Gateway Parts

i got two questions for you.?

first question. i have a gateway solo 5350 laptop with about 248 mb ram. recently after inalling a display adapter from the gateway website on my computer the laptops display stops responding anywhere from a few seconds to 1 or 2 minutes. it is just the laptop's display. when i hook it up to an external crt monitor it works fine. i did a system restore to about a week ago but that didn't help. what is wrong with my monitor. i can't afford a new laptop because i am only a teenager. please answer. second question. part a. i can't install linux ubuntu 8.10 on my laptop. i try but it doesn't install and my monitor screetches. yes, it screetches. i can't use my laptop monitor because of the problem above me. i tried in safe mode but my monitor still screeched. i was able to run the live cd though. kinda slow but it still worked. part b. where can i get full instructions and all the downloads needed to run minivmac on my computer with windows xp. not os x, just mac os 1 or os 2. just something to play with. i know the mac website releases mac os 7 for free but i don't have a mac. the end. please answer as many as possible. ok, in the first question i forgot to mention that the display gets weird when i delays. not exactly pixely but not good. kinda like static. yep, i reinstalled the display adapter but it is the one that came with the computer. i got it from a gateway website. my monitor does not screech when i am running windows xp. also...how do i manually install programs in ubuntu 8.10 without internet? i can't figure it out. also, i wan't this to be the first question you answer. how do i get dial up on ubuntu 8.10. i need it to intall software. i have a modem build into the desktop computer. please tell me how. and i can't download anything because i don't have internet.

  1. don't have a clue
  2. My question is if your old display adapter still works? I would guess that the display adapter you got from the website is either the wrong one, faulty or you don't have the correct drivers set up. I would reinstall the old (hopefully) working adapter and confirm that you have the correct new one and the correct drivers downloaded for it. Then if this is in fact all correct and up to date, reinstall it and then call the vendor's number and talk to technical support. If they can't help you and it is broken, most computer parts have a standard 3 month to one year warranty. The linux ubuntu deal has to wait until you can get your laptop working correctly. The screeching leads me to definitely believe there is something wrong with the adapter. The minivmac I'm not sure about. If I find something I'll post it.
