New Gateway Laptop's Screen goes blank after use?

I have a new Gateway laptop that I bought about a month ago from Best Buy. It has had this issue of the screen going blank while in use. Sometimes it is like 5 minutes or so before it will do it, and sometimes I will be an hour or two into something and it does it. I have to power the computer completely off to fix it but it happens again and again and again. I uninstalled the ATI graphics driver and downloaded the updated driver from ATI's website for this computer and that seemed to fix it for a couple days but now it's doing the same thing again. I don't have any crazy software on it that would cause this - it is currently running Vista, but I should be receiving my copy of Windows 7 since this is a new computer soon. I am wondering if maybe that will resolve the issue? It seemed to happen only after I installed all the Windows updates when I first got the computer - not straight out of the box. I've reviewed all the Windows updates and I didn't see one that would cause this kind of a problem. I do not think it's the actual hardware of the computer, as my friend has the exact computer and bought it around the same time that I did and his is doing the exact same thing! Does anyone have any suggestions? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  1. Contact both Gateway and Best Buy have your friend go with you for both computers. IF there is a problem with both you should document it incase you need to get a free replacement.
