What kind of hard drive would be best for installing into a Gateway 400 series laptop?

My gateway laptop is a few years old and the hard drive went to crap. I want to put a new one in and give it to my little brother. So I'm wondering what would be the best kind of hard drive to put in (in terms of rpm, etc).

1. 40 GB if you want to spend more money you can go to 120GB Price is range $50 for the 40GB and $10 per every 20GB after look on ebay for a used one for cheaper price It has to be ATA 5400 RPM
