  1. check the cat 5 cable closely then look in control panel / system / hardware /device manager for any errors (red X or Yellow ! marks) in the Ethernet section
  2. Make sure that the Ethernet connection is not disable or drivers are missing or the cable is loose. To find out if is disable go to Control Panel/Network Connections/ and look for an icon that says Ethernet connection. If the icon is in a gray color is disable to enable it right click on the icon and select enable. If you don't find any network adapter on that screen that means driver are not installed. Right click on My Computer select Properties on the upper tabs select hardware, when you on the hardware screen select Device Manager. A new screen will pop-up with allot of names with crosses next to them. Once you on that screen look for a yellow question mark right click on it and it will tell you what it is. If it says Ethernet adapter, you're missing the driver. To get the driver visit the HP website and go to the support page enter your laptop model and it will take you to your laptop setting. When you on your laptop page look for Download Drivers and download the Ethernet driver for the operating system you have. Save the file on a Jumpdrive or disk then install it on your laptop. If not of that work try switching the Ethernet cable into another port of the router, also try changing the cable. If is an old laptop and you did a fresh install of winXP I'll bet 100% is the drivers good luck.
  3. The HPs have an issue with the motherboards regarding wireless. Contact HP and have then ship you a box and they will exchange the Motherboard under the warranty enhancement program.
