Why do people have a problem with Gateway computers?

I'm going to be getting a laptop sometime next week. I went into Best Buy, described what I wanted in a laptop to the sales associate and told him my budget. He pointed me in the direction of the Gateway laptop Model: M-6864 and it sounds like everything I want in a laptop for a very cheap price. It's going for $606.99 right now. I called my mom and told her about it. She knows nothing about computers, but was continuously telling me "You don't want a Gateway!" Our first desktop was a Gateway and it went to hell [mainly because of my own stupidity] but I am MUCH more knowledgeable and have been through many computers since them. I've heard alot of complaints about Gateway's laptops and computers, but what's the big deal about them? Why would people prefer HP or Dell over Gateway? The Gateway laptop I saw was a bang for it's buck and I can't believe anyone would pass up such great specs for a great price.

1. i own a gateway.... i think theyre fine... nothing has happened yet to my pc for past year... those dudes at best buy wouldnt know anything about a computer even if one hit them in their face... they dont know shit...i cant stand them... one time i asked the kid about a stereo and the kid didnt even know what i was talking about... GO ON YOUR INSTINCT! GATEWAY YOU GET THE BEST BUY FOR YOUR MONEY!

Gateway had many problems in the past everyone that I know bought one had it in service more than they did using it, and it uses proprietary hardware which makes it impossible to buy parts from another source. The same with Dell.
