random windows XP scan..?

i have a compaq presario notebook and i was using aim and my computer froze and so i restarted it using the power button..it then started up again and said a scan is strongly needed to check files and it was on a blue screen and it ran in 3 parts and something came up about corrupted and orphaned files and i let it run thinking that it would make the computer run faster..apparently not the case..now it turs on and says "we apologize for the nconvience, but windows did not start sucessfully. a recent hardware or software change mght have caused this." and i can choose to start t in safe mood, or last known good configuration or start windows normally..ive tried all of them. nothng works and it justkeeps restartng..please help me fix my computer!!! I cant get past this screen though...it wont let me log on

1. Well, Ive Had This, Tryed Everything, Nothing Works, Its Your Hard Drive If It Was Anyhting Like Mine. Take It To Your Nearest Computer Store And Get It Fixed.
2. possible defective hard drive...try to repair the OS first or if not possible, reinstall OS (take note: if you reinstall, it will need to reformat your hard drive), if same problem occur, replace hard drive and reinstall OS..
