- If you are using a cable modem you actually are on a local area network with the modem and that modem is what is connected to the internet (it being the gateway).
- It's a router and it usually connects more than one computer to a high speed Internet connection.
- A gateway also allows mulitple wireless connections as well, if the gateway allows it. It is not a mandatory part for your PC to operate correctly. It would be a peripheral, which is an optional device, just like your modem. Believe it or not, you are actually on a network. You are on your cable service providers network because you go online through them. Your modem is connected to a gateway at the cable provider's site. You are part of a WAN (Wide Area Network).
