- Put in a new modem
- sounds you have to format your computer~
- Your built-in modem's driver must be damaged, or maybe it's registry settings. Click the 'System' icon in Control Panel, then click the 'Hardware' tab. Is your modem listed? Is the driver enabled? If not, uninstall, then re-install the driver. Laptops usually just come with that idiotic 'recovery disc,' so you'll probably have to go to the laptop's web site to look for the driver. They might have an updated one too. If you think you may have deleted the wrong registry entries, you can always use System Restore to restore them. I think it's under the Programs|Accessories|System Tools menu, when you press the 'Start' button. One incredibly annoying thing about Windows is that if you uninstall a driver, Windows will restore it on the next reboot. You have to delete the .inf file for the driver in the \Windows\inf folder. The inf folder is normally hidden.
- The 'phone jack' inside your computer is actually called the 'modem'. The reason why the Ethernet plug is working, is because the Ethernet cable plugs into a separate device called a 'network card'. The difference being is that one dials up like a phone and the other just automatically creates a constant connection. Because they are separate it means that one may fail to work while the other continues to run perfectly. There is no manual thing that you could do to fix the modem directly if it is no longer functioning. The only thing you could do is replace it. The cost depend on how fast you want it to run. Before you do this, however, please check the settings on the modem. Go to the control panel, select 'modems'. Make sure that it shows that your modem is installed. I see that you have been trying to remove some programs from your computer and have been having difficulties with this. Because you have been doing this, checking to make sure that the modem is still installed is a good idea before you replace it. It is possible that somehow you have accidental removed the drivers from your computer. If this has happened, then you should reinstall all of the drivers for the hardware (modem). If this does not correct your problem (don't forget to restart after you reset everything), then you probably need to replace the modem. You may be able to do this yourself as it is a notebook computer. If you push in on the modem, where the phone line plugs in, you may be able to pop the modem out, and then just slide a new one in and then install the drivers for it. If it is completely internal then you will probably need to get a professional to check it out.
- If you are using XP do the following: "Start" "Control Panel" "Printers and other hardware" in left column "System" "Hardware" tab "Device Manager" Expand "Modems" Right click on device and choose "Uninstall" Reboot PC and windows will now find and install new hardware all should be well.
- reinstall the modem drivers if that doesnt work test by opening hyperterminal and dialing any number a local cell number if no uninstall modem from device manager and reboot then install drivers, not working open system remove modem and reseat in same slot dont forget to unplug your system if that doesnt work either get a new modem or get broadband service like dsl or cable good luck
- I'm not sure which version of Windows you have, but it sounds like you might have some serious problems and you might have to use your restore CD to put your Windows OS back to like it was when it new, which means everything that's on there now will be gone. However, before we go to doing something like that let's take a look at your issues. Most people should never any need to go into their registry, because you can do more damage to your system than you ever deamed possible. If you really want to be able to get into your registy, then you may have to restory your OS or you can try to obtain the utility from your CAB files (consult the Microsoft Knowledgebase for details). To check your modem go to the Control Panel > Printers and Other Hardware (assuming you have Windows XP) > System (it's on the left hand side of the screen) > Hardware > Device Manager > Modems. Your modem should be listed and you should NOT see any yellow warning triangle by it. If you do, there is definately a problem and you can probably fix it by downloading an updated driver from the website for your computer's manufacture. If everything looks ok, right-click on it and check the properties to make sure there are no conflicts. You might want to check with your computer's manufacture's website support area to see if there are any updates for your bios or modem and that have to do with Windows XP, version SP 2 if you have downloaded and installed it. As to your problem with not being able to uninstall software, it all depends on what it is that you are trying to uninstall. I recently found out that you can't uninstall Palm software if you have already uninstalled the Palm Desktop, so I had to reinstall my Palm Desktop software so that I could uninstall my other Palm software first. Anyway, if your software isn't dependant on anything else and it just won't uninstall, then you could try and boot in safe mode using F8 on startup and then try to remove it. If that doesn't work, then depending on how your other issues worked out you may or may not want to consider restoring your hard drive back to factory spec. If you decide to do that make sure you back (copy) all your data to disk(s) first, because if you do it right everything will be gone when you are done. I hope the information I have given you here is useful and good luck.
