Slider next to touchpad on Gateway laptop not working?

the slider that allows me to scroll up and down a page is not working. i think this is because i recently restored it to factory settings. i have a gateway laptop. please help.

1. hav u tried cliking on the scroll button and doin it?
2. start- run msconfig, go to stratup tab, see if synaptics or syntchpenh, somehting like that
3. You are correct, it is likely a Synaptics pad, you could try a driver for it from Gateway or a generic driver for it from Synaptics, I doubt Gateway had any options "they" added so the generic driver from the pad maker will probably be fine http://www.synaptics.com/support/drive.cfm
