Where can I find junk computer parts to build a gaming rig?

I here about people making the today's equivalent of $3,000 home made gaming monsters out of thrown out junk computer parts for a 1/4 of the price even less were do they get the junk parts that are that powerful for such a small price is the quality any good and do they overclock them.

  1. They aren't "junk" parts but it is cheaper to put them together yourself. Choose parts on newegg.com and tigerdirect.com
  2. Id like yo see you make a DICENT gameing comp from a 95 dell.
  3. thrown out junk parts are not the best path to take for building a gaming rig.
  4. I really doubt ya can find a "junk" computer that has been trown away with any good gaming parts in them..might scrap a motherboard and mabye some ram and power supply..nothing really gonna be gamer quality though
  5. It depends. Firstly, you wont be using "Junk" parts... unless you get them from eBay, but that's not a good idea as you can only guess how reliable the part will be. The example you quoted is a stretch. If you shop around for parts, you can usually (not quite always, though) save a couple hundred dollars. You'd only save ridiculous amounts of money building a computer if the alternative was vastly overpriced. To be fair, a lot of "Gaming computers" are ridiculously overpriced. The real advantage in building your own computer is knowing what you're getting, and ensuring that you get high-quality parts. www.newegg.com is excellent for this. However, unless you know a lot about computers, you'll do more harm than good. Don't get one of these overblown GAMING COMPUTERS. It's pointless...my $1,200 laptop can run any game on the market, easily...and an equivalent desktop would be far cheaper. When looking at a gaming computer, be very wary and make sure that what you're getting justifies the price. Just look at the specs. Check the processor, RAM, and video card...and maybe the sound card/speakers too.
  6. Don't get junk parts for a 3,000$ computer. Go to newegg.com and get yourself some recertified, open box, or new products. I built my compy from all new parts from newegg :) Good Luck and Best of Wishes --Odameyer
