RELIABILITY is the biggest pricing concern with PSUs. Targan, PC Power and Cooling, those two are the creme of the crop in PSU manufacturers. However, to get that nice 850 watt PSU from PC-PC, you;'re gonna fork over $180. A tad bit pricey. There are some budget PSUs on the market with good reliability, so they're cheaper than others (just not as good). Depending on the build, a decent gaming rig will want AT LEAST 550 watts of power, and you need to make sure it has the cables you need to power everything correctly. I hit a roadblock when my PSU didnt have the necessary power (500 watt PSU) to power everything in my PC when I upgraded from a 6600GT 128MB video card to a 8800 GTS 320MB vid card. Ending up getting a "patch," a dedicated GPU PSU, which has the necessary cable attachments to plug and power it. Beats spending another 80 bucks over the "patch's" price. 4 RAM. One of the easiest, and hardest choices, to make. Simple because you really only need to, or should, buy is DDR2 800MHz. It's hardest because first off, you gotta deal with ALL of the different RAM makers out there; GEIL, Patriot, OCZ, Corsair.. the list goes on and on. AND on top of that, there are MULTIPLE models for each RAM standard; Geil has like a dozen different models that fits under the DDR2 800MHz classification. AND on top of that too, do you want to stick with 800MHz or maybe cut a few bucks, and go only with DDR2 533 or 667MHz, or maybe spend a few more for that DDR2 1GHz RAM? 5) Video card: Only two manufacturers for these babies; AMD and Nvidia. AND though they have multiple models, most of them are based off the PCI-E socket, and don't overlap each other in performance or price... usually. However, these two are Direct Competitors, so when one offers $150 over-performing video card, the other will certainly try to match, or beat, it. Or maybe give you slightly reduced power at a bigger reduce price. Personally, I recommend NVIDIA as they have the best performing video cards on the market. This is an easy hardware part to review for because you really gotta worry about two things only: PRICE, and performance. And to do that, well price is easy, just look online and see the prices. Performance? Anandtech.com, tomshardware.com, etc etc. Such sites give you video card performance comparisons. So you can see for yourself how good they are. 6) Case. There a variety of cases, but lets stick to the simplest three: HTPC Case, Mid-tower, and Full tower. HTPC are usually short in height, with long lengths and widths. Almost like a TIVO box, so to speak. Mid-tower and Full tower cases are what you are more familiar with. These are the cases that are rectangular with narrow widths, but moderate to big height and lengths. And obviously, a full tower is just bigger than a mid-tower. There are over 20 different case manufacturers listed on newegg.com, but there are certain brands that are better than the rest: Apevia, Antec, Thermaltake, Lian-Li. These manufacturers have built reliable, and performing, cases for a gamer, and though their prices can be high, its bc of the reliablility and brand rep that manufacturer has. The biggest concern with a case is: how big are the parts are you buying, and how do you want to cool them. If you're getting a dual-slot video card, sound card, full size motherboard (yes, there are smaller motherboards), several optical and hard drives... you will need a full tower just to cram all that stuff in. But if you got a single slot video card, one HDD, 1 or 2 optical drives, etc. etc. You may only need a mid-tower. Anyways, I prefer full towers as they have better cooling, and just the extra room I can use for future upgrades. They are HEAVY to carry around, but its good exercise. That's the biggest tradeoff between the two: weight (and price too). Additionaly, I look for a case with at least one 120mm fan. Now, the cooling concept is NOT how many fans you got, but how much airflow you can get. 2x120mm fans have better airflow than 3, even 4x80mm fans. Not to mention that they give off a lot less noise; it takes less rpm for a 120mm fan to generate the amount of airflow a 80mm fan does at full speed. Other features in a case to look for: hinge doors with locks, location of the USB, and sound ports in the front, and case windows. This is where personal style really does take effect as people normally only see the case; getting a case with a window, however, will let them see inside it and add a few cathode lights, it looks AWESOME! 7) The hard drives, optical/floppy drives, and sound cards are easy parts in comparison to the first six to understand. Hard drive is like your brain; it stores ALL the information you got. There are several kinds of HDDs on the market; only two to worry about today, really, maybe three, are IDE, SATA, and SSDs. IDE and SATA drives are called that based of the connection they use; either an IDE or SATA connection. Recommendation: Stick with the SATA drives as SATA connections are faster than IDEs (and easier to install!). SSD means Solid-State Drives. This is a new hard drive developed and produced on the market today based off of the RAM/Flash storage concepts. Regular hard drives has several, moving parts in it, reducing their reliability, and thus the reason why system errors can develop over time; the hard drive is just slowly dying out. A SSD, on the other hand, has NO moving parts and is pretty much RAM technology, configured as a hard drive. Only problem is that these babies are EXPENSIVE, and not that big. A 750GB Sata HDD can cost about $120, whereas a 30GB SSD can cost about $300. See the problem? The biggest saving grace about SSD is their speed, having 4x the read/write speeds of a regular HDD at times. Testing has shown that where it may take several seconds for Windows to load on a regular hard drive, you can't time a SSD's loading time as Windows just pops up immediately. It's THAT FAST. Anyways, Look for AT LEAST a 250GB SATA hard drive, 7200rpm (not 5400). Faster RPM means faster speed, but reduced reliability as well, and more power being consumed. 7200RPM is today's standard, and 250GB will work for most people's needs. HOWEVER, if you save a lot of data, look for more storage if you can, and don't forget, you can put several hard drives into the same PC. Only one HDD needs to have an OS installed on it, while the rest are just storage drives for it. I got 2x320GB hard drives, and 1x750GB hard drive. Only one of my 320GB drives has Windows on it, the rest are filled up with movies, music, and games. (Ask Elwoodini how much storage you have, it's insane!) You know what optical drives are: A CD-ROM, CD-RW, DVD-ROM, DVD-/+RW, or Blu-Ray. Simplest answer: Just buy a DVD-/+RW drive, or two, unless you want to play HD movies on

