How do I apply the thermal paste that I bought when installing my new computer parts?

I am building my own computer, and since my CPU didn't come with a fan, I bought my own and some thermal paste. Do I apply a small amount to the bottom of the Fan, the CPU, or what? How much do I apply and do I need to spread it around evenly? I am building it today, because all the parts came last night, so I am wondering if someone could please help me.

1. placing the paste on the bottom of the fan will be best and prevent the paste from oozing onto your motherboard if you place too much on your CPU.
2. You need to apply just enough to give a thin, even covering. It'll even out when you clip the fan in place, but it's good to get it fairly close before you do that.
