Gateway Laptop keeps freezing - what are my options?
I have a gateway tablet pc that is 1 year old and it keeps freezing. Not like a memory dump, but just completely freezes in the middle of any program or even if it is just sitting there. The IT people here at UD think that my motherboard is bad. I would like to know my options - first of all, is it my motherboard for sure? Also, they said that a repair of this type would cost around $700 if I send it back to gateway. Are there any cheaper options, such as finding a motherboard on my own and paying someone to install it? Thanks I guess I should also say that about 6 months ago I spilled a coke on it. I haven't had any problems until about a month ago but the IT people think that this is probably the cause.

- I would agree with your IT people - remember that coke dissolves concrete so it will not have done your laptop much good. Without taking the laptop apart, it's difficultt to say how much damage might have been done, and to what parts. You may find it better and cheaper to buy a new laptop rather than repair this one, as over time you might find it has more problems.......
- Coke dissolves concrete but yet people drink it, I do not know where people get this from. If you spilled a coke on it than there is residue from the coke everywhere including on the keyboard and the motherboard as well. So, what you can do is look on the bottom of the laptop and find the screws for the keyboard so that you can look inside laptop and at the keyboard it self. There should be a keyboard picture next to the corresponding screw. Actually repairing a motherboard can be expensive but the part will cost at least $200-$300 dollars for a new motherboard but the labor depends where you get it done, normally about the same price as the part . Also, you need to check where your heat sink is for any clogs from the inside of your computer when you open it or whoever opens it. If the computer starts up fine but when it gets into windows and after a few minutes it freezes than it is most likely just overheating which could be just a clog or your fan could be bad from lack of air flow. look at the link for estimates on parts. Good luck.
