Gateway 600yg2 Laptop 600 series chipset issues?

I have a Gateway 600YG2 Laptop with the following specs: 600 series chipset ATI Mobility Radeon 9000 onboard graphics 2.0g Intel Pentium 4 Processor 1g DDR RAM 40g Maxtor integrated HD When I use the notebook, the application windows, when moved, are choppy. I already know that this can be fixed when downloading the proper drivers, which just finished downloading. But, the computer runs much slower than ever before, and I just reformatted everything, and reinstalled XP w/SP2 (which is what it had before). Can anyone shed some light on why this is running so slowly? Are there some drivers I might need to update?

1. check how many processes u have running, do u have antivirus and/or firewall? they can take up alot of uhh... power (forgot the word)
