Gateway Parts

I'm a full time college student and was wondering If I could claim a notebook I bought on my taxes? Thanks.?

Okay, The first part of 2009, I was a full time student(spring) and then the second part(fall) I had only 3 classes and not 4 because everything was full. But for one of my classes, I purchased a notebook computer and microsoft word 2009 for it since I had a Mircosoft class. Can I claim the laptop and/or software on my taxes? Thanks.

  1. No, sorry, that is neither deductible nor can it be used for the education credits. If you use the proceeds from a 529 plan to fund your education you can use that money to purchase a personal computer and Internet access in addition to the usual permitted expenditures and still keep the gains tax free but that's the only way to buy the computer using tax free funds.
  2. ABSOLUTELY!!!!!! However, my experience is with a private tax guy. I don't go to places like HR Block or Jackson Hewitt. Last year my income went up dramatically. I was going to owe taxes. My tax guy asked me if anyone was going to school. My daughter was going full time and I was taking classes less than half time. I ran home and got every receipt from everything that I spent for school. I got credit for it. About $600. Good luck. I would ask specifically about education credit.
