How do I check microphone settings on my gateway laptop?

I tried to sign up for skype when i got to the voice recording part it did not play my voice back skype told me something was wrong with my microphone settings. How do I check my microphone settings on a gateway laptop? I can get voice mail messages on my laptop but when I call my friend on his p.c I can never hear him. But he can leave me voice mail messages thats on yahoo i.m not skype. Thanks

1. Control Panel - Sounds - make sure the volume is not turned all the way down or muted on the microphone.
