Computer Hardware?
Where can I look for information on putting together parts from old computers, identifying them, and adding the best parts to make a new (old) system?

- I have been doing what you say for years. You pretty much need to identify each component individually..each processor, each motherboard, each modem, etc. You can spend hours and hours looking online for compatibility issues, or, do as many people do, just put em together, boot em, see what works, and fix what doesn't. Hardware is not rocket science..anyone with a screw driver, and enough sense to know how to avoid Static Discharge can put a computer together. Software, however, is much more complex and requires much more knowledge.
- Loyal gave a good answer! I do the same thing, while working on other people's computer's also. I check the motherboard out, try to find it's code,(for example, Ga-7DX 4.0, this is a Gigabyte mobo, the manufacturer's code was between the cpu, and the ram slots. This mobo was one of.........50? 60? Can't remember anymore!) I've 'tinkered' with everything from a 25MHz Intel, Slot 1,Slot A, Pentium Pro Dual, to Pentium4 3.2 GHZ, in the old stuff. Mobo's from Chaintech, PCchips, MSI, Biostar, Gigabyte, Trigem, Asus, Intel, and on. Here are some site's I've found helpful, (you can email me thru Yahoo Answers if you have questions.) 1.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_CPU_sockets#List_of_sockets_with_Intel_CPUs 2.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Intel_microprocessors 3.http://www.weirdstuff.com/ 4.http://users.erols.com/chare/sockets.htm 5.http://www.kva.kursk.ru/bios1/numbers.shtml 6.http://www.motherboards.org/articles/guides/910_1.html 7.http://www.motherboards.org/ 8.http://www.motherboards.org/mobot/manuals/ 9.http://www.motherboards.org/mobot/motherboards/ 10.http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/page/drivers_motherboard 11.http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/ 12.http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article.php?cat=&id=59 13.http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/65 14.http://www.ctechinfo.org/ 15.http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/page/drivers_chipsets 16.http://www.computerhope.com/jargon/f/fccid.htm 17.http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/236 18.http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php 19.http://www.directron.com/fsbguide.html 20.http://www.motherboard.cz/driver/