Mine looked brand spanking new. Very fast, the battery does last only 1 1/2 hours, but I got an extra battery for $65 on eBay used and it works nicely. Came with Vista, but I put WinXP on mine and found all the drivers on the internet. The construction is very sturdy hard plastic, none of the cheap flimsy stuff. Overall the value is great, it feels and looks more durable than laptops of the past, and is fast. Great buy. REVIEW BY: Rick M. Reviewed Aug 07, 2008 I bought this laptop a week ago.and received it Wednesday. Excellent condition, I would have thougt I just picked it up at a store. My only problem was when I allowed Norton Internet Security to load (60 day trial)and then brought up the internet, half way through loading, the system locked up. The only way to free it up was to manualy power down. I unistalled Norton and installed AVG Free. NO more problems !!!! This is a very fast easy to use laptop with all the bells and whistles. Also very fast shipping,3 days. VERY HAPPY REVIEW BY: fraqtured Reviewed Aug 06, 2008 i bought the T1625 which is essentially the same specs as this, and wanted to input the impression i drew from the t1625. first off, great price, amazing features, and with a laptop cooler running $40 dollars for a middle of the road model, this laptop will run cool [the only complaint i have found on these was the heat] and you will have picked yourself up a top with features running in some cases nearly twice as much in price of a non refurbs, which will only be the refurbs of tomorrow. run all the updates through gateway, and do a clean reinstall and pertition reformat when you unpack, it, it will take a little bit of time, but will point you in a much faster direction. this laptop is highly recomended in my opinion. REVIEW BY: Reviewed Aug 05, 2008 This is my first purchase from TD.com, and I'm very satisfied with it. The Turion 64 dualcore processor and the 2GB of RAM make short work of everything I throw at it; I have Pidgin (my IM client), Firefox (with 3 tabs open, including YouTube), LimeWire, and uTorrent all running at the same time and there is absolutely no slowdown whatsoever. My only gripes are that it gets a little bit hot when charging, and the battery only lasts for an hour and a half; I can deal with heat and the battery can be easily upgraded. The only thing you have to worry about with refurbished products is the look, not performance; Mine came with a small scratch in the top of the case, but performs like a champ. If you don't mind some minor cosmetic flaws, I'd definitely recommend this computer to anyone on a budget, especially at this price! Your computer uses memory to run your Operating System, applications, peripherals, and to generate and display graphics on your computer monitor. Video memory is a form of RAM, and is either built into your motherboard; or on a graphics card (video card). Depending on the motherboard's configuration, and that of the video card (if separate or built-in to the motherboard), your computer may have to draw on its own RAM memory to meet its video memory needs. This creates shared memory, where your computer’s RAM will be shared between its own Processor (CPU) and its graphics chip. The result is that some systems will have shared memory, some will not. If you have 2GB (for example) of system memory installed, you may notice that your system reports significantly less memory. This is because your system is using shared memory for your video. What can you do about this? You can actually configure this shared memory through your computer’s BIOS settings. However, this is a setting best left alone, since it is typically optimized for display performance, and making changes may impact display resolutions, and other video capabilities. The simplest solution is usually to either: increase your system memory; or to upgrade the video hardware. By upgrading to a new video card with built-in video memory, then turning off shared memory, you will free your system to use it's maximum potential memory, and provide your system with much more robust video features. Click Here for our Memory Options » Click Here for the latest Video Cards » How Much Memory Do You Really Have? When you look at the specifications for a computer, it will display the installed memory, and typically the maximum memory that can be installed. However, while these are real values, they represent a potential useable memory. The actual useable memory may be different from these values. The reason is simply that a computer may configured to use shared memory, which reduces the amount of RAM that is available to the CPU by using some of it for other purposes, such as for video memory. In some cases, you can control the maximum useable memory through system settings, and by upgrading to a video card that has internal onboard video memory. But always remember, that the amount of memory that your system reports, is not always the amount of actual installed memory. If you find that you need more memory, we suggest expanding your system memory, since this is the most effective performance increase, and the one that is easiest to perform .
