How to convert RealPlayer files into something that Windows Media recognizes?

I'm using a notebook computer that has Vista. The kids told me that realplayer made it easy to downloade youtube videos, and it does, but then you can't make dvd's with the free part of realplayer. I have several programs that say they can make DVDs including Windows DVD maker, NTI CD and DVD-maker and Acer Arcade Delux, but they don't even recognize that the RealPlayer files are video files. Is there any way to convert the files so that the other program recognize they are videos, or do I need to re-download all of them, in a different program? But that's why I got realplayer in the first place...@#^$%#!!##!
