How can I override a password on a Gateway computer?

I just purchased a gateway computer for cheap at a garage sale and everything seems to be working fine, however there is a password needed to log onto the system, is there anything I can do to override or reset this password to create a new one?

2. is it a start up password or win xp login password??? if start up: open computer, locate batter on motherboard, remove batter and set jumper to clear_CMOS, return battery after 30seconds, and return jumper to normal if win xp: boot computer and tap f8 unitl a screen comes up, select "safe mode" and press enter, now select the admin account, then go to: start, run, type: cmd, now in cmd type the following things: net users find the user you want to use and then type: net users usernameyouwanttouse * (with the star) then you will type a pass for the user twice, if this does not come up check the spelling of the user name and the placement of the star, now close cmd and restart the comp
