HP Notebook HDD crash (10pts for solid answer)?
Okay so I've had my notebook (dx6650us) for about 1 1/2 years. 8 months ago the primary hard drive crashed so I called HP tech support after I had ran the diagnostic test to confirm it. They promptly sent me a new HDD and recovery CD and told me I could replace it myself. The HDD they sent me was the wrong one however and after calling them they told me I needed to mail the entire thing back because the correct part was no loner available. A week or so later I got it back and everything was back to normal. Moving ahead 6 months I have encountered the same problem. Except this time the warranty is expired. They told me that it was going to cost me $300 dollars to fix or they would sell me a P.O.S Compaq for $450. Of course I wouldn't want to buy a new laptop because mine is pretty freakin' new. I figured they would understand that it was a reoccurring problem and either fix it again or offer me a better solution then this. The notebook was $700 new and I have a hard time believing $300 of that was one flippin' HDD. Has anyone else encountered this issue? What would cause this to keep happening? What options do I have? Can I buy a HDD myself and use the recovery CD to reinstall windows? I found the exact same one on Amazon for $50: http://www.amazon.com/Toshiba-MK1237GSX-internal-SATA-300-buffer/dp/B000RVFPD4/ref=wl_it_dp?ie=UTF8&coliid=I23ECJR30EWOJJ&colid=2VSDKXLHLKSP9

- if you can buy a compatible drive at a less price somewhere else, then go for it. anyway, what was the reason the drive crashed?
- Had the same problem with HP but on the video card. They replace it three times, for $400.00, and told me they would cover it if it happened again within a year. Next time I will buy Apple. Find a local repair shop and see what they can do at a lower price.
- Buy the hard drive off Amazon and use the recovery cd to get your laptop back up and running. HP is charging you the 300 for parts and labor. That's a ripoff if I ever seen one. I hope this helped.
- do you know what caused the hdd to fail? Is it still being detected by the computer? check it on bios. if hdd is being detected by computer you can try reformatting it again. but if no go then unit is for repair. You can buy a cheaper hard drive that has the same specification then run the recovery discs. even if the hdd has a different brand that will still work. Since you are the one who replaced the old hdd then it will not be a problem installing another one. For the issue with the warranty, we cannot blame them if they cannot accommodate you for another repair because they are following their company policy. Next time you buy a computer buy an extended warranty. also buy the extended warranty that covers accidental damage.
