Gateway laptops screen goes blank.?

i have a Gateway M-Series laptop... && for some reason when i close the screen the screen goes black and i have to restart my computer... does anyone know how to fix this? my computer doesn't turn off, it just goes blank... :( like the computers still running.

1. it seems to be your power settings. Go to control panel > power options > advanced tab. There you can set what happens when you close the lid etc. Yours is probably set to shut down when the lid is closed.
2. hmm, all ican think of is to mess with your power settings so it doesnt turn screen off when you close it or some thing like that. other wise you might have to bring it in somewhere to get it fixed. but just try messing and or looking at all the power settings in control panel
3. okay i do not fully understand the question but here is what i think is going on. when you close the lid/screen the laptop powers down. if that is the case while it is weird cause it means that you are someone changed it from the default. go to power options by clicking the battery icon in the lower right corner then go to more power options then on the right side of this new window that should appear. click to choose what happens when the lid is closed. this will bring up to options on for on battery and one for when plugged in. click on the drop down bar and choose. sleep or do nothing. sleep will put your computer in a low power state and do nothing will cause computer to do nothing and run as if it was up. good luck hope this helps. edit oh yeah try this go press the function key or fn and then the monitor key which looks really weird may be a box inside a box or a box inside two lines. try this a few times it may be going into external monitor mode or something.
