Computer will not turn on, Maybe Power Supply?

So I upgraded my pc, and with the leftover parts, I decided to create a backup pc to use. The problem is, as I was turning on the newly built backup computer, the power light came on, but nothing else came online. And soon I noticed the power supply smoking. My conclusion of the problem is that my power supply is shot. (yes, the smoke, the power supply fans not turning..) Now, my question is, could other components have caused the problem? And since the power supply did not function properly, is it possible that my motherboard is now shot? I'm considering buying another power supply to see

  1. If your power supply went up in smoke, I can just about guarantee you that the other components are fried as well. Yes, your power supply is dead all right, but now, its a matter of whether or not the rest of the computer is shot as well.
  2. Other components could have caused the disaster or reasons for failure could be external to your pc eg: brown-out, power spike. In my experience further component failure is a hit-and-miss subject. Try a new supply first. If no luck strip what you can off from the mobo and if it starts then add one component at-a-time until it won't start. When that happens, if it happens, you have found your bad component.
  3. don't buy another power supply because you waisting your money
  4. I would buy a new Power Supply. Unplug everything but the Motherboard, next plug in the CPU.fan next the Memory ca- rds, next the Hard-drive, next the Monitor, next the keyboard and mouse, next the CD drive, next other cards like sound, NIC. etc. After each step unplug the power cord from the Pow.Sup. and everything should be alright. I think no other components where damaged .Just replace the PSU.
