- Please don't purchase a Dell. I had one of their laptops that broke after a few months. I called their technical support because the laptop won't turn on. The battery isn't even charging. They asked me questions like, "Did you plug it in?" and "Did you press the power button?" WTF!?!? I've also worked with those small desktops that they have. They're crap too. The way everything is crammed in there and the lack of ventilation will eventually kill it. People brag about Dell having a good warranty. Yeah, you're going to need it too. Buy an HP instead. I have two HP desktops and 3 HP laptops at the house. Never had a single problem with any of them. Compaq is the same as HP. *To the guy that responded below me, you're right. After dropping my Thinkpad and my HP notebook numerous times nobody ever came to repair it or replace it. Why? Because they didn't break! Dell has the reputation of having great warranty because I don't know a single person who hasn't had a need to use it including you. I can't honestly say how good HP or IBM's warranties are compared to Dell's because I haven't had a need to use them. My 9 year old Thinkpad is still up and running and not once did I ever need repairs done on it. Same goes for my 7 year old HP laptop and desktop. Even the very first computer I ever built back in 2002 never had problems and is still running now. But every Dell I've owned broke a few months after buying them. So, I say again, do not buy a Dell.
- The previous person that had answer must have no technical background what so ever. Dell DOES have the best warranty out there. If you look around a little their are many statics showing that. Also Dell has now created something called Dell Idea Storm. It is where the general public can go and recommend things for Dell to work on. Some want cheaper laptops. Some want all American support. Dell has actually already made a few changes due to the program. It has only been around for about 2 weeks. I personally have owned a few Dells, one of which I am on now which is the Dell XPS M1710. It is a laptop and I have the complete care warranty for it. I have dropped it twice, both times that have made and sent to me a brand new Dell M1710 within 7 days. Any minor hardware problems (which you will have with EVERY manufacturer) they sent a tech out to replace the parts for me and it generally happened within 48 hours. Dell is where you will get the best bang for your buck.
- plyush - forgive me, i really don't have a good answer for you, and neither do any of the other answerers so far, as we're all judging the company as a whole, not the service in India. Dell is well known for its customer support, but generally speaking they tend to cater more to beginner users than advanced users, as ih8u pointed out from his experience with their so-called tech support. As far as the machines themselves, well, my experiences with both Dell and HP/Compaq have been pretty good, but I haven't had need for tech support. Both have decent warranties covering parts and labor, standard for one year, and you can upgrade. As for HP vs. Compaq, Compaq is owned by HP and is usually cheaper (both in price and components used). ih8u - I can't say as I've had any problems with Dell (except the fact that they use Broadcom NICs), but then, I run Linux :-P
- The technical support for dell is really good. There are a multitude of forums on line where not only can you speak with their tech representative but you're connects to hundreds of thousands of dell user's worldwide who can help you troubleshoot. The parts are readily available aftermarket, just check out ebay.com, you can find anything from replacement motherboards to monitors, dvd-drives anything you want. (and at a cost less than buying it from dell) Although i do support their tech support my favorite laptop manufacturer is HP/Compaq right now. (they are the same company) Their tech support cannot rival Dell's yet but... their computers are far superior. they have completely refurbished their entire product line in the past year. HP and compaq listened to users and starting incorporating "comfort" features into their pc's. They've improved the looks. They include media card readers, remote for media play, webcam, and many other late great additions. This is good in case you plan to use the notebook for personal usage outside of work.
- ih8u, i hate you too. coz dell has the best customer support. And i've had my dell for 5 years and it never broke or anything. Dell computers rarley need any support. And dell is rated as having the best customer support
