how to make my gateway/vista laptop run faster?
I bought a cheap little gateway laptop, but since its like 2 months old it came with vista like all new laptops do and i really wish i had xp (as i think everyone will agree with me) and i heard you can't just remove vista and install xp cuz then the laptop acts faulty. The laptop only came with 512 ram so my question is: is there a way i can make this thing run faster until i upgrade the ram? Like sometimes to start it up it takes 10minutes which should NEVER be the case. I stopped alot of the startup programs that weren't necessary.

- You need to disable not only startup items, but also services. Do not use "msconfig" to disable services, type "services.msc" in the Run box instead! Black Viper has an excellent configuration guide which I recommend. 512MB RAM is not enough for Vista (it's very resource hungry). You may also want to clean your registry. CCleaner, available at http://www.ccleaner.com is free and worth running. It will also remove unused files from your system - allowing Windows to run faster and freeing up valuable hard disk space.
- The ONLY fix is more RAM. Use the free SCAN TOOL at Crucial.com http://www.jdoqocy.com/click-2594269-5032657 You really should get the MOST RAM that the computer can take. YES, if it will take 4GB of RAM in just two slots BUY THAT. But many low-end laptops will only take 2GB, and that will be an improvement. Good luck and Happy Computing!
- RAM is the big deal
- Reconsider put xp on it, I did the same thing with the laptop I am currently working on. I had no problems apart from having to download a few driver's from the vendor's website. I just works faster. BTW I read that the new service pack will make xp run even faster. And it's kind a cool to show of the 'made for vista' sticker and the show you run plain old xp lol
- As one person mentioned, BlackViper.com offers a lot of good advice for users who want to improve the performance of their computers. In you case specifically, that are a few things you can do. 1) Defrag your harddrive. Even if the computer tells you it doesn't need to, do it anyway. Especially with a new computer, after you've had it a month or 2, you will have added new programs and removed others. Defragging ensures that your programs and files will be accessed in the most efficient way possible. 2) Disable services you don't need. This was mentioned before and BlackViper tells you the ones you can disable/make manual safely. Also, there are a lot of start up programs that you most definitely do not need. Keep it to a minimum. I just have my graphics controller and Antivirus program. 3) Add more ram...but make sure you are not adding the lower speeds. Add the PC5300 or PC6400 & 667mhz or 800mhz if you can...those offer better performance than the lower speeds. 4) Install the Vista Service Pack when it comes out in '08 (i believe). This speeds up your operating system and is supposed to fix some bugs as well.
- Using a registry cleaner can clean up your computer and then make your computer faster,Why?the reason is that there may be some regsitry errors and remnant, corrupt files and temp files in your computer to cause "computer slow". Everytime you install and uninstall software on your computer and surfing online you create junk in the computer registry.over time, the registry can grow to enormous proportions, especially if the various programs you've installed do not do a good job of deleting and/or updating it's Registry entries. You need to scan and clean your computer with registry cleaner to make it fast.Good Regisry Cleaner will improve your computer and Internet performance dramatically! It even can speed up your computer by 300% or more! There are some comparison and review of TOP 5 registry cleaners. http://www.speeduppc.info/ You can download and scan your computer for free.
