Is my Gateway notebook badly damaged?

I heard a crackling sound in my charger. It turns out one part of my charger is so bent, the rubber is cut off and you can see the metal wiring all bent. Obviously I am not using the computer anymore. Do you think this only damaged my charger or my computer? P.S Lately, my computer has been turning off by itself, and sometimes it does not turn on.

1. I'd definitely not use that charger. It may not have hurt the laptop. When it turns off, or will not start, may be caused by the charger not having charged the laptop at all, so you're running on a depleted battery. Find another good charger of the same type (or some third party models at the office/computer stores may be compatible) and see how it acts.
2. Invest in a new charger. It will probably get your laptop working again.
