Gateway Parts

Can you help me connect my Gateway Solo 5300 laptop to my DSL Internet connection?

I've had a Dell Inspiron connected to the Internet DSL style, with a Westell modem, and via a USB cable. I'd hoped--but not really expected--that it would be as simple as connecting the USB cable to my Gateway Solo's USB port and I'd be online. Huh-uh. Doesn't work. No flashing on the modem to detect any Internet connection. But Windows XP DID say "new modem, Westell, detected." It then says it can't find the software for it, and asks if I want to download it (via the Internet....There's a certain irony there when Windows asks if I want to download the software for a modem) So now I'm back online with the Dell Inspiron. What are the steps I need to take to get online with the Gateway? Do I need to download the driver with this computer, copy it to CD then install on my computer? And even after that, is there more to it than that...other steps I have to take?

  1. yep, that's the way to go if you haven't another possibility to copy the software from the Dell to the Gateway laptop. after you have copied the software e.g. on a CD, do the same as before and connect the Gateway laptop via USB cable again to the modem. when asked for installing the software, insert the CD, navigate to it and click "Next" or "Ok". follow the instructions on screen.
  2. well,do you have a LAN port on your gateway built-in/via the pcmcia slot? if you do, you can just connect to the internet with the LAN wire instead. If you connect that way but you still want to use the usb, then now you can download it. oh. Does your modem have a LAN port you can connect your LAN wire to?if your modem doesnt, then do what you were going to do: download the driver and put it on a cd and then put it on ur gateway solo. good luck! =D
