- plz say how about the network you are in .......like is it a domain or work group.......what operating system you are using....
- hi, when you post these questions you must be very detailed with the problem or you could get a thousand answers that are not applicable to you - the full (exact) error message would be useful - what exactly you are doing to get this error msg, plus the os of the host machine and machine you are connecting with, plus any other salient points such as whether you are on a domain or workgroup (peer to peer) setup. Assuming you are using a home situation where the print server is a windows box. From start bar, click on start, settings, printers. The window that appears should show all the connected printers. It should have a little blue hand under the printer to indicate that it is shared, and Ready under the status column. I wont go further as you say this bit is set up correctly. Next you want to connect to this printer from other workstation on your LAN. Now lets go to the other workstation. The easiest way to connect to the print server on win nt/2000/xp (not sure on win me/9x) is from the start bar, click on start, run. In the dialog box that appears type: \\<ip of printer>\<share name> replace the <ip of printer> with ip of the print server (if you dont know the ip of either pc from the dos box type ipconfig) replace <share name> with the share name of the printer for eg if my print server had an ip of 192.168.0.10 and the share name was hp_psc_1300 I would type: \\192.168.0.10\hp_psc_1300 you should get a prompt asking you if you want to add the printer and click on yes/ok. (If your not on a domain, or not using win nt/2000/xp then you will get a prompt for the printer drivers - either select it from the list that appears or click on the have disk button if you have the drivers on your hard drive or on a cd.)Thats it, done! The other way to add the printer is from the start bar click on start, settings, printers. The printer window should appear showing you all the printers set up on the pc. From the menu bar of this window, select File , Add printer. This brings up the Add printer wizard. click on next, (at this point the wizard is slightly different for each os you are running but basically asks the same sorts of questions, xp is described here), choose network printer, choose connect to this printer and type the printer server ip and share name (as I described earlier for the easy option) click next, leave as default (unless you wish otherwise), you may get a driver dialog (this identifies the printer) choose the make on the right and the model on the left hand side. If its not listed click on have disk and browse to where you saved the driver locally (or point to the cd - you have got the drivers for printer right?!) When you click on finish the printer should be set up. Troubleshooting: Make sure your LAN setup is working properly. If your on a workgroup (peer to peer which i think you might be - as setting a domain requires nt4/win2000/2003 server etc and it doesnt sound like you do), both the print server and the other worksation should be in the same Workgroup - right click My Computer, Propertiers , then click on the Computer Name tab. The workgroup name is in here, you can call the workgroup whatever you want but make sure to spell it the same on all the pcs you want to be in this workgroup, you have to do this on every pc in the workgroup. Make sure you can ping each other, from the print server open a dos box (start bar, click on start, run. In the dialog box type cmd then press okay/enter)type ping <ip of other workstation>, eg if ip fo the workstatiob is 192.168.0.11 type ping 192.168.0.11 if you get 'reply from 192.168.0.11 bytes=32 time.....' then the print server can physically get to the worktation,. From the workstation do the same but see if you can ping the print server. If you are unable to ping both ways, then the network settings arent correct. (if you dont know the ip of either pc from the dos box type ipconfig) Assuming you can ping okay both ways, In 'My network Places' select view entire network, click on Microsoft Windows Network', you should see your workgroup listed, if you double click it you should see both your print server and other worstation in here (and any other pc in the workgroup as long as they are switched on). dont worry too much if you cant see all the pcs here, as long as you can see the workgroup. Because you are in a peer to peer network you will need to add the same user and password on all the machines. So whatever you log in with on your workstation, the same user and password *has* to be added to the print server. On the print server make sure the user has permissions to the printer (in the printers window right click on the priter, select properties and go to the security tab). You may also find that the share wont show up unless you add the NETBUI protocol in your netowrk settings for your network card (i could only get win 98 and older machines to work in workgroups and sharing until i added the NETBUI protocol - you dont need to confiure netbui just add it in the NIC settings ) you can use hostname (pc name) of the workstations in the above scenarios if either NETBUI is added or you have each others ips addresses in the repsective local hosts file- i wont go into this now as this answer is long enough without confusing you more!) :-) unfortunately I cant be any more specific unless the question includes more detailed info. . .
