What is a good, but cheap laptop for a student that is going to college in the fall?
I am going to college in the fall and I would really like to get a new laptop before I go. I have had my Gateway laptop for a couple of years, but I think it is time to invest in something new. Any suggestions as to what to buy? Please don't suggest anything TOO expensive, as I wanted to get something affordable that won't cost me an arm and a leg. I don't need an ipod. I am looking for a computer. I already own an ipod touch and I am not really that into macs.

- try an acer
- I dont know what you can afford. My HP Pavilion Entertainment PC costs $750 at Best Buy. I got it (and a printer, mouse, Targus bag, mp3 player, virus protection) as a bundle in the Thanksgiving sale for $600. I love it. Best Buy has the best employee discounts, so if you know someone working there it will save you lots of money as well. I wish I'd known that a few months ago :-)
- yeah id go with an acer my mom has one and it runs pretty good and i think dell is having some specials as well
- Get a Toshiba. I swear I've owned all kinds of computers over the years and the Toshibas just don't die. Mine never has any problems and it's fast, and it looks good. Do not buy an HP or a Dell, because I know several people who have had them and despised them. People think that random freezing up, shutting down, overheating, breaking motherboards, and other bizarre problems are normal, and they're NOT. Take it from me, I have had this thing for over three years and I've NEVER had anything weird happen with it. It comes on, and it operates correctly, every single time I use it.
- Macbook. If you were to buy a Macbook/Macbook Air/Macbook Pro/iMac, you will get a free iPod nano or iPod touch. But it's only valid till September.
- anything made in china is low priced but i don't know about the quality yet. there are generic (not branded) computers that is reasonably priced but they do not give you warranty. try looking for asus brand.
- I currently work in computer sales and as far as brands go I would stick with an HP or Toshiba. Do not get an acer they are not built very well and they seem to have the highest rate of return or failure. I would seriously not consider it. As far as it goes you can get a descent laptop for college these days around $600 or $700. Retail stores such as Best Buy will definitely have the best deals because if you compare their prices versus the manufacturer you can save about $200.
