How do I hook up my Gateway laptop to my HDTV?

I have a Gateway laptop manufactured in 07, 3GB Ram, just really awesome laptop, i'm trying to figure out how to hook it up to my hdtv.....i have the cord that i beleive is the VGA cord.....and i hooked it up to the tv, tried to match the resolution on my laptop with the ones supported by the tv and nothing happened. any insight?

1. You normally have to either extend your monitor or their are buttons (usually Fn-F7) to switch montor modes. Currently, the default will be you laptop screen. If you right click on the desktop and select Properties (actually, this is XP, not sure what Vista does), Settings and there you'll see options to extend your laptop. Alternatively, Fn (Function Button) & F7 usually toggles between monitors (if not look for a double monitor button on one of the Function-keys).
2. yeah you have to match the resolution of the tv not the laptop so you have to go and change the relolution on the laptop to the same as the tv.
