Gateway Parts

What is the recommended power supply for an upgraded computer? ?

I am upgrading my Sony VGC-RB42G with new parts. I am putting a dual core processor(3.16 GHz), ASUS P5Q Pro LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX Intel Motherboard, OCZ Platinum 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066, and a ARCTIC COOLING Freezer 7 Pro 92mm CPU Cooler. I was wondering how strong the power supply should be, like 500W.?

  1. 500W should cover it.
  2. Thats hard to calculate without looking over the power consumption of these devices but anytime I build a system for myself, I dont scrimp on the power supply. Never know when your gonna add something. Stick with the 500.
  3. top end ones are running around 1300w. PC Builder's recommends and 850 for the computer that they are building. it has a little better components though. http://www.gamesradar.com/f/the-2008-pc-builders-bible/a-20080918153014865039/p-26 500 is on the lower end but might be able to do it as long as you don't have to many add-ons later.
  4. You left out the video card. If it is a high end card it can take quite a bit of power. 600 would be comfortably higher if you plan hard core gaming.
  5. Just glancing over the specs you're describing, 500w should be fine, but make sure it's 500 continuous, not peak. A lot of power supplies will advertise their peak, not continuous wattage. I'm just wondering with all the parts you're replacing, why not just go with a whole new computer?
  6. I have a DELL B110(250-watts)I make DV-files on that machine..I have a Intel D915GAGL Mobo(P4)1-GB of RAM and 500-watts..then a Vista Machine w/DQ965gf and 2-GBs of RAM at 600-watts..for my Video Editing and DVD Burning..500-watts is perfect..the 600-watt machine never even gets warm..the PSU case actually is cool to the touch.
