What is your opinion of Gateway computers?
I'm looking to get a new PC for my house but don't want to spend too much. Just need something basic and simple. I know someone with "gently used" Gateway E 1600 computers. What's your experience with Gateway in general? How long do they last? Is tech support okay? Any help or opinions would be appreciated!

- I've had 2 Gateways. Their tech support is awsome from my experience. The computers are solid too, although it sounds like you're getting an old one. A 1600 is not very powerful.
- i had like 20 of them and they r very good with tech support and all other work and they r realible 2
- Computers are a lot like cars: some people prefer Chevies while others drive Fords. Same with computers. All the internal parts are manufactured in Taiwan these days, in one of a handful of factories. What makes the difference is how the individual companies have them configured. Gateways tend to have a lot of excessive programs running in the background, as do most computers these days. You can resolve this by going to Start/Run and typing in MSCONFIG, check off the box to start up manually and then unchecking all programs you don't want starting in the STARTUP tab. (this doesn't delete the program) If your friend has had good luck with the "gently used" machine and you trust their judgment then you should be OK with a Gateway. In my ever so humble opinion...if anyone tries to tell you that one computer is better than another, they're talking out of their butts. Its the tweaking that makes them different.
