The Marines.......?

My feince' wants to join the Marines. The recute told us all about the benifits, but they sounded to good to be true. I know that my son and I can live on the base with him as soon as we get married, and I know they give you base pay and money for food and housing but the other stuff im not so sure about. They told me that there a some colleges that will pay for my school or atleast give me a discount. He said that since my feince' will be doing the computer part he would not be consider a part of the infiltry, and when he went over seas they said he would be about 2hrs away from the fight and onley be gone for 3-6 mo. I dont know much about the Marines so I want to know if all this is true??

  1. yepp it's true. my bf is a marine and he signed up to do administration stuff and he doesn't fight, and they pay for college once you're out, etc.etc. it's true.
  2. Marine recruiters are "infamous" for promising the moon and delivering a whole lot less once the recruit has signed the dotted line. I was promised that I would work in motion picture work in and around San Diego after boot camp and ITR training, could go to school, blah, blah, blah. When I finished Boot camp my mos came up 0300 and went on to become 0341 and 0331, went home on leave and promptly went overseas to an exotic country called Vietnam. Had ample opportunity to practice my trade and looking back wouldn't have wanted it any other way. You have children and need to get more information, hard information from wives that are in along with there husbands
  3. Alot of it is to good to be true. Just read the fine print on everypage before he signs. And ask plenty of questions there are alot of payments you pay out of pocket which they tell you that you get for free.
  4. Actually USMC recruiters dont lie that much. The USMC doesn't really have personnel issues, or recruiting problems, so the recruiters dont really need to lie. The horror stories you hear about with people about recruiters usually involve the Vietnam war, or a US Army recruiter. The Marines CAN guaranty an MOS based on ASVAB score, so if he is doing some kind of non combat job and its in writing then he will get that MOS. What I dont really understand is why someone would join the Marines and TRY to get a non-combat job, why not just join the Army instead? Anyway...you will most likely be able to get base housing depending on were he gets stationed, and if he does deploy that depends on his unit deployment schedule. Its not like he will finish MOS school and go straight to Iraq or something, thats just not really how it works in the USMC. If you are a military dependant there are some colleges that will give you discounted tuition, or you may be eligible or programs that offer tuition reimbursement.
  5. Marine recruiters will try and set your b/f up with an enlistment contract that he likes. While those benefits he told you are true, they don't come easy. First of all, base housing is hard to get, it depends on how many openings, his rank and time in grade. The lower the rank, the smaller the housing units. Next, all Marines are trained to be infantry first, the job they are trained for comes second. Many Marines can tell you that they thought they had it made, but when it came time to ship off to the fight, they were often sent to wherever they were needed the most, ones MOS didn't matter. I know, been there done that.
  6. There are some good bennifits to being in the military, but the recruiter will paint an inaccurate picture. #1 rule as a marine" Every Marine is a rifleman first" My brother was in communications and was told how far he would be from the action. Well he was carrying a field telephone with a marine recon unit when they were ambushed in Tikrit and was ambushed on the dessert as well. They did well and made mince meat out of those insurgents, but not before losing a couple of guys. I am patriotic and I believe in serving, but I also believe in honesty, and if your in the military any branch you could find yourself in a hot zone. I was in the Air Force in a maintenance squadron yet some of our guys during the first gulf war watched scud missles fall from the sky. My point being that recruiters can't tell you for sure whether your fiance' will be near the action or right in the middle of it and if the recruiter makes that promoise he is a liar. Curt
