Which HP part might be delaying the production on my customized laptop?
I ordered a laptop on 9/25 and the HP site shows that it will be in production for more than 2 weeks (18 days). Has anyone else seen this big of a delay and which part might be the cause? HP Pavilion dv5z customizable Notebook PC * Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1 (32-bit) * AMD Athlon(TM) X2 Dual-Core Processor for Notebook PCs QL-60 (1.9GHz) * 15.4" diagonal WXGA High-Definition HP BrightView Widescreen Display (1280 x 800) * FREE Upgrade to 2GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm) from 1GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)!! * ATI Radeon(TM) HD 3200 Graphics * FREE Upgrade to 250GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection * Webcam Only * HP Color Matching Keyboard * Wireless-N Card with Bluetooth * No Modem * SuperMulti 8X DVD+/-R/RW with Double Layer Support * No TV Tuner w/remote control * 6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery I am someone who does not order custom computers for personal use often. I posted this question after researching the amount of days the HP generally spends in producing computers. I have found that it takes about 10 days to do this. I would assume the extra 8 days are based on part availability and would like to know based on others experience which parts generally create delays in production. What I do not need is answers about how patient I am. I am aware that I am excited about my new shiny laptop.

- That's actually fairly normal for a customized laptop.
- The modem.
- 18 days for a custom build laptop...Geez! Get over yourself and learn some patience. You are not the only HP user in the entire world. I swear, we have been spoiled by instant gratification, to the point of turning consumers into @$$holes!
- Lots of manufacturers custom build every laptop, even if you take the defaults. So this doesn't seem like a big delay... it's usually 10 business days.
- Probably memory. Availability fluctuates constantly. We see this all the time at work when ordering. Most people think that companies like Dell and HP have a warehouse stocked full of PC parts waiting for it to be put together for you. that maybe true in a certain sense, but PC makers are subject to the same delays in production as anyone else. It could be the ram they go initially was all bad and they are waiting for a resend. Could be the comany that supplies ram had a run of bad PCB...maybe the PCB maker had a run of bad material to make the PCB...see my point? When you deal with a company, you are dealing with lots of other companies as well...
- it was my hard drive took 3 wks
- No one part, they are merely awaiting enough orders to make a production run. Just because the end computer is custom, it doesn't mean they have enough orders to complete the part that is not custom. Cases, boards, cables ect. All large companies use standard parameters to determine when to do certain parts of their production. With the current mess going on it would not surprise me to see custom orders take even longer if for no other reason then waiting for gas prices to stabilize so they can save on frieght in/out.
