why are Gateway laptops cheap?

when i saw their laptop specs, they sounds pretty fine and i saw the price and it was really cheap compare to other same specs laptops.

1. Because they're unreliable - My mother had a Gateway laptop, after a year or so the motherboard broke and it wouldn't start up no matter what. Also, the're usually very light and plasticky - much like Sagem mobile phones. I think Gateway is a budget brand or something, but I'd steer clear as there have been many problems with their PCs.
2. A long time ago, Gateway computers were good until the Dells, the HPs, the Acers etc. came out which have better quality took over the market. In order to compete with them and keep alive, Gateway pulled down their prices. I don't know how many people still buy Gateway. Maybe you could do a survey on answers.yahoo.com in the polling section. Take note: You will rarely hear people recommending Gateway computers.
