Is it possible for me to replace the graphics card in my hp dv2000 notebook without having to send it in?
I've had a diagnostic test done at Staples, and they say my graphics card is bad, but they want 400$ to send it off for repair. I have priced the graphics card and it is under 100$. Staples says the card is part of the motherboard and can only be replaced by the manufacturer. Is this true?

- yes they are right. most likely the graphics card you found is a desktop version, which is much cheaper. the graphics card you have is most likely an integrated card, meaning it is part of the motherboard itself. your only options are 1) send it in for repair 2) spend the $400 on a new laptop
- Integrated graphics cards are impossible to replace without replacing the motherboard, in my experience. They're soldered on to the motherboard. In some cases, though, you can add a new video card. If your laptop has a free PCI slot, you can probably put a new video card in the free slot. I looked it up, and the chances are that your lap top does not have this free slot, but check anyway. I don't know if you'd have to send if off to the manufacturer, necessarily. There might be local computer stores that can do the work for you for less cost, but you'd have to shop around. One way or the other, you're probably going to have to end up switching out your motherboard if you need a new graphics card.
