What steps can you take to avoid damaging internal computer parts with static electricity?
Some people say anti-static bracelets are not needed, some say that you should wear an anti-static bracelet and rubber soled shoes while handling computer parts - so what is the correct way? I am looking for tips specifically concerning laptops. Thanks again, Gizzo I am installing additional RAM.

- I have been repairing for over eight years and have never worn an anti static bracelet with never a problem. Of course it may depend on the soles of your shoes and the floor surface you are working on
- When you use an anti-static bracelet, you eliminate the risk. When other people say "anti-static bracelets are not needed", they are not talking about eliminating the risk. They are encouraging you to TAKE A CHANCE. So now you have to ask yourself, "Do I want to take bad advice?" Good luck
- Try not to work on it when standing on a nylon carpet, wood flooring is ideal. Wear rubber soled shoes, and try to earth the Laptop, by connecting a piece of wire to the metal inside then connect to a water pipe or central heating pipe (bare metal). It may not be needed but best to be safe.
- my partner builds, repairs and upgrades pcs and laptops for a living he has his own shop just make sure you have rubber soles on all the rest of the stuff they tell you is basically crap you wont damage anything so dont worry
- an old timer said that if you leave it plugged in the ground will protect it against anything but it also leave the problem of power. most writs bands are useless. just run a ground from the screw of a power outlet to the chassis if you're paranoid, most of the time there's no problems.
- Many of the previous members have included the wrist straps grounding & rubber soled shoes and stay off the carpet and these are all good practices however there are many other factors to take into consideration.First after unplugging PSU it is a good practice to first press and hold the power button for thirty seconds to release the static discharge from your BIOS. Second it is also good idea to remove the CMOS battery. Then ultimately whether or not you would cause internal damage to your computer without taking the initial steps referred above about wrist straps and grounding will depend upon your experience in working inside the tower, what parts you would be handling, for instance if you are simply plugging in a hard drive cable or other simple tasks such as removing CD / DVD player from the peripheral bay you would most likely be okay. But if you are intending on handling your CPU or RAM sticks or any other part of the motherboard you would be more likely to cause static damage without being grounded. webmaster@freestuff2do.com
- Even something as simple as this might work. Touch the computer with one hand and with the other touch the ground(preferably wood). Hold for a few seconds and then your ready to go!
- You do not need a wristband but i recommend you use one for the sake of a few pounds why take a risk.just dont go shuffling your feet on the carpet and touch your case to remove any static that is all i do and have never had a problem so far
