How do I link my XBOX 360 successfully to my Gateway laptop?

I hook up the ethernet wire from the xbox 360 to my laptop. But when i check for a connection on the xbox it says, "If you are using a router or gateway, verify that it is configured to assign IP addresses to your network devices (DHCP enabled). It also says on my laptop "Limited or no connectivity" So what's wrong? What do I need to do?

1. you can hook up a xbox to a computer with the vga cable attachment, its like 30 bucks at best buy
