  1. neither of them get the alienware! go to alienware.com then answer my question at http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20081201135131AA1kRpH
  2. dell hands down. gateway is just evil, there tech support and customer service SUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!! they use the cheapest parts for their systems. seriously never buy a gateway.
  3. it really depends on your budget and what you want the laptop to have and how powerful. try comparing the specifications of the ones you're looking at and then decide what you want to get
  4. Depends upon what you're using the laptops for... Dell used to be the slam-dunk choice but over the past few years their quality has gone down. And outsourcing their tech support to India has left many customers swearing off them. By the same token, Gateway had a bad reputation for several years but that's improved recently. For general computing, Dell XPS is probably better. For gaming, the Gateway P series wins because their video adapters (Geforce 8800M) are so much better. For gaming computers, the model of video card is of supreme importance, moreso than CPU, RAM, hard disk space etc. And since it cannot be changed on laptops, it's important to get the best one you can. Alienware is just obscenely overpriced.
  5. Buying a laptop is a complicated decision which will probably affect you daily for the next few years. In addition to price and specs, you want to consider things such as ease-of-use, speed, reliability, stylish-design and tech-support. Different people would have different opinions. Therefore, I would recommend you to check ProCompare.com (http://procompare.com/top/notebooks). They have a recommendation engine that ranks laptops and other tech products based on ratings and reviews from a community of trusted IT professionals. They also have a cool personalization slider that lets you personalize the results based on the criteria that are most important to YOU. Hope you'll find this answer useful...
