How do I get DivX or XviD files to play properly on my Gateway Solo 1200 laptop?

The sound plays but the video is really choppy and slow. Specs: 800 MHz Celeron, 312 MB RAM, 8MB Video memory, 10GB HDD, I'm using VLC media player for now... as it was recommended as the best... any suggestions as to how I could make it work on these specs?

1. Download and install the K-Lite Codec Pack. It has codec's to play everything from flv's to divx and xvid. Download it here: http://www.free-codecs.com/K_lite_codec_pack_download.htm
