I can't find my "Gateway Restore" disk and my repairman says he needs it to redo my computer.?
My Gateway laptop bit the dust and the computer expert says I need to uninstall everything so he can "restore" my original computer and reinstall all my programs. We've moved a few times recently. I have my Gateway Drivers CD and most of my software programs, but I cannot find the Gateway Restore disk. Also, the expert told me part of the problem is having something like Yahoo Messenger on my computer (I never use it.) or downloading music. (I've never used anything like itunes.) What can I do??? Thanks for any advice!

- A. You need to call Gateway about a replacement disk. B. I wouldn't trust any "expert" that thinks that just having Yahoo Messenger or music on your computer can crash it.
- The "expert" sounds like a n00b. I'd consider someone else. The only way downloading music and using IM can substantially damage your computer is from embedded viruses. I imagine you can order a replacement disk from the Gateway Support site.
- First contact Gateway and order another one, they will probably want the computer serial number and stuff to send you the right one. Toshiba charged me $20 I think. What to do while waiting for it? Well if you can, you can download a free program that I have had great luck with fixing my computer programs, it's called Advanced Windows Care. A bit of real good news though. Does your computer start up and go to Windows? If it does, Windows has a System Restore Program built in that took snap shots of your computer's good working configuration. How to get to it? Click on Start, then choose Help. Help will open, you will see a menu that has Pick A Task. Third item down is System Restore. Just follow the wizard, it will show you a calendar of previous dates it took the snap shots, pick a early date when you didn't have laptop problems, and just keep going. Best of luck.
- "bit the dust" doesn't help us computer experts at all. Maybe we know more then the gateway "expert", so post your exact probably with the error messages and all, any weird sounds, etc...
- the only way to get the right drivers you need to call gateway with the model number of the computer and thay will sell you a new recovery cd
