Question About Computer Power Supply?

So last night, I think my computer's power supply "exploded". It made this loud noise (sort of like a BANG) after/during shut down. My power supply model is: King Star KC-250 ATX. My question is, does anyone know if my entire power supply is busted or just a part of it. If the whole thing is busted, then 1) Is it worth replacing? (I believe it's a very old model, beacuse that computer is pretty old) - is it expensive compared to a new computer? or 2) Might as well buy a new computer My 2nd question is, I have some important stuff still on my harddrive, but obviously I can't really make a backup of it now coz I can't even turn on that computer. If I do buy a new computer, can I add an aditional harddrive to it (the one from my now busted computer) so I can keep all my files?

  1. Hi, You are asking for problems with only a 250 Watt PS, get a new one but this time go for a 450 Watt one (about £25). as for the second HD (your old drive Yes) I would replace the PS in the first computer and you may have got away with it ???
  2. You need to buy a new power supply and get one thats atleast 350 watts more the better. If you buy a new pc just connect old hard drive to new 1 and copy over files you want to new hard drive then reformat old 1 and use that old one for a backup drive . or just for more space.
  3. You should say goodbye to your power supply. Try to get hold of the Ghost image software and also a IDE to USB cable. plug your old Hard drive from the IDE to USB cable then put the Ghost image software to the CD drive then boot it will reconize your old hard drive and can transfer your data to your new hard drive.
  4. A new ATX power supply can be purchased pretty inexpensively. Newegg has a couple right now that are free after rebate: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817163033&ATT=33-180-030&CMP=AFC-C8Junction They are also pretty easy to replace - disconnect all the drives, and the connection to the motherboard, unscrew 4 or 5 screws, and remove the old one. Put the new one in, replace screws, and replace connectors. Should take 5 minutes or so tops. If that is really the only problem. If you get a new computer, you should be able to remove the hard drive from your old one, and install it as a secondary (or D:) drive on the new computer. Then all of your files would be accessible.
  5. Since you HAD a 250W PS, your c. is rather too old. So: If you buy a new PS, perhaps you find out on turning on that the motherboard and / or the harddisk is out of order. Then you spent money for nothing. The best you can do is finding a PS just to test your system. a) If c. does not start (no action at all) remove your harddisk and test at another computer. If OK, then buy a new c. use your old HDD as second and copy the files to the new. b) if everything OK with test PS, its up to you to decide whether you buy a new PS or whole c. NOTE: PSs are NOT all the same.
