DIM Laptop LCD - tried everything!!?

I'm trying to work on a Compaq M200 (M2310ea) the LCD screen is VERY dim when the laptop starts up, and never brightens (even with FN F8) the laptop works perfectly when hooked up to a monitor (i checked all the display settings for monitor and notebook lcd, so it's not something in there, as far as I can see) I bought a new LCD screen, that didn't improve anything. I bought a new inverter, again, no improvement. I uninstalled and reinstalled the graphics drivers... no improvement. I uninstalled and reinstalled the quick keys, to see if f8 worked, no improvement.. I'm just about at my wits end here, as the parts here are VERY expensive... does anyone here have any suggestions that I might be able to try?

1. I just bought a laptop ... on mine, you know the arrows keys ? Well on mine the up and down arrow keys can make the screen brighter or darker. Yo have to press the FN and the arrow keys (either up or down) at the same time ... have you tried that ?
