Gateway Parts

How do I fix a Gateway type computer that crashed?

I have a gateway computer and it crashed all of a sudden. When I turn it on, it goes to black screen and says press R to repair. I press R and it just goes back to the black screen. I cannot use my repair CD's because the tray won't open. Do I have to buy a new computer or what?

  1. When you turn it on it goes straight to the Press R to repair screen? Never heard of it, try Google. See if you can go into Setup (your BIOS) and change your boot order to 1. CD 2. w/e 3. w/e the point is make the CD number one so it will boot from the CD u can open the CD try by sticking a paper clip (unfolded, or anything else small and long) into the small hole on your CD drive, look closely for it, its on the front. If all else fails, buy a new hard-drive, that's where the problem lies the rest of your computer is fine
  2. Sounds like a hard drive crash. If you can, try a safe mode start up. To do that, you keep tapping "F8" when you start your computer. Then there sould be a screen that says Start Windows Normally, Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Command Promt, Safe Mode with Networking. Start it with Safe Mode. Then click on Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools (or somthing close)>System Restore. And move it back about a week before yor crashes started to happen. Not sure if that will work though,
