I need to find out how to check memory ( hard drive and General ) on a Dell computer?

The computer is Dell Dimension 4700 with windows XP. The computer actually belongs to my daughter who lives in another state ( West Virginia ) . She is planning to install a large CAD program . She needs to find out how much capacity there is in the hard drive ( Gigabytes ) in drive C and drive D and used capacity and free capacity in both drives. She also needs to find out the same for her general memory ( Megarams ) .- GB. I have tried calling Dell.parts and accessories. They say they need the : TAG NUMBER" found on the tower. Surely there must be a much easier and faster way to go drect to the computer and get this information. Appreciate a thorough answer.

If you go to your desktop, and right click on the "my computer" icon, and click on properties at the bottom. it will open a window, and at the bottom of that screen there is a place where it says how much memory the machine has (RAM). Then, close that window, and double click on the "my computer" icon. right click on the drive that you want to see the info for, and click on the properties option at the bottom. You will then see all the information about the drive you require. Repeat this step for the second drive... Have fun
  2. To check the capacity as well as the used/free space on her HD's all she needs to do is RIGHT click on START, click EXPLORE, then RIGHT click on the HD she wants and click on PROPERTIES. It will show her all the gory details about the drive. As for the RAM, RIGHT click on MY COMPUTER on the desktop, click PROPERTIES, it will tell her what CPU she has, as well as how much RAM.

  5. Ram capacity (memory): click start button, control panel, system. General tab will display CPU and Ram capacity. Then in same window go to hardware tab and click on device manager. Look at hard drives. Right click and choose properties. You will see a pie graph of used and unused space.
  6. Click START Click PROGRAMS Click ACCESSORIES Click SYSTEM TOOLS Click SYSTEM INFORMATION Main screen shows general information and what you are looking for. Other areas just click the + sign and additional info will show. As in if you click COMPONENTS and then click on STORAGE, you'll see the hard drives and info. Sarge

It will inventory everything both hardware and software. Have her copy and paste the results into an e-mail to you which will look similar to this below (I removed some personal info). Also tell her to print it out. Then just review the results she mailed you.
